    The folks I worry about with copyright are small artists who either themselves make a living off of their work, or who have living relatives who do so. These are the people that copyright needs to protect, and these are the same people who cannot afford to pay to extend that protection.

    Yeah, and from what I understand about the current state of copyright law, it's also pretty hard to write a check when you've been fucking dead for 70 years .

    I think it's totally worth the risk. The problem with science/research is that no one sees the value of it until it's been done, only after the seemingly pointless work. I'm not surprised everyone thinks it's not worth the risk. But I'll bet if you resurrected the crew of the Columbia, they'd tell you it was worth it.

    Great achievements are never born of safety and cautious steps. The argument about whether or not our research is worth something is a valid one. We're definitely politicking NASA's cash away on some of the shuttles' payloads. But we shouldn't stop just for the fear of death. I'd risk death to help the cause of human progress. I'm not sure i can agree with anyone who values their life more than that.

    If Linux had an exploit that allowed someone to ssh into your box, su to root, then fsck your harddrive, and a patch wasn't released yet, would you be pissed off that bugtraq posted the code to exploit the bug?

    Well, idunno about the whole su to root thing, but it certainly gives me piece of mind that someone out there is willing to check my hard drive to make sure no files have become corrupted. ;-)

    Granted, I've never been a fan of the whole All-American aspect of superman of Superman. You get the idea that he was the bully getting cheerleader action behind the bleachers while giving Super-wedgies to the geeks in school. But the guy is a fucking alien, so of course he's going to win in a fight against anybody who isn't made of some sort of wierd ass rock ;-)

    Look at it this way, who wins in all those alien vs. human stories you hear about? The human, or the anal probe?

    Funny. Barbie is a disproportionate doll. If she were a "real" woman, she would be something on the order of 42-DD (I can't remember the exact proportions). And yet, most parents have no trouble buying these blatantly sexist dolls for their little girls.

    Now, this begs the question: Which object does more harm to women? The game that is played by teenaged boys looking to see a girl in daisy dukes bounce her well rendered boobies up and down while holding firearms, or the toy that teaches impressionably young girls that, when they grow up, they should be thin, blonde, and busty or else they're not worth a shit.

    Funny, how is your interpretation literal?

    To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries;

    So, this obviously means we can give the authors of works sole custody of their intellectual property for a "limited" period of time. That being said, how is it possible to give an individual that no longer exists a copyright? Better yet, what would we have done if Walt Disney had specified in his will that everything having to do with Mickey Mouse be buried with him, so that it would effectively never enter the public domain. Certainly this would not promote the progress of art or science. The issue here is that Congress believes the words "limited time" are based on the timeline of the universe. I don't think the framers of the constitution meant this "limited time" to be relative to the duration of earth.

    Based on the congretional interpretation of this clause, you would think it might read something more like:

    To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors, Inventors, [and their heirs and estates] the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries;
