  1. Re:I welcome my RFID tag on The Trouble with RFID · · Score: 1

A friend of mine does triathlon and he wears a name tag on his shoe. RFID tags could alos be used for this - they are small and light weight.

The reason they wear the tags is because if something happens, there is some information about themselves which people can use. It all started when someone was killed/severly injured (not sure which) when training on the roads and nothing could be done because an identity could not be resolved for a long time.

The tags are named after the person who's unfortunate accident inspired them. But unfortunatly I forget who.

My main issue is this, the knowledge base is huge - there are thousands of articles, therefore although the article is there how many *normal* people actually read it ? The people that need the information the most are those that are less computer literate and the same people that would rather be playing flash games than reading a document on a "geeky computer" website.

It is same with the "oh they should use another browser", at the end of the day they dont really care until they get bitten - and even then they will make the same mistakes again. I personally think that the software update mechanism (where the window pops up if there are updates) is great under OS X. You would have to be really retarded to ignore it.

Maybe Windows and Linux could do with something like this ? I know debian has it's security feed (which I use), but it'd be useful if it alerted me that there were updates. I also remember there being a update manager but maybe it shouldn't allow you to not install the security updates. (Please forgive my lack of knowledge of the recent windows situations WRT updates- I rarely use it so please dont flame back but I would be genuinely interested to know - for the sake of my parents computers)

    Anyway, end of post.

Great to program with - I wrote a vm in an exam because I was bored and too suspicious to leave early.

Even things like bezier curves were fun to get going.

The only thing that anoyed me was that the TI-85 had no means of finding out if a pixel had been turned on or off in the graph view (the way you did graphics). The TI-82 had it, but not the TI-85. Why is this anoying ? It makes collision detection very hard to do and thus gaming was somewhat limited. So even though I was Mr-Fancy-Pants with my TI-85, I couldn't get the good games that my friends with the TI-82 could. Although I did write an elementry space invaders game in the text mode part of the calculator in a double lesson of pure mathematics.

This is a third hand story, but I am going to tell in anyway.

There was a chap, at our University possibly, that started a PhD in Computer Science. The subject matter isn't that important, but the method with which he conducted he research was truly novel.

One of the first things he did was goto the library and start by going at random to bookshelves and picking out a book. He would then flick to a random page and start reading. After a week he had amassed a set of random ideas for random subject areas, chose one and then based his work on converging what he had read and his area of interest (which I think was vision processing). The net result was a novel and very well received PhD and set of papers.

Reading the parent comment reminded me of this story.

I could have, and probably have, got it completely wrong but it does show the merits of accidental discovery of ideas and information.

My knee jerk reaction was to recommend linux as it comes with a whole host of development tools. Unfortunatly you need to be pretty switched on to get the ball rolling [Makefiles, Editor choice, compiler settings etc etc]. It wasnt until I opened up Project Builder [for the fith time today] that I realised that that is where the answer lies.

It is plainfully simple to write programs and design user interfaces and connect it all together. It supports a number of different main stream languages and there are loads of tutorials on the internet. The best thing is that all these tools come with Mac OS X on the developer cd so you dont have to fork out once again.

If I had a kid wanting to learn to program I would get them a Mac and let them play. Failing that, I would get DOS 5 out and let them use GW-Basic within a Virtual PC Window.

So there we go. Thats what I reckon.

I honestly live my life on a day-by-day, week-by-week basis enjoying the things I do and look forward to things that I will hopefully be doing tomorrow or next week. I dont want money and to be hugely rich [granted it is nice - but I am not going to dedicate my life to obtaining it only to die with it all in the bank]. What am I going to do? Well, I want to learn about model helicopters, I want to race my radio controlled car. I want to go back to Australia and spend more time there. I want to write a perl compatible regular expression library even though PCRE already exists so I can learn how Non-deterministic finite automaton work on the implementation side of things. Doing things like this are far more important [in my eyes] than the pursuit of being rich and famous [which is what most people class as being successfull].

I am enjoying my life at the minute learning through my Ph.D. and hacking on my opensource projects. All I can say, is that I consider success not in monetry terms but in what I have learned for myself and the happiness that comes from it. Some people would say that I am being silly with all this and I should join the Real World. This is my Real World.

I suppose my final word is this, do what you want because it makes you happy, not because you feel you have to. Ultimatly the only person that can judge whether you have been successfull is yourself.
