Glad I don't live in the US - The whole paying to receive calls and messages is unheard of here (NZ) and as far as I am aware, most other countries around the world. . Unless roaming and then I believe universally you are pinged with exorbitant cost.

Mostly, as you said because the media conglomerates have been lobbying for the US to "Protect the nations intellectual property so that the US will make more money" and the local versions of the RIAA in these other countries (that are made up of the same businesses) have been pushing their politicians to accept these agreements so that their companies will make more money and not lose it to them evil pirates.
So now they propose using mice as some sort of external testicles. (furry flesh bags used for containing and growing sperm). Small and portable enough to carry in a pocket, purse or such?
People used to tell me that my wife carried my balls in her handbag - this brings it closer to relaity.
