I'm a long time user of VLC. I use it on windows 8 currently. I don't want to see a metro version because metro apps are full screen only, and that's not for me. The regular VLC works just fine in win8 so basically they're raising money to more or less create a VLC skin...

There's obviously a market for Windows 8 apps, and over 1200 people currently want that app to be produced. I do agree with you that Win8 apps shouldn't -replace- regular apps, but they have their (limited) use. For instance, I hardly ever use my video player non-fullscreen, so I can see the idea here.

This is a great example of Open Source working as intended. Some people want a feature, they realize people may not work for free for it, and funds are raised so those interested can be the ones giving the money to get it produced. Then, once it's done, the entire world benefits from the software and its source code.

I don't even use VLC, but even if I hate Windows 8 as much as the next guy (yes, I tested it..), I can't see anything wrong with this.

There are no "exploits" used to root the devices. This isn't a Steve Jobs Phone. You can unlock the bootloader of Nexus phones with a single command, and you can root the device simply by adding two packages from recovery. There's no security hoops used to get through protection of any kind. It Just Works.

Now, for neutered devices by certain manufacturers, you may need an exploit. But Google has always said that the platform is open on purpose.

  20. Re:my suggestion on Ask Slashdot: the Best Linux Setup To Transition Windows Users? · · Score: 1

you'd have to be a Linux expert to know them in the first place.

And what is wrong with that, exactly? There is literally no reason to use the root account directly 99% of the time. Is it a problem that you have to be an expert to figure out how to do it while doing other expert stuff? No. And I'm saying this even though it's really not expert knowledge.

I have no idea what their file structure is or what any of the text commands are since, once again, I am not a Linux expert.

So why do you expect to be able to do complex stuff if you are incompetent?

Ubuntu is supposed to be the version for any random person who's good with computers but not used to Linux to sit down and use.

And Ubuntu will be easy to use for any random person that doesn't want to fuck about the root account for no reason.

But thanks for defending the stereotype that you have to be an absolute know-everything expert to use any versions of Linux.

We're not talking about "using" here. We're talking about purposely taking control of the most important account on the entire OS, something that the average user will never have to do. This has NOTHING to do with the typical ease of use of Ubuntu, and only has to do with how flipping retarded you have to be in the first place to expect this shit to be easy for your grand mother. Let me tell you, it's not easier on Windows to gain access to SYSTEM.

Go grab some random person off the street and sit them down at Ubuntu and tell them to install a piece of software as a test for ease of use

Sure. That person will either use "sudo apt-get" if they are a power user or they will use the graphical interface (synaptic) if they are not a power user. In both cases, they will not need to use the root account directly, only through their own user passwords (using sudo/gksudo).

and then yell at them for not knowing to type in a command to run the shell as root and see if that still seems logical to you.

What's illogical is running a shell as root for no reason whatsoever.

I don't know why you expect Google's official instructions to install Android be on the CyanogenMod website, but they are quite simply:

Download the factory image once it comes out (it will be either a full image or an update package), rename it to update.zip (might be unnecessary) and then place that file on the root of your /sdcard partition (Whatever is accessible when you turn on USB sharing). The upgrade will be done the next time the phone boots.

The factory images will come out AFTER the OTA, though, so if you have an unlocked phone it is either already done (Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7) or it is upcoming (Nexus S, Nexus S 4G, Xoom, others)
