Wizards may have chosen the setting, but Turbine did some things very well. From my perspective you couldn't be more wrong about the combat - that is THE way to take a turn based table-top game and make it a real time FPS.
DDO is instanced; the only un-instanced areas are public areas and PVP pits. The most a griefer can do is try to trick into letting them in your party or annoy in public places. Either way they can't kill you, and they can't get your stuff.
That said I suspect F2P will make my ignore list much bigger.
As to why you would play DDO.. for one thing it has the best combat of any MMO. Fast, real-time, twitch driven. It has no competitors there except for late unlamented Hellgate. And many of the rules still resemble D&D v3.5.
It's the only MMO I have stuck with, and I have tried many. WoW? No way.
To coin a phrase: Rome has no kings, Rome needs no kings. The Romans threw out their last king around 500 BC, had an aristocratic Republic until Augustus made himself Princeps (he ruled roughly 17 BC- aD 14, I don't have the dates in front of me). After that it was an Empire, ruled by an emperor, with a senate.. but never a Kingdom again.
In any event our records are from ice cores, not the observations of any ancient observer. There was no way to gauge temperature until Fahrenheit invented his scale, anyway.
I think Paizo's motives are simpler, and have little to do with the STL question. They know there will be a long-term demand fro v3.5 products from legions of gamers like myself who don't go to 4th edition. I clung to 1st edition for 20 years.. so I expect to sue 3.5 for ages yet.
It's just smart business for Paizo to pick up a part of the market abandoned by Wizards.
>In 1970, 1.5GHz, 512MB, 80GB would be an billion-dollar-expensive, multiple-building-sized computer.
As far as Hertz, No such thing was possible in 1970 or 1990. Supercomputers don't use higher clock speeds to do their work - those 1980s Crays (the ones with the seat cushions!) ran at speeds on the order of 25MHz.
GW is doing or trying to do all you say, but sensible Americans have stepped away from the precipice he is on. He is losing his hold on this country's politics. We'll dump him in the ash can of history, soon enough.
Not according to all the relevant Telecom acts it ain't. That's my private info, and they can't just sell it to other companies or release it to law enforcement WITHOUT (watch the boucning ball, kids) WITHOUT A WARRANT. Thank you.
Again, thanfully, the fact that you are willing to surrender, forever, your basic constitutional rights does not forfeit mine. And I do do not much begrudge defending yours even when you do not value them. Suck it.
Wrong. The WaPo poll broke several basic norms used by polling organizations. The most basic problem with the poll was strongly leading language in the questions.
Do some googling on the WaPo pollster - Morin. He's damaged goods, and he's slanted other polls for political effect. Call him sometime and ask him why he hasn't run a poll to see how many Americans favor impeaching the president.
"And in light of this, Bush would STILL get re-elected if he could run."
That explains the 29-34% approval ratings he's getting? He was still in the high fifties when he squeaked through the 2004 election with 51% of the vote.
Think about that. John Kerry got 49% of the votes. Does he strike you as a strong candidate? Now think about all the voters in Ohio the GOP got to the polls by virtue gay baiting.
>"You're deluded, dude. You must have missed the slashdot article a few days ago about >the polling results that show 63% of Americans support the NSA operations."
You are referring to the Washington Posts slanted "snap poll" of only 500 respondents. Newseeek has conducted a larger poll since with proper methodology and has found:
I'm really disappointed by the/.er comments on this article. I would think that this group would be less susceptible than the general public to the straw-man and question-begging games played in the media by those interested in delaying the day of reckoning.
Logical Fallacies:
"Only Economics Matter:" whenever responsible people talk about the consequences of our hydrocarbon burn-off, change the subject to a narrow argument about economic costs; one that ignores the cost of ecological damage and ocean rise and paint a worse-case scenario for emissions caps.
"The Jury is still out:" a small group of corporate scientists exist for only one reason - to generate FUD about clear scientific consensus on emissions, toxins, and biology. Don't buy their bull. Responsible scientists agree that human contributions to carbon-dioxide emissions and destruction of natural resources are contributing to the heating of the Earth.
"It doesn't matter because of x:" ah we'll soon be out of oil anyway. Suuuure. Or the apocalypse is almost here, or we'll magically come up with new technology the "day after tomorrow," if you catch my drift. Note the glowing someday of the hydrogen car. This is an interior line of defense after the other rationalizations have been shot down.
Please, those of you who want to dismiss, ignore, or argue against the real scientific conclusions about global warming, I require you, I INSIST you find some new way to argue the point.
Advanced Squad Leader. According to its adherents (incl. me), the greatest chit wargame ever sold. Of course, I mostly play miniatures now - Seekrieg, homebrews, you name it.
For my part, I read it as: "Linux is succeeding in the appliance market and I acknowledge there is no comparable WIndows product." The discussion certainly was not about desktyops or security per se at that point.
There seems to be a real failure to understand what he said about firewall appliances.
He said appliance. That's not "built-in" -- a server appliance is a turnkey box that is quick to drop into a network without traditional system administration. Allot and Packeteer are two good examples of *nix systems you never see the OS on.

I beg to differ dude; I work in St. Pete and I live in Largo. PI-nellas Park and Kenneth City fit the bill for a ghetto - wait, so does St. Pete. South of Central's quite the dump.:)

Have you read the report of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change? Or any of the reams of reports issued by the US and EU? No real data?
A la Phil Rizzuto I wish I had a nickel for every time I hear a fellow American bloviate about climate change without knowing the facts.
How nice for you. Unfortunately, your uninformed opinion does not agree with the results of a great deal of actual science.
Roman Kingdom? Kingdom?!

but still impossible! No amount of dollars in 1970 could have bought you a 1 GHz processor.

How else do you put traps in for your competitors software?
