Patience. "Lord Bitman", a 15-year old's internet moniker if I ever heard one, will probably look back on this conversation and cringe himself one day, if he remembers it.
More important than the Israeli astronaut's nationality is what he was doing up there. These fuckers en masse can't agree on living side by side but a (tragically small) few have no problem working together for the common good. The world needs more people like them.
Remember when the Kursk sunk and every wanker was making jokes about the Kursk arming and locking onto a target@127.0.0.1?
Slashdotters are a dime a dozen, men with the testicular fortitude to do what these people do are very fucking rare, and if you'll kindly fucking excuse us, alot of us just don't know any other way to fucking respond. Other than crying. So fuck off.
Locate, if you will, the Mythical Man Month by Fred Brooks. Laugh as you read about how you had to pay money to reserve 4k of memory. Cry as you realize that what was true about Software Engineering 25 years ago is still true today.
Management does not like cowboys. When they say "BUILD ME SOFTWARE RAAWR" they usually want some sort of estimate of when the software is built, but more importantly they want to know what the likelyhood of it being built is. Single programmers cannot build large software on their own, so (large) teams of programmers must efficiently work together to get things done. Software Engineering is the who/what/where/when/how/why of building large software with large numbers of people.
I would like to state, for the record, that combining Swing and Java3D leads to an end result that is slow as balls. If you have to do 3D, use SDL or something else.
I can't find it on their website, but according to an email I got, the March '03 issue of Dr. Dobbs Journal is supposed to have an article on SVG if any of you are not content to read about it online.
Microsoft used to make cross compilation for MFC a big priority, but let's face it: if you're on Windows and not coding using WinForms or WTL, wtf are you doing?
It doesn't matter how badly you want to learn another language, if you don't have a member of the opposite sex handy who speaks the language you're interested in, you simply won't have the necessary motivation. Software can't help w/ that.
Anyone have any background on these people? Aren't they the same guys who said, "carpal tunnel doesn't count as a disability so programmers who have it are SOL"?
If you're only using Windows servers and Windows clients, you use.NET because you'd be stupid not to.
If there are any non-Windows components ANYWHERE in the mix, stick w/ J2EE.
I prefer Windows myself, but you don't want your customers to say "We like this leeeeeeeenux thingee" when you've got a huge set of WebForms and WinForms already done.

Sorry, but that's not fair. For some reason, it's as if they completely and totally forgot to do regression testing w/ the goddamned release.
utime doesn't work. That means touch doesn't work. gzip doesn't work. error messages don't get reported.
I begged my boss to roll php 4.2.3 off the servers and he did as soon as he saw what I was talking about...
Other versions of php are just fine, check 'em out!
I'm surprised they aren't trying to pull them off immediately. When the Yacht Club (I know I know, buncha dorks) here at Stevens Tech lost a boat (dinky little thing), the school was planning to leave it at the bottom because it the cost of bringing it up would be too much. Then the Army's Engineer Corp found out and went crazy about all the rules we were violating.
It's too bad our seniors are too incompetent to get a winning entry in the underwater autonomous submersible competition... It'd be cool to explore the wrecks ourselves...
Miyamoto does not earn royalties on the games he designs... He's a salary man, just like all good Japanese people should aspire to be.
A salary man for god's sake! He works his ass off for less than fair compensation! His only motivation HAS to be creating good games, who here would honestly think he's trying to hold the game industry back on purpose?! WTF! Slow news day @ Wired, need to sell some ad banners?
Everyone here knows that this encryption's weakness is water...

Ah, I suck. Just go to MC Frontalot's website and hear for yourself.

Someone's signature out there still holds my question stupidly posted to usenet back in the day: Was Shub-Internet a real Lovecraft character?
At the height of the Pokémon frenzy, Nintendo sued itself. The law firm responsible was let go the next day.
The point? Hey, if it could happen to one big company, it could happen again anywhere!
