Journalists are a shame to their trade anyhow and just write what you tell them to write. celebrities last fifteen minutes or about as long as they keep their 'virginity'.The fat-walleted studio execs need some work-out and connection with REAL jerk off get jerked off PEOPLE too.

I say let the director, editor and effects teams keep their movie for their own instead of ripping their throats out with scheduling pre-screenings just for changing a sucking ending, or a main sucky movie. Riksarkivet (National Archives of Sweden) is by law required to obtain, store and display for the public all documents and other entities produced by governmental agencies in Sweden, as well as committees and such since 1618 (some older, as well) for all future time. As the latest 30 years or so has seen a large surge in computerized documents/-ation this gives quite a few spectacular and very interesting examples of deliveries from agencies present or extinct with odd hardware requirements and zillions of different software solutions originally used, many homegrown.

Not only is the archive responsible for 'old' data, its is also responsible for migrating non-computerized material onto a computerized from for future public display, which is no easy process since there is a goal of course not to lock the information onto media, hardware or software designs that are extremely short-term.
In short, it's an area of a heck of a many problems, lots of questions, few people and little interest from the field (I mean, how interesting can it be to design excel spreadsheets for bank applications? Really?)

As for Vogon International, I'm sure that it's a company full of geniuses, but I would prefer if they answered the calls we make for ordering and requesting features promised in the manual in their software, which we need ASAP! 21. Europe and tech on The United States Losing "The Tech Edge?" · · Score: 1
IMO the advantage that Europe has in certain techs isn't as big even though it exists. Most importantly: it is based on very few commercial actors [companies].Take for example mobile phones. We have Nokia on one side of the baltic sea and Ericsson on the other. Both companies are so large that they more or less totally dominate the country in which they flourish. If they go down in market cap and profits it will affect so many companies and so much money and people that the technology evolvement for the endusers will be severely slowed down in these local areas, unless the governments take action.

Much of the non-US tech advantage comes from the absolutely ridiculous power-games American companies play. All the IPOcraze, patent frenzy and sue-your-ass mentality should atleast in some ways make room for other players.. like European or Japanese companies. When technology is allowed to develop more freely the results also get there faster now don't they?

    Some other points to make:
There's a lot of money coming into the system in Europe now from former government run retirement funds. A lot of that money is put in emerging markets. But it can also be removed as fast as it got in.

There is an extensive advertising campaign being run by the Swedish Department of Commerce which is apparently working quite well in getting media attention to Sweden and in general to Scandinavian/European companies, technology, media, art and design.
So don't believe everything you read on the issue.

The ongoing deregulation of the European telecommunications market

The EU is finally getting its behind out of the wagon in certain areas and taking some decisions good for high-tech, but the forth-coming expansion into eastern Europe might stall the whole process.

WAP is becoming more and more of vapourware..

University areas are still a basis for solid growth in high-tech, and in this the US still leads.

Not many new high-tech wizbang companies besides telco's and phone manufacturers are showing profit, or any tendency of ever getting one.

Japan will IMO most likely be the one who makes the best out of it in the end. It's good though that America, and the US especially is getting aware atleast that there exists a world outside its geographical borders, in tech too....

IMO the world would be just fine if the shutdown was geographical. But shutdown all corp-owned nets and there would be severe effects, a lot of cabling is owned by US corps.
And a lot of connectivity in Europe for example is effectively based on US owned networks, albeit being put in Euro soil.
Of course the whole thing would be seized by the various local government entities by the second a shutdown takes place, to guarantee national and intra-national communications, trade and security.

This difference, which in no doubt exists, is - in my opinion - a result of ordinary people's beliefs. Much of the value in todays stock markets are pension funds [or whatever the term is in american, I'm a europerv and speak oogle-boogle usually] .. and most people just want the best growth they can get and dont really think all the line out what the results become: higher income demands on the company, pressure on the workers and sometimes a more reckless environmental handling.
Surely there are some devils in the company world.. but put a little egoistic devil in every stockholder and you get a helluva effect.
its the same thing with this [already worn-out] environmental issue.. most people dont just give a damn when it comes to their own backyard, if there is some need to take extensive action or lesser return for the self.
