In the last three years my Exchange environment has had better uptime than Google Mail. I spent less than $50k on the setup and I'm getting better than 99.999% uptime too - actually closer to 99.9999%. That's something that Google has not been able to match yet.
Maybe I'm the exception, but I doubt it. There has to be other people with similar configs as my company. We're not doing anything special.
This is true of 99% of the iPhone Apps out there right now. Almost all of the functionality of these apps already exist on a website.
But for some reason it's cooler to waste time looking for the apps on Apple's site, downloading/paying for it, and then searching for the icon among your hundreds of icons on the screen.
I wasn't comparing Aug 30-Oct 20 to a year. I was comparing deaths during the flu season (roughly 4 months) to the average number of deaths during the year.
If the vast majority of flu deaths occur during the four to six months of the flu season then obviously there are more than 43 children who die from the flue during flu season.
"Forty-three children have died from swine flu since August 30 — about the same number that usually die in an entire flu season."
That statement is blatantly false. Over 35,000 people die in the US from the flu every year. Hundreds, if not thousands, of children die from the flu every year.
"Up yours, we don't have the resources to waste on your stupid crusade."
They don't have the resources, huh? Right. They have plenty of resources to fuck up everything else. By passing medical pot they actually increased the responsibility of the state to regulate the substance. But they are too stupid to know that.
I can honestly say that I spend less than $100,000 on my Exchange setup and have better uptime than gmail. ~200 users and 5 9's of uptime a year. Damn near impossible? Not really. Maybe for the incompetent, but not for a decent admin.
I have. No, I'm not lying. I get 5 9's uptime on my Exchange cluster every year. Plus, my user's get more features.....but don't let me rain on your parade.
This isn't a flame. RS really does suck. They are a spec of what they used to be. I can't go into stores and buy components anymore - actually it's been at least 10 years since I could buy electronic components. RS is all about gadgets anymore. They sell cheap electronics that I can get at 100 other stores. The problem is that I can't get resistors, capacitors, switches, LED's, displays, etc at RS anymore. So how is RS different from the big box retailers? They're not...except that they're smaller.
I thought the point of going to the moon was to build a base their to launch other missions. It takes much less fuel to leave the moon's gravity than it does the Earth's.
Not only that, but remember that the US won't have a vehicle to travel to the ISS after it's completed. Can you tell that this is a government-run operation?
And to think that we want the US government to get more involved in health care.....I can't wait!
Using one or two of your Win2003 boxes, create multiple DHCP scopes for your multiple networks/subnets. Then just use the "ip helper-address" on your cisco gear to allow the DHCP requests to make it to your servers. Done. I do this at my company with 50+ VLANs.
"I'm in favor of the government doing whatever it can do better then big business"
The government can't do anything better than the private sector with the exception of national defense.
You do realize that the government's administration costs of social security, medicare, and other bureaucracies is on the order of 3-4x what it costs the private sector, right?
I've broken too many tabs on the pre-made cables pulling them through walls and ceilings. It is definitely cheaper to buy bulk and terminate the ends yourself. Plus you will have the exact distance that you need, with service loops.
First off, AT&T has been providing data on P2P users to Mediacom for well over a year now. Mediacom uses AT&T as their provider and apparently Mediacom does not have the staff to monitor their network so AT&T does it for them.
Mediacom has also been disconnecting customers for excessive P2P usage as well as alleged copyright infringement. 2 coworkers that I know of had their service cutoff by Mediacom due to alleged copyright violations.
This behavior starts a slippery slope. Where does it end? If ISP are going to start monitoring traffic for specific content then are they liable for traffic that they don't catch?
Why are we trying to make unreliable sources like wind and solar a big part of our power grid?
I'm not sure if anyone else knows this, but the sun only shines for half of the day. We have no efficient means of storing and releasing electricity, so solar doesn't make sense. Wind is also unreliable. Towers must be shut down during storms due to high winds, etc... Can you imagine the power routing nightmare if we became too dependent on wind?
Pickens isn't doing anything new here, either. He is simply trying to get wind power in so that more of his company's natural gas can be used for cars. That doesn't really solve anything. If he truly cared about the energy crisis and a clean environment then he would be investing his money in hydrogen research.
I argue that high-speed telecommunications infrastructure is necessary for a 21st-century economy. I'd like to hear your thoughts as to why you believe differently.
I did give an example of why I disagree with municipal Internet access. Apparently you're attention spam is three seconds and you couldn't finish reading my post.
Internet access is not "necessary infrastructure".
Isn't it? I think that, with services such as local phone running over the Internet (eg. Vonage), there is a very strong argument that it is a necessary infrastructure. We think of electricity as a necessary infrastructure, yet in the early days many people were without it.
Vonage? Are you serious? Yeah, let's consider Vonage, one of the most unreliable VoIP providers on the planet, to be a necessary service.
No thanks. I'd rather stick with my switched circuits for reliable service.
I'm pretty sure that Exchange isn't the backend used for Hotmail.
In the last three years my Exchange environment has had better uptime than Google Mail. I spent less than $50k on the setup and I'm getting better than 99.999% uptime too - actually closer to 99.9999%. That's something that Google has not been able to match yet.

"Seems to me that it's not inconceivable that an ISP functions as a sort of post office"
The sole purpose of an ISP is to provide access to something. It is nothing like a post office.
"Year" != period between August 30th and Oct 20th

Good call....because...you know....disease isn't rampant throughout the gay population. *cough*AIDS*cough*

Off the top of my head... Facebook
Are you suggesting that it's the school's responsibility for the students to use social networking tools?

Leave that up to the private sector. The private sector can react faster to an event than the government with all of it's bureaucratic mess.
Hardly vaporware. Its in production.
False. It's in pre-production. RTFA. It's not in production until it's being shipped to dealers.

Cost = $0.
VMware Distributed Power Management
Supposedly it will cut your server power usage by 50%.

The tens of thousands of innocent women, children and men that he killed would beg to differ.

At one point in our history, electricity wasn't necessary infrastructure either.
Hence the TVA.
