“They’re unmanned aircraft,” Arlington police spokeswoman Tiara Richard said. “They aren’t military grade. They’re somewhere in between that and remote-control helicopters that are used recreationally.”
Completely agree, although local newspapers and television stations have been using the word "drones" lately.
All these are is unmanned, radio controlled helicopters pretty much, with cameras. It is basically a cost-cutting measure so that the Arlington Police Department doesn't have to lease time from the Fort Worth Police helicopters. The savings to the city is considerable.
They have been test flying these lately. They look like any hobbiests Radio Controlled helicopters. Except they have cameras. And they can't be used if there isn't a controller operating them.
Well, all you got to do then is move to Canada or the UK. Land in rural Canada is surely pretty cheap, if you get sick, the government will pay for it, although being that far north, not sure how well satelite internet is going to work.
You guys beat me to it. I recently moved across town. Before I moved, I had the choice of two internet providers - $30 for 30 meg or $40 for 6 meg with transfer cap. Hmmm, guess which one I chose.
However, I then moved 30 miles across town. I am in MORE populas and RICHER area than I was before, and I have two choices, $45 a month for 15 meg with a transfer cap, or $45 a month for 20 meg with no transfer cap. Hmmm, which do I choose.
Now, I guess you could always argue that there is also HuguesNet (prices start at $60 a motn for 10 meg), Clear ($50 a month unlimited data with 6 meg caps), MetroPCS ($55 a month for a 4G phone plan with unlimited data, transfer rates 1 meg to 5 meg depending on area and time of day), etc.
Point is, I would KILL for 20 meg for $20. And I live in a major city in the US.
Looks like many other people have said the same thing, but....
Just get up from your desk and stretch evevery half hour for a minute or two
About every two hours, take a brief walk. Walk to the bathroom, walk to the breakroom, walk around the office. Don't think you can justify 5-15 mintues away from your desk? Just say you are going to take your "smoke break" but use it to walk.
Suck it up and go to the gym. I actually found a great program called Fitocracy that also has an Android app. Its basically like a real-life RPG game - as you work out, you level yourself up, there are quests you can go on, etc. Oh, and see if your company will subsidize part of the gym membership - your health should help them keep their insurance costs down, so it is a win for them.
Cut out the Mountain Dew and Monster. If you HAVE to have an energy drink, switch to the Low-Carb drinks. Limit yourself to no more than one a day. I started by making one last throughout the day, and drinking water when I get thirsty and just saving the energy drink for just when the brain really needs the jolt (amazingly, water helps more than the energy drink does - I found out that most of my headaches were coming not from a lack of caffine but from being dehydrated). As I started drinking more and more water, I needed less and less energy drinks, until a Monster lasted me like two days. I then stopped Monster and switched to Coffee. The advantage of coffee is that it is also a great laxitive. I am now down to just one to two cups of coffee a day, and water the rest, and only have Mountain Dew or something once every week or two as a treat. I feel great, and have lost quite a bit of weight.
Change up the diet a bit. I am not saying to go on Atkins or something, just kinda watch what you are putting in your body. MyFitnessPal is a great free website for helping track calories, carbs and fat. I really did not have to cut anything out of my diet, just watch what foods I eat together, and in the same day. Just some common sense stuff - if I grab a Bacon Ultimate Cheeseburger for lunch, it is probably not a good idea to have pizza or fried foods for dinner. Once you learn how your favorite foods and stuff work together, you get to where you need to use the site less and less. I hardly use it anymore - the site helped me learn how to think about what I eat, and now that I kinda have a routine for foods I eat, I rarely need it anymore.
Key thing is, just make a few small changes in your routine. Even if you start going to the gym, you don't need to spend an hour on the treadmeal - work up to stuff. Start with a few things that feel good, lift some weights, spend a bit of time in cardio, but don't kill yourself. Once that starts feeling good, and you can do it without killing yourself, increase the time / reps / sets. Once that starts feeling good, then you can start upping the weight / resistance a little.
Key word is, just start with afew small things, and then work up. Sounds like you are aleady looking at making a change, which is a big starting place. You don't need to do anything dramatic like installing treadmills at your desk or stuff like that, just start with walking around the office a few minutes a day.
I'm just interested if there is any open-source versions of this available. Mainly, I want to remove TV logos and ads from shows I want to save on my PC.
I block at the browser level - er, machine level (in the case of non-web based content). The reason for this is that if you suddenly find that something is being blocked that you need access to, it is much easier to adjust it at the machine level than having to log into a router or proxy and change settings.
Of course, this is for a home network, with no wife or kids.
I also usually use VPN tunnels, so blocking at the router or proxy level would be pointless anyways.
could provide an alternative energy source for the island nation... This is the equivalent of more than a decade of Japan's gas consumption.
So, let's get this straight, the deposit is equivilant to a little over 10 years of Japan's CURRENT gas consumption, and this is being touted as an alternative energy source, especially to combat the loss of energy from loosing two nuclear power plants? Um, okay, not sure how much gas it takes to generate electricity, and not sure how much electricity a gas plant produces compared to a nuclear power plant, but it seems to me that they go through all the trouble to build these plants for only a couple of years worth of energy. This doesn't seem economically viable to me.
Maybe someone can explain it better, or can provide information as to how much gas it takes to power a gas plant, and how much power a gas plant produces compared to a nuclear plant.
I don't think the question should be whether a tweeting teen is focused, but how much their tweeting is distracting others. Even in a performance hall (as opposed to a movie theater) the light from a cell phone or tablett can be extreamly distracting. If I was in a performance hall that allowed tweeting, I would probably look for another performance hall (I just happen to be in an area where there are several I can choose from). Yeah, I may be attached at the hip to my phone, but I know when to turn the thing off!
On top of that, many performances and arrangements are copyrighted (despite the fact that the source material is public domain). AFAIK, any mobil device that can tweet is also a recording device. Any hall I have been in in the past couple of years, if you pull out your phone at all in the hall, either before, after or during the performance, you are first given a warning, then asked to leave, as you could be using it to capture the performance. Now, I guess all I have to say is "I'm tweeting" and I can bootleg an entire performance.
No, I don't like this at all. Have enough respect for other patrons and turn your mobil devices OFF (not just to silent or vibrate) when you go to a theater or performance hall. If you are on call or something that night or that week for your job, don't buy tickets for that night, or get someone to cover for you.
It starts a bad precidence. Soon, people will be tweeting in broadway shows, then in movies. We need to stop this, not encourage it!
Completely agree - I like in the summer, it not getting dark until 8 or 9 and your sun isn't coming up at 4AM, and in then in the winter setting the clocks back so that the sun comes up at about 6-7 instead of around 8. Daylight Savings Time does exactly what it says - saves LIGHT for the DAY.
Most of us have computers, phones, and atomic (ahem really radio) clocks that update themselves - all I have to do is update the old alarm clock and the clock in my car.
Most modern calendar systems (such as Exchange) take timezones and Daylight Savings Time into effect, even across areas that observe DST at different times or across areas that don't observe DST.
So seriously, what is the worst that happens? You loose an hour of sleep? Go to bed earleir! You have to set forward or back a couple of older clocks? Boohoo, that takes, how long, under a minute per clock? You are late for work on Monday? Seriously, did you not realize that everything was off an hour on Sunday (argument doesn't hold, though, if you are like me and work on Sundays)?
I think people just like to moan and complain.
As for the original post, I am getting really pissed off at Ask Slashdot topics where the person could google the answer faster than they can type up a question to slashdot.
Stop using ads and start doing stuff like being an Amazon merchant. Link your reviews and stuff to your Amazon merchant account - when a user clicks through to buy something, they get revenue. There are several Blu-Ray review sites that do just that. Stop bombarding us with flash ads and stuff - give us your story, and a link to where we can buy the game. Happy users, and a solution to your issues.
Here is some links to sites that do just this:
http://www.highdefdigest.com/ (notice the ads are off to the side of the page, its not distracting, and relates to the site)
Both of these sites are very clean and well designed, do not bombard the users with ads, with the exception of links to buy movies, which is exactly why the users are at the site to begin with. The sites make enough from click-throughs to stay in business (unless movie companies are paying them to write reviews, which is possible). In any case, the sites are able to stay in business, pay operating costs and pay staff, and are able to keep from bombarding users with ads.
It's not that foreign of a concept. If I go to a review site, don't bombard me with a flash ad for Pepsi or some reverse-home-mortgage, or something. Just give me a link to where I can buy the product you are talking about.
Probably won't be a post that gets scored up, but I came very close to saying "dupe post". I know I saw this article yesterday or Sunday with the exact same headlines. After spending 20 minutes digging through Slashdot archives, and digging through all other news sites I have read in the past couple of days, it finally occured to me that I saw this in the Firehose yesterday. Oops.
Multi-screen view. Just because you have a 27 inch monitor doesn't mean that you want to have 10 windows open on it, especially if you are doing something like video editing (which the poster said he is doing computer programming, so that doesn't apply). Like I have my 19 inch as my workspace, and my 42 inch television setup as my preview, so I can see what my end-product will look like.
At work, I have three monitors. They are all about 21 inches, but I have so many programs I have to keep open at once, its a lot easier to tile them across multiple screens.
Truthfully, I think a 27 inch monitor is overkill for a programmer. It is probably too late to do this, but I would ask the boss if I could trade it in and get two or three 21 inch or 24 inch monitors (I think most laptops will only support 2 monitors - idk, you might be able to do three with a DVI, HDMI and a VGA port). Also, then the laptop won't look so dwarfed next to those monitors, so you could use that as a screen as well.
But that is not the point of the post, he was asking for advice on monitor stands. If its a 27 inch, just go to Amazon and look up LCD mounts, and you could probably just use a standard television mount. Shoot, the very first choice on Amazon seems to be bracket from Monoprice.
The blurb was so disturbing, I don't know if I even want to read the article. WHY would anyone do this? For that matter, what happens when the tadpoles mature? The frog is sitting on its eye. Could you imagine the pain that would cause.
And what is the point of this anyways? Sounds like something out of a horror movie. Sounds to me like these scientists need to be arrested.
Kickass is a horrible torrent site. There is so much garbage on their page, half the links lead to stuff you have to pay for (not in a legal way), most of the torrents I have seen don't have any seeders, its hard to find anything . Truthfully, if you can't find it on The Pirate Bay or on some private torrent site, your best bet is a Torrent Search Engine. KickAss is one of those sites that come up if you try to do a torrent search in Google.
Now I am not saying that the site is completely worthless, just saying that it needs a major redesign. Unless their goal is to TRY to confuse and mislead people.
So you are not going to pass the content to an HDMI capture card. Big deal - you use the USB cable to transfer the file directly to your computer. The only issue I see here is if the cable becomes kinked or something and you have issues with handshake. At which point, you curse Apple for not using industry standard MicroHDMI, and you pay 10 times the price.
Of course, if you are that concerned about DRM on your files, I am willing to bet you don't have an Apple phone anyways. Heaven forbid you download anything (music, movies, apps) through iTunes.
Maybe the amount of work actually done in the past 60 years has gone down because of union regulations (amount of time you are able to work a day, number of breaks required to give workers), regulations against child labor, regulation of minors in the workforce, and the possibility that a lot of jobs in the past 60 years (not all mind you) have turned from factories and physical labor to offices. Many occupations have also modernized and mechanized, increasing production and decreasing the need for physical labor.
While a 1-3 degree difference in temperatures (or even 5-10 degrees if you want to get drastic) is enough to cause global enviornmental issues, I doubt that anyone is going to say "Shoot, its 73 today whereas 60 years ago it was 70, Oh, its just too hot, I can't work today". "Oh, its summer in Phoenix, its 110 today instead of 107 it was 60 years ago on this day, oh, I just can't do anything".
Really really stupid corrolation.
That is like saying the number of viewers of the Today Show has increaded substantially over the past 60 years, so we are going to say that The Today Show has got to be the most awesome show on television, and take into no account the number of households who have bought televisions in the past 60 years, the population growth, or even comparing it to the actual percentage of total viewers now versus then.
Took the words right out of my mouth. This is why I hate redlight cameras. I got two tickets right now, and you can go in and review the videos, see I came to a complete stop, waited, and then made a right hand turn on red, which is perfectly legal. Now I have the choice of 1) paying the $75 a ticket 2) Paying $60 in court fees and missing a day of work to try to fight it (actually, that is two days - the first day you go in and plead guilty or not guilty, and if its not guilty then you are assigned a court date) or 3) chance them blocking my registration.
I've considered taking them to court to fight the legality of the red-light cameras, because in my state, the law clearly state that a witnissing officer has to be present to issue a ticket (an officer reviewing camera footage is NOT a physical presence), but I am sure a local judge on the city's payroll would probably just dismiss the case, and I would still have the court fees.
So what are you going to do? Pay the tickets, then start a petition to have those city council members voted out of their seats next election term. Because that is really the most you can do.
Oh, how about this - let's go something more serious. I have a friend who was thrown in prision, because someone who had a grudge against him accused him of abusing his kids. Trial was scheduled for a few months down the road, where he was found innocent, but during that time, he lost custady of his kids, was forced to attend parenting classes, and had to pay a $20,000 bail to get out of prision. He had to pay a lawyer to fight for him. Do you think he got any of tha tmoney back? What about psycological damages? Loss of income while he was in jail? Jail time on his background check? He is trying to get it removed from his record as he is wanting to go to the police academy.
The American justice system is broken, its a mockery, and should be completely overhauled. It only benefits those who have money - anyone who doesn't had better hope they never get accused of anything.
My understanding is that they won't throttle until at least the 4th notice. Plenty of time to sign up for a VPN service, and plenty of time to pay the $35 appeal. Also plenty of time to secure your wireless router.
received authorization to start using drones
From the article this link points to:
Police are quick to emphasize that the 4- to 5-foot-long aircraft aren’t the same as military drones.
The savings to the city is considerable.

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=how+many+time+zones+are+there
add that to
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=how+many+different+calendars+are+there
In particular, on the second link, I found this:
http://www.hermetic.ch/cal_stud/lunarcal/types.htm
Which state there are over 40 different calendars in use
So, I got 40 time zones, and 40 different calendars.
Now, if you want to get technical, instead of adding them, you would multiply the two, as each calendar could be used in any of the 40 time zones.
40*40 = 1600 POSSIBLE variations across the planet.
Seriously, people, learn how to use Google!
