You're right. Accepting government money (in the form of a loan, tax break) only invites the government to poke their nose deeper into your business.

If a smaller business can't make an AAA game, maybe they should focus on a simpler game that is just as fun to play?

There are plently of companies which do this with public data, not just WestLaw, LexisNexis, who are the largest in their field.

The problem is this: The government either outsources the electronic publication of their information, or these companies hired people to go out and scan the public documents.
If it is the latter, then they have every right to charge access to their database- they've complied the data on their dime! However, if the government outsourced the publication, then the database should fall into public domain.

I recall one other database which did title searches on property, which were built completely from public data, and was sold back to the county and state because such a tool did not exisit until then, and to redevelop such a tool wasn't worth the effort (at the time). The data was public domain, but the relationships inside the DB was not.

    • Travel
    • Friends / Family
    • Art
    • Keeping my mind sharp
    • Being with someone
Some of my goals are easy. I just finished a 3 week vacation in Paris with a week in Val Thorens (Apls ski resort), met a bunch of great people and spent time with my sister and her husband.
Other goals are very hard, Being with someone, my relastionships don't workout, and that hurts. Others like keeping my mind sharp is why I like programming (the puzzles of solving problems), and art (relaxes the mind).
Life is what you make of it- so make the most of it.

Okay, so I missed the time frame, and based my statement on semesters being 4 months long, with summers off. It's been a while since I was in school. Kudos for catching that one.

    BUT: You missed my point.

The school is about game design, which does take creativity to begin with (I'd hope...), so classes about designing puzzles, writing, composing music, etc, should be included. Being there with other students in a like minded manner should begin out the best in each of them, but I'm afriad that with the focus being on a FPS, you will end up with 'group think', and no orginality.

Things that I think would make the school better would be classes on Game Theory, Arts and Culture, Music, along with a health dose of what they already are offering. Open up the student's mind to various things and see where a random connection takes a student. They might come up with the next Tetris game (a game that is simple to learn, hard to master, and quite fun to play hours on end).

  22. Looked at the web site on Guildhall at SMU Q&A · · Score: 4, Interesting

And wasn't impressed. Then I looked at what was offered and really wasn't impressed.

The courses end with you building a FPS game. Where are the classes on designing puzzles, creative writing, composing music, and everything else that goes into being a game designer and developer? Not downplaying what is offered, but there is more to a game play than real time lighting effects and game physics.

Sega's web site once had a great set of articals title "So you want to be a game designer?", and one of the first things they said was to take a shape (like the DC swirl) and describe it, it's function and purpose. That type of streching the mind brough forth games like Ecco and Jet Grind Radio (not to mention Crazy Taxi, Chu Chu Rocket and so on).

If you're going to be there for 3 years, I'd hope more is taught about being a developer and designer of games than level design, art design and FPS design.

    Way down in the footnotes:
[13] It's sometimes argued that we should be working on filtering at the network level, because it is more efficient. What people usually mean when they say this is: we currently filter at the network level, and we don't want to start over from scratch. But you can't dictate the problem to fit your solution.
This is where the problem of spam will be solved, by having a web of trust between the mail servers, that sign the message in a maner which makes it easier to back track a message and if these servers also do filting, well we kill two birds with one stone. The problems are:
    • CPU intensive
    • Need to look at every message
    • Seeding the filter database
    • Building trust with other servers
    And others of course.
Think about this one, what does the typical email a porn star would get look like? What we think of spam, might not be someone else's.
    How would the system scale?
And what would stop a spammer from installing a server with a bogus filter database, or just signing off on each message as being legit?

Perhaps filtering based on each user's personal corpus of valid email is the only workable solution, or that spammers will kill off email as a usable means of communication.
