Just how does a verbal quote have a spelling error in the first place (assuming the person wasn't spelling words out)?

    "nukular"

My wife's HP Pavillion came with Vista, I *upgraded* to XP and things were going along swimmingly for quite some time. One day the wireless adaptor decides to die. I spent several hours finding the correct driver (getting the most assistance from a site that told me how to install Linux on the machine..heh) and got it back up and running again. It died again a few weeks later, and nothing I did would bring that POS back to life. So we took it to the HP service center, they called us a couple of days later saying it was ready to go. Bring it back home and it worked for a couple of days. Died again. So I decided to bite the bullet and reinstall Vista from the HP system restore disc. Still no joy. Tried downloading all the recommended drivers for the Broadcom wireless adaptor and nothing. So it's back to the service center. Hours and hours of not being able to find a working driver resulting in her having no internet capability on her computer. Oh Joy!!

The Japanese and Korean corporations learned this lesson the hard way (although the Japanese are still a little reluctant to change their cradle-to-the-grave attitude). Keeping on people who can't perform just because you gave them a job kills your company dead. Deader than dead.

We are extremely lucky here in SK. The government is usually quite forward thinking interms of their internet policies. I'm curious, what are the WiFi systems you are talking about? The only one that I know of is nespot, which I don't use because I think the idea of paying for WiFi access in a country like Korea is ridiculous, especially in Seoul and Busan.

My point is that everyone keeps logs. So whether I host my media on YouTube/picasa or if I host it on my own web server, if the courts find in favour of Viacom, it sets a dangerous precedent with regards to being forced to turn over logs to private companies. What if your ISP is forced to turn over logs to Viacom/MPAA/RIAA/$bogeyman to see who's been accessing your system because they suspect you of infringing copyright?
I do actually have locked albums on Picasa that should only be able to be viewed by people I give permission to. I believe the same capability is available on YouTube, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Oh yes, I could set up a website fairly easily. Of course, hosting services don't keep logs either. Oh, I guess I could run a server out of my house. My ISP, they definitely don't keep logs. Hmmm, maybe I should just run some CAT5 across the Pacific to my family back home in Canada, that way I can know for sure my data stays secure and private.
I know that Google and the rest of the bunch keep logs, but I don't think it's unreasonable to have some expectation of privacy against 3rd parties.

Exactly. I live in South Korea, but I put up videos of my kid so my family back home can see her grow. Lots of my friends have put up home videos, these might or might not contain information that could be used against them in some sort of official position (be it a job interview or perhaps an interview for a visa to work legally in a different country).
This kind of bullshit affects people living in basically any country with even semi-decent internet access (you know there's some kid in a yurt in Mongolia who's willing to wait all night to wtch that one video on youtube).

So yeah, you ordinary person in America: go start a witch hunt, a riot, a protest, a civil war. Go do something to claim back your country from the people who have no soul.
Of course, one wonders how many Viacom employees or their family members have watched Viacom "owned" material on youtube...

My own anecdotal evidence with Apple is that I've had a G3 tower since 1998, which has worked fine since then.
The MacBookPro that I'm typing this on got a CD stuck in the slot-loading drive. I tried to work it loose on my own without much success and since it was still under AppleCare, I took it in and got it back 3 days later. This is in South Korea no less, which is hardly an Apple friendly country (barring iPods which have gained some traction here in the last year or so).

You hear horror stories from every hardware company, so how the parent got modded +3 interesting, I have no idea.
