>> The way they state how it works ("We are using 100.000 unique words") sounds like they have given up on that part long ago and just recycle their old database again and again...
I think they recycle the database of words that are known, not the ones also proffered up that are unknown to the API, so the book building continues.
Entering the known word gets you past the gate, and once you've done that they assume that you also correctly answered the word they don't know. As far as I understand the unknown word is also offered up more than once to validate against multiple responses. The link below is an interesting outline of how some people figured out the known words were being recycled and exploited it.
Yeah - social engineering used to be called grifting. But I guess grifting is not as cool a buzzword as anything associated with engineering. Social engineering, puhleez; like it takes a lot of brains to grift a rube.
I know it costs roughly $80,000 to land an object on the moon, Mars must be a bit more.
Lets say a Hum-V was built that runs perfectly on 100% solar power and weighs about the same as a standard Hum-V, we know it would cost roughly $480,000,000 to lift that Hum-V to the moon. Hard to see how that would be any cheaper...
Microsoft has been playing catch-up with Apple since the day the Apple II launched. The only reason Apple didn't continually trounce Microsoft was due the ouster of Steve Jobs in 1985. Apple's board thought they were the big brains, but as everyone found, it was Steve all along.
The users of Facebook are the product, not the customers. The customers are the advertisers and others who Facebook sells all the data they mine on their users, so the survey should have been polling those who buy data from Facebook, not the human product that uses it.
This is not my original idea by the way, I first heard it from Bruce Schneier and realized he is correct.
Actually no, I am not a sick person. My opinion comes from an in-depth knowledge of child welfare. This kind of thing happens all the time, but in many cases the child ends up dead. The mother is to blame because she chose to be with a loser and criminal, a person of obviously low moral character whose history shows he is capable of anything. Mothers choose to ignore these signs all the time due to putting their needs before the welfare of their children. It is a sad, sad story too often repeated for my taste, so lets put the blame where the blame lies. The man is a scumbag and will be held responsible for his actions which are of his nature, but the mother is 100% responsible for the welfare of her child, thus 100% responsible for the outcome when she puts that child in harms way.
If you don't already have someone on the interview panel who possesses in-depth knowledge of the required skills, then good luck to you sir. I have interviewed candidates for jobs in Information Security with masters' degrees in comp sci who were nothing more than glorified GUI-slingers.
"It seems the trend in scaring the citizens with a made-up problem has gone to the next level."
Yeah no kidding, and you know why? People on Madison Ave. make huge money figuring out ways to sell more useless products to the populace. It has been proven that fear and uncertainty can significantly drive sales. Don't believe me? Google "fear drives sales"
From the article, "Republicans who are college graduates are considerably less likely to accept the scientific consensus on climate change than those who have received less education."
This kind of thing, "You are holding it wrong" is par for the course with Apple and no surprise to a long time user.
Back in the day, circa late 80s and into the 90s, Apple computers were mainly used by artists with little technological experience. As such Apple's customer was essentially beholden to the company because let's face it, what were they going to do, use a PC? These days the Apple customer is vastly different, and though the products are nifty and slick, continuing the arrogance towards the end user may prove counter productive in the long run.
Yeah, they should pay my wife to do it, she's a perfect candidate. One time she asked me if I had, "Turned off the Internet." Sweet as can be but not exactly tech savvy.;-)
Of she would not have helped in this case, she is far to savvy to waste her time with FarmVille.
One of the great Unix sys admins at my last employer decided to quit and go back to hair dressing. Can't say as I totally blame her with all the benefits that go along, you set your hours and rates, define who you will work with and work regular hours for about the same pay in the end.
Just like just about everything else shown in movies and on TV. And to think the media companies still hold to the notion that media is a reflection of society. This phenomenon of amateur storm chasers clearly shows media spurs people to do things they have never done before, whether it be storm chasing (how many storm chasers were there before the movies and tv shows) or murder.
agree with most patents like these, as long as it was awarded I personally would not at all mind seeing some cash rich entity open a can of whup-ass on Zuckerberg, at the very least it would be some form of karmic payback for stealing ( as is alleged) the Facebook idea from the students who hired him to help them. Cheating is one way to win at business, but not at life and I will never applaud a cheat, regardless of apparent success.
will always take advantage of the desperate. 60 Minutes did a piece on this same topic in April about a guy living in the US who scams people the same way, a real upstanding citizen. Kudos to Costa Rica for shutting their clinic down.
Wish I had a mod point cause that is funny. Though I must add, sung in that glorious soulful female background voice from the song I know you know, "If Linux don't get you hot, you ain't been using it."
That is really incredible. Not to say Time Warner is any better than any of the others, but I was having a recurring data network problem that was no fault of my own, and had a hard time convincing the trained monkeys in customer service of the facts. I finally became so fed up with the run-around I emailed the CEO. The response was terrific, people were really jumping to fix my problem, I was very impressed. Sorry to see AT&T choose an alternative route for legitimate complaint resolution.
And there are thousands of other examples...
And yeah, maybe only Paul Hogan referred to prawns as shrimp, but that's how we do it in the greatest nation on earth.
Ay mate, have another tube o' Fosters - my original comment was funny.
as local TV currently runs very little news about local events, politics, etc., only celebrities and murder, so the results of this include an out of control county and city council. So the faster they dry up the better in my opinion because they are not really providing any service to the public.

Ah sorry, amend my previous figure of $80,000 above to $80,000/pound..

Er, what is the point? Oh that's right - everyone *reads* Playboy for the humor and interesting articles... (rolls eyes)

The mother is 100% to blame, from the story.
"Cesmat, who has a sizable criminal history,"
No caring mother would put their kid in harms way, good to see the child can take care of business, she should have gouged the a**holes eyes out.

All I can say is, "Dang."

the incompetent can be easily caught. Perhaps these were even decoys for the competent operation still running.

eh Auzzie? Oi! Oi! Oi!
Not quite a complete solution, NoScript in itself is incapable of blocking sites you desire blocked 100% of the time.
/. and you will see what I mean.
You also need the RequestPolicy add-on. Give it a try on
