Just in case anyone wondered, using the spellchecker from spellchecker.mozdev.org has not worked for Win32 nightly builds, Mozilla 1.1 or 1.2b releases since the end of August. The spellcheck.xpi from Netscape 7 may work for these Linux builds but does not work for Win32.

I still argue that there are responsibilities of good citizenship that come with the rights we enjoy as citizens.

Don't get me wrong: I strongly believe in and support the first amendment. But I also believe that you're a coward if you hide behind the First Amendment and don't have the courage stand behind your words.

Yes, the press is free to do all these things ... but that doesn't mean they should. I think what you're complaining about is Press Responsibility. This is part of a much larger problem in the US: Everyone thinks they know what their rights are, especially when they feel these rights are infringed upon. However, nobody wants to own up to the responsibilities that come with these rights. People, organizations and corporations should consider the responsibilities of good citizenship as well as what they perceive to be their rights.

I heard the NPR Morning Edition interview with Richard Clarke this morning. Yes, Clarke encourages "hackers" to take find security holes, but be responsible: after discovering the security hole, notify the government and the manufacturer, but DO NOT tell the world. Clarke argues that he wants the software manufacturer to have time to develop a patch before announcing the vulnerability.

Clarke also said he wants "Computer Security Specialists" to hack and not the people doing it for fun. This ambiguity is the problem: how do you define "Computer Security Specialist"? Most of everything I learned about IT came through hacking for fun. Now I'm employed as a "Computer Security Specialist."

Once the manufacturers stopped complaining, they integrated everything needed to meet the requirement onto a single chip that costs are less than $1 per set. Now the same will be done with digital receivers.

Cell phones have became so common and these calls happen so frequently that it has actually become a problem. To discourage this behavior (unprepared hikers calling 911 to be rescued), the authorities came to a unique solution: Bill the caller for the cost of the rescue.

Let me be clear; not every hiker who calls 911 will be billed. If you have a genuine emergency, please use 911. But if you're stranded due to your own stupidity, you're going to pay.

I specifically remember this event. Continental Cable, the precursor of MediaOne and my cable provider at the time did this very thing in Northwest Connecticut in the early 1990's. There was a Pay Per View boxing match scheduled for a particular night. Since it was a Pay Per View event, the cable company had an exact list of everyone who had officially ordered (and paid for) the event. The cable company sent a special "commercial" for a free T-shirt to everyone tuned to the Pay Per View channel but also sent a signal to the cable boxes of everyone who paid for the program telling their cable boxes not to show the commercial. The result was that dozens of people called the "toll free" number and turned themselves in.

I have two feelings on the subject:

    1. After spending over $1000 (over a number of years) on their product, Continental Cable didn't consider me good customer, but a suspect. How I longed for competition in cable industry.

I logged into my regular user account and all I get is my backgrond screen - no icons, no start menu, etc. I was able to do CTRL-ALT-DELETE to start the task manager and therefore Mozilla, which I'm using now to post this message.

I tried the same method described above to start IE and Windows Explorer. Both failed. I read the TechNet bulletin referred to in other posts. It looks like MS updated the code that support something they're calling a "local resource file". Correct me if I'm worng, but doesn't MS use "local resource files" to handle the desktop in Win2k?

BTW, the only positive outcome is that my memory usage has dropped form 135 MB to about 80 MB. Besides my desktop, among the missing applications are my AntiVirus program and firewall.

Finally, I get the same symptom when I try to use the Administrator account. I don't know how I'm going to back out the patch if I can't run the Control Panel Applet without IE/Windows Explorer.

Any pointers would be appreciated. Good thing I have a Linux box and/or Mozilla to fall back on.
