I get at least ONE of those calls, a day, running the largest hotel for 40 miles around. I usually go, "Oh, I gave the girl/guy [switch it up, keep life interesting...wait, not like THAT] my credit card number and SS#. You should have it on file. (click)"
My BOSS gets 4-5 cold calls a day, though not typically from the (ahem) Google people. I just tell them he was recently killed in a car accident, you'll have to call back in a few months, once they get the estate sorted out. It was really bad, beheaded. They're still looking for the head."
I'm still using a gen-1 iPad. Mind you, I'm not a fan of Apple, loving my LG phone nearly as much as bacon, but I cannot deny that with moderate use, it's battery life can easily be measured in days. Sure, very limited memory, but I don't watch movies on it. When some 3rd party clones a gen1 iPad, hopefully with Android, but with more increased memory/storage/speed, I'll gladly replace it. Manufacturers are afraid of making them "too bulky", "too heavy"... a matter of a single-digit amount of ounces, is not going to hold me back, if it does what I want it to.
18 years old, watched the whole thing, from 20m before lift-off, right up until the explosion... Walked down to my father's office, stunned, and went, "The shuttle just blew up." He thought I was joking...
Dark ages for the space race...
I'm a big fan (pun fully intended) of having air circulating, and since I live in Hurricane Central, which also experiences frequent power black-outs from thunderstorms (Florida Plunder & Loot isn't the most efficient or reliable power company on this rock). I use my USB battery pack, to operate my USB-powered fan. I'd rather sit in the dark and be cool, than sit in the dark and sweat.
I've had an LG F3, for 18mos now - no intention of upgrading, because it does what I need it to, it's damn near indestructible, and I have had to "reboot" it no more than four times in ALL that time (not counting the times I had to reboot to recover past backups, to retrieve records for legal reasons). My LG flip-phone crashed more frequently. I only use ~6 3rd party apps, ISS Tracker, Battle.net [shush], Speedtest, Facebook, and, well, a couple others...
While I'm no fan of Apple, I respect them, they have a fine product. The crashes and all are mostly 3rd party software, and the vendor mods and additions to the OS.
(ok, I kid, I am thinking about upgrading, but only because I want something with IR).
I'm the GM of a large, non-brand, hotel south of Miami. But guess what, by trade, I'm a network engineer (I burned out, and I like the hotel business). But I had a hand in designing our new WiFi network. It's free to guests, just requires a 'token'/password for the guests to access, that everyone gets when they check in. I have the routers configured to limit each device to 5Mb, and even though I only have 100Mb bandwidth to the gateway, guests are always commenting on how we have the fastest WiFi in any hotel they've stayed at, even when we're full (160 rooms).
OK, I'm waiting to see how it works for the NASCAR championship in November, when there's going to be a couple hundred people watching streaming race clips all weekend... Might need to keep a fire-extinguisher next to the router...
I have an LG F3 (without the "Q" he mentioned in his title). I've had it for six months, and have had no major complains (except when you're putting a quote right after a word, it moves the quote back a space... So if I said GO "AWAY" - it'd come out GO" AWAY". That's minor in my book.
Was speaking to my Comcast rep at work, even business routers are bring converted, howevrr they will use a separate channel for the wifi network. Still sounds like a bad iidea to me.
On the contrary, reading older science fiction and writing a report through a lens of 50 years in the future can be quite useful.
I am unable to recall even a single iota of actual science in the book.
What about when Ender (read "a pilot") controls a Starship (read "a drone") from billions of (read "thousands of") miles away, to smite the enemy (read "the enemy")... Real-world science/technology as used in Ender's game (albeit on a much smaller scale).
One of the companies, in Florida anyway, that runs a chain of these (Gambling) Internet Cafes, was doing so supposedly to support American veterans. After a thorough audit of their business (which is partly responsible for this bill being drafted in the first place), it was found that out of the (10's of millions of) money the "organization" made that year, only 2% went to their charity, and a larger percentage going to political donations (which, apparently didn't help them much in the long run:> ).
Odd - one laptop is Ubuntu - the other Win7 - and they did not play well until I disabled any (Microsoft released) IPV6 support...Could be the old Netcreer router, but regardless....
If you go back to Win7 - make sure you disable the Microsoft forcibly-installed 6to4 adapter (just google it - there's plenty of posts about it) - because if you don't, and you're running an IPV4 home network, your linux box(es) will do nothing but complain....
I have an iPad, and two laptops - older of which I use primarily as a file server running Ubunti... when I went to Win7, I suddenly got crawling file transfer speeds, despite being on a hardwired full-duplex 100mbit network... once I disabled 6to4, it got happy again...
Personally speaking, I block most ads, mainly because of bandwidth issues. Slashdot is one of the few that I whitelist, because I don't mind supporting them....
There was a point a few years ago, I lost my phone, and was not at a point to replace it immediately, so I bought a cheap Pay-as-you-go phone, and activated it under my contract... Then a friend went "Hey, I still have my Android, since I went to the iPhone, you want it?"... Of course I did. Verizon didn't. They wouldn't let me turn it on for JUST phone service. DEMANDED I had to have a data plan for it.
me: "but I'm not going to use it for data..."
them: "but you could"
me: "only if I had a data plan"
them: "which is why we insist you have a data plan"
me: "so you make people buy a service they're not going to use just because they have the capability to use it?"
them: "Yes, you have a device that uses data."
me: "but I'm not going to use data."
them: "But you can."
me: "No, I cannot, without a data plan."
them: "Which is why we insist you have a data plan."
me: "Your logic would therefore dictate castrating ALL catholic priests, since they have balls, and the capability to use them, but they don't..." (and hung up)
Demanding a data plan on phones JUST because they have data capabilities is just an absolutely stupid idea, and we should probably start a White House petition to stop it. I'll get started on the draft immediately...
The fact that I found out - the hard way - that Seagate's warranty starts when their product(s) leave the factory - NOT when you actually purchase is. I purchased a Seagate drive, which failed two years later, and I attempted to call upon the "Five Year Warranty" - but oh, apparently NewEgg had said drive sitting on their shelves for three years (NOT knocking NewEgg - I love NewEgg and will for many more decades) - but Seagate considers THEIR warranty to start when it walks out the door, as opposed to when it was purchased.
BOYCOTT Seagate, until they stop this silly warranty concept - it's the only major manufacturer that I know of that considers their warranty to start when their product leaves the factory, as opposed to when it is SOLD....
I used to travel a LOT, on business - I bought these over-the-ear earphones for about $10 at Hel*Mart - they had about 40% better frequency response than the Sony ones that cost twice as much... Unfortunately, lost the last pair, and haven't been able to find the exact same ones again - but check out Panasonic headphones, definitely.
Smart enough to hack into an international company's network, but not smart enough to realize that an extortion attempt wouldn't have someone getting him arrested. Where is Darwin when we need him?:|
Not one comment regarding the "Oscillation Overthruster"? That was basically a laser that blasted it's way into the 8th dimension, taking our hero Buckaroo Bonzai along for the ride:)

I imagine it would also be appropriate for the Batmobile.
It's a sweet phone that a Macophile friend of mine said "It's a little slower than my 4S, but it seems easier to use..."

No, it's only the school teachers in the SouthEast that have penis inspection day.
Just sayin.'
Exactly my thought... it's like saying "This town stinks" when you visit the evening after their Baked Bean Eating Contest.

Oh puhleeze - if you were a true IT person, you wouldn't have a partner (that, or s/he would be on call too, so the point would be moot. :> )
