(not all Israelis agree w/ the govt and not all Israelis are Jews and not all Israelis live in Israel, so I'm not sure who "them" is here.)
Why are you shocked? Slashdot has reached the sort of critical mass that if any X Slashdotters hate "them", then however small X is, at any given time at least one member of X must have mod permissions, which means that some of this shit is eventually gonna get modded up. There are enough other people w/ mod & metamod access to mod them back down, so it's not that big a deal.
Refer to that "why do smart people defend stupid ideas" story, I guess.
Why not blame everything on terrorists? It works. Behold:
Before the Soviet Union collapsed, everything evil was blamed on communists, and any response, no matter how stupid, was deemed acceptible in order to fight communism. And it "worked". The Soviet Union's collapse occured after the US did all sorts of stupid things in the name of fighting communism, therefore the fall of communism *must* have been brought about by America's direct intervention!
Fighting terrorism is no different. And I quote:
We were told this massive bureacracy was necessary to fight terrorism. We gave them lots of money and damn near everyuthing that had been on the law enforcement communities wish list since Oklahoma city, and now, after the fool's trade-off of protections of liberty for security of terrorism, they are using those tools and that money and their authority for issues that fall decidedly out of the realm of war on terror. Just like all those whacky bastards at the ACLU said. Just like all the the crazy Big L libertarians said they would.
They don't seem so whacky and crazy anymore, do they? -John Cole
Homeland Security is a bigger threat to the American way of life than anything Osama bin Forgotten can come up w/. Feel free to do something about it...
Has anyone here received these notifications? What do they look like? Is it a separate envelope saying, "Your data may have been compromised, follow these procedures, shred these documents, take these precautions in the future. Please." I fail to understand how any discussion of privacy can possibly take place w/out mentioning ZabaSearch.
I even submitted it to/. the other day, but I guess the editors didn't want any random/.er to search for their home phone numbers and every single place they've ever lived.
If the submitter was the opposing force in an Encyclopedia Brown story, then you just solved the mystery w/out having to turn to the back of the book...
If Nintendo can come up w/ some way to top 4 Swords, then it's all good.
I'm not too concerned about consoles or whatnot, but the idea that the Revolution can play GameCube games really appeals to me. This will save me space and money.
The point is that I now have all of your details (including your driver's license #, w00t!) by just walking in the same general area that you're in. Now emptying your bank account is as simple as confirming your details when I call up the bank w/ the sob story that I forgot my pin.
Also, tomorrow I have to blow up Microsoft's HQ in Redmond. Homeland Security, being smart as fuck, already know about my plans, so they sent George Bush and Bill Gates a letter saying "OSAMA BIN OMLETTE IS ABOUT TO BLOW UP MICROSOFT. DO SOMETHING." That won't be a problem for me, because if anyone asks for my papers, please, I'll just hand over my National ID card that says, "Jim Callahan". And since National ID cards are unforgable, no one will question me.
I would take these guys more seriously if they weren't using SQL Server:(
If I wanted the REAL ID act to pass w/out opposition, I'd create a site that purported to send faxes to senators and then I'd email boingboing saying "Look! You can fight back! Without doing any real work!"
Like decades if not centuries of maps can't help there.
There's a really good book called The Great Hedge of India that touches on this sort of thing. Basically, in India, everything moves around so much that maps are worthless after a couple of years.
I'm not saying you're wrong about Pakistan though, just that you're wrong about archived maps of India...
Hudson County's reasonably large, and I guess it's called that because you can see the Hudson River from parts of it.
Hoboken is directly across the Hudson from Manhattan, NY.
The Hoboken Train Station LR stop and the Exchange Place (Jersey City) LR stop allow you to hop onto the PATH trains, but you still have to pay PATH fare. If you have a bus pass, I believe those are allowed to be used as LR tickets though, so that's nifty...
I'm pretty sure he meant, calling up the credit bureaus for a fraud alert when you *suspect* something's awry, like your wallet's gone missing. You're right, Chicken Littles will only get what they deserve...
Even if someone time travelled into the past for a few seconds, wouldn't they wind up in the icy cold of space while the planet speeds along on its normal course around the sun?
No one's interested in high speed trains because most companies can rent a car, write it off, and drive at well above the speed limit (say, 80 miles/hour or so), and make better time than an Amtrak could... Until intercity train prices come down, it's just not competitive.
In Hudson County, NJ, they're busy on a light rail system. My little sister loves it, and it does seem to be meeting its usage quotas... But it's anything but high speed. My guess is that you'll see more things like this in semi-crowded areas where they can't handle adding more roads but desperately need to reduce car traffic.
A while ago, I ran into this blog story about preventing identity theft... The "call up the credit bureaus and file a social security # fraud alert" tip is probably the best.

Bad ideas exist for a reason. Each failure is a lesson to learn from...
Good, let them fight. When all of their energy is exhausted, we will show them the true follow of their "browser war"!

My bad, I didn't find out about it until January or so.
Um, the game of the year is still Cave Story, despite everyone else's multi-million dollar budgets...
Let EA, et al spend all the money they want, good for them.
Worse comes to worse, we'll always have games like Deanimator from people who aren't only about money... so chill.

But if it does wonders for Christian fundamentalists every goddamned time they want things their way, then why can't it work for us? Just once?
In the linked page, someone in the comments posted PHP code that's very clearly wrong... The dangers of cutting and pasting!

Did anyone see the most recent episode of the new Doctor Who? It's on topic if you saw it, it's a spoiler if you didn't...
In any case, maybe the Germans are just throwing alot of vinegar down the drain and don't realize where it's all going...
