  1. Signing up without a windows box... on Does Comcast Hate Firefox? · · Score: 1

    I recently signed up for comcast service (they were 1 of only 2 broadband choices for me). The installer was unable to get my internet service working, all he did was get it where I could open a page with my browser that allowed me to download a windows executable that does some sort of setup for windows machines. I had to wait several hours until the installer had gone back to their service center and processed the paperwork. Then I was able to call comcast and give them the information about my cable modem that they required.

    It was totally ridiculous and unnecessary, but at least it is only 1 time. I haven't had any problems since then.

    Oh, and the installer tried to charge me an extra $15 for connecting a second cable line (I ran the cable) to the splitter (which was already there). I realize that he is contracted by Comcast to do the work and doesn't directly work for them. This 12 seconds of work for $15 amounts to attempting to steal $15 as far as I'm concerned.

    Yeah, that's fairly accurate... you just need to add some misspellings and replace a couple of words there with random words from a dictionary. Then you will have an English user's manual written by a Chinese engineer/salesman/whatever.

    I just wish people would stop misusing the word refugee. These people are evacuees, not refugees. Take a look here.

    Under international law, refugees are individuals who:
    • are outside their country of nationality or habitual residence;
    • have a well-founded fear of persecution because of their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion; and
    • are unable or unwilling to avail themselves of the protection of that country, or to return there, for fear of persecution.
    It bothers me a lot that people are casting a shadow over the true meaning of such a powerful word. While unfortunate, the people who left LA, MS, and AL are not refugees.
  5. Buy what you need on Building Secure Computers? · · Score: 1

    The computer itself matters very little (as far as classification goes). If it will be on a network, all of the encryption will be handled by an external device. You should already know that though.

    Point being, choose the hardware based on what you need to run the programs it will be used for.

    If this game is based on the serial number of a lottery ticket, and the game can figure out if the number is a winner, then all that needs to be done is figure out the algorithm to figure the dollar amount a number is worth. (Since the game can do it without an internet connection then it must be predetermined)

    At that point you would have to go around and buy a ticket here and a ticket there until you find one that has a serial number near one of the winners you have discovered.

    Then just buy enough tickets so that you get your winning serial number.

    However, I find it scary the number of college girls (well, not just girls but mostly) who rely solely on a floppy disk to hold important work. When I used to work in the labs (Purdue) I would hear from some girl who had a damaged floppy that held a research paper or whatever. "But I worked for weeks on that paper, what do you mean it is gone?" Point is: the floppy is still very much alive, just probably less so by those who are computer savvy.
