Nuclear is not necessarily constant. Its a lot easier and cheaper to run it constant. Some plants (not in the US) will do a daily load follow operation. They'll step the control rods in half way at night and run it at 50% power.

Its entirely possible to run a nuclear plant with active load follow though. The core power output will respond pretty quickly to control rod movement. Thing is nuclear power plants only get 1/3 efficiency or there about so getting a few extra percent savings at the generation side vs running a constant power and dumping the energy elsewhere in the system isn't usually worth it. Also running active load follow really wears parts out pretty quickly.

Then in a whole other window there's the random youtube, flash games and stumble upon results. Always keeping facebook and gmail in the same tabs limits the chances of me being tricked by this by anything i regularly log into. WTF is gmail doing all the way over here!?

In order for China to learn that we will no do business with them if they have human rights issues, it would have to be true. Fact is we do plenty of business with them while they have major human rights problems. Maybe its time WE learn not to do business with them until they improve.

Maybe we should stop pretending that China is a "developing nation" while turning a blind eye to the fact that it has the third largest GDP in the world. GDP by nation (no the EU isn't a nation).

Maybe we should stop trading with them until they let their currency reach the actual market value instead of what the Chinese Govn't pegs it as. RMB (now pegged against a basket of other currencies instead of just the $)

Problem is they own our debt.... Maybe we should tighten our belts instead of borrowing more and more money from China?

After the use of reprocessing plants you get two different kinds of nuclear waste, when separated. One kind is highly radioactive and gives off a ton of heat, but has a pretty short half-life (the "dangerous" stuff). The other kind is only mildly radio active, but has a very long half life (not so dangerous). You could take the "dangerous" stuff and break it down into manageable lots, and use them to run these batteries.

Ironically many of the European cars which are more fuel efficient, don't meet the American Emissions Standards, so we can't just switch it over. (Need to review the regulation at least)

Nuclear waste isn't as large of a problem as people imagine. If you were to take all the nuclear waste from the entire history of all nuclear plants in the US and stacked them on a football field, you wouldn't even have a stack 10m high. Moving forward with reprocessing plants and such, the amount of waste is very low.

As for the price of a nuclear plant. It is a bit pricy to build a plant, but once its up and running it practially prints money. A fuel cycle lasts almost 2 years. You put in your uranium and fire it up and all you do for the next two years is make electricity and keep a couple guys around to regulate the plant. No need for tons of coal or oil.

A new plant has a "fixed" life of 60 years, but often after an inspection the NRC will issue a an extension for 20 or more years. Whats the life time of a coal or oil plant?
