Acctually we had a guy come round and speak to us from weta (I'm doing a multimedia course). And If i remeber correctly, that they are using, or going to use, Maya (one og the biggest 3d progs), on linux. I think if you even go to www.maya.com, there will be something bit about it. (i think it runs on redhat or something). So they arn't just using linux for rendering.
Hmmm... I wouldn't say that at all.. I think that you will find all the gadgets dissapering, The will all start to be combined... like cellphones, PDA, and portable music devices are today.
Also... I doubt that we'll see the end of the PC anytime soon. Sure.. u might beab;r to send ur e-mail from ur small device... but there are lots of people out there who will always need the most powerfull, and biggest computer. 3D modeling comes to mind... and 100's of others...
I predict in 10 years time.. All I will jave wil be a thin desktop computer (wich will have my TV and stereo aswell). And a small portable device, which will be able to do alot of the things the desktop could. Who knows... maybe i could just plug this futuristic PDA into a dock type thing... and just have the one PC.
Anyway... y would i want to carry a PDA, a cellphme, an MP3 player, when I could just carry the one.. maybe this end of the anything box is true 4 some peole... it's the total oposite 4 others

Hey!! I have a calculator watch too!!
Funny thing is.. I acctually used mine all the time (b4 i got my Vx).
Maybe you or ur friend got urs to be "cool" but I got mine to use.
And if it's one thing for sure... I certainly didn't get it to look important.
I think the only people who really need to get a life are people who sit around and complain about something, telling eveyone that something sucks, when, infact, they forget that not everyone things like them, or has the same needs as them.
The thing about the tobacco companies is that years ago, they didn't tell anyone it was an adictive substance, and they clamied that it was heathy... when it wasn't. That's why they are being sued -- not for people who begin to smoke today, who have the "choice" to begin smokeing. But those other people who begun smoking not knowing it was addictive. Personaly... I think they shoul be sued to the ground. Cause they know, that they still just want to get people addicted to get there money.
Guns and napster on the other hand... is a differnt story. Although I don't like guns -- it isn't totaly the gun-makers fault... maybe in some cases when they might have neglegted a safter issue (rare i think). But it was the person who pulled the trigger... who had the intent to kill. Same goes with napster.
Although it could be argueed either way because both the gun-makers, and napster etc.. knew what they where going to be used for.
Well... that's my NZ$0.04 (have to take into account the exchange rate these days).
A keyborad might seem more complicated, but really. It's alot simpler than pen reconition.
I like the fact the Apple are tring some really different things. But sometimse they take the wrong way. I think a hand writing recognition system on a laptop, with no proper keyboard alternative, would be a bad idea. I think the main reason hand writing recognition systems where made was an alturnative to a keyboard when there was not space for one (like a PDA).
Also, I don't think PDA's are becomming more like laptops. Sure, some are. But a hell of alot are starting to look like cellphones to.
I'm a little dissapointed with the interface. If they really wanted to WOW me. They would have an interface like like PalmOS, but with some of the fucntionality of WinCE. Eg I really miss being able to set differnt ring tones for each ring. Little tings like than, that can really make the the PDA a lot more cutomizable, anf therefore. more usefull.
Just by looking at it. It dosn't seem to make use of the screen space very well. Like the address bar in the browser has a rather large border round it. etc..
Oh well, maybe one day someone will mix the best of the 2 together, instead of acting like advocates when they're designing.
Hmmm... But then i think you would need a very powerfull pump to stop the 4000tons/sec of water of flowing in the outlet, and an even more power full one to acctually push air out. Plus the redirecting some of the exaust to the from would probably slow it down, if enough where pumped out to make a differerence. I think I would probably just be easier to make it go faster in the first place. But then again. I'm no rocket scientist... of a submarine engineere for that matter... So I'm just guessing.
probably requres far too much energy.. more than a rocket maybe. Some said b4 that it would dissplace 4300 tons of water per second... Thats alot of water to heat to boiling point especialy if you want to vaporise it instantly. I certainly wouldn't like to be inside it.
I think since the density of air is alot less, it would take a much bigger area to defect the air and cause a bubble. probably so big that it would be able to fly.
No. These are the same kind of people who make nuclear weapons (US and Russia). Killing some wild marine life is nothing to them when u consider that they don't care if the wipe out the entire planet's ecological system.
1) Look at the size of the graffiti area 2) Look at the size of your finger
I know that the keyboard will be bigger than that. But there is also(?) a version for the stylus, To optuize the keyboard for 2 fingers etc.. that would mean another layout.
I'm sorry. But you can't tell me which one is better. I have used apple's puck mouse. And I find my normal, 2 button scroll mouse far more comfortable to use, and far more functional (especially the scroll button).
Johnny Ive realized this when he designed a mouse that one CAN'T rest one's hand on. It's so small and light that the CORRECT way to use it, motherfucker, is to lightly and gently guide it with only the tips of three fingers. A subtle yet significant benefit of such think-different mouseholding is that it's more like holding a pencil. I can draw in Photoshop or Illustrator more naturally -- guiding the cursor not with my palm-heel but with my index finger. Manipulating the mouse with one's palm-heel now seems incredibly primitive -- like trying to eat soup with one's ass.
Thats funny... I hold both the puck mouse and the normal mouse with 4 fingers, And I still rest my palm in the pad with both mice. The only thing is, that I find the puck mouse hard to use in photoshop -- I twist my mouse when I draw curves. And I lose my orientaion with the round shape.
Your right. If it wasn't about penguins...who cares? But is is about penguins. And penguins being the mascot of linux. And linux being a major topic, I think it does have a bit of relivance.
And refering to your comment about geese. Of course it wouldn't make it on slashdot. But it wasn't about geese now was it, it was about penguins.
Just calm down a bit... There is no need to waste screen space with comments like this. Get over it. Eveyone knows that articals on/. aren't always about tech/nerd stuff, And I thing thats good thing.
If you think the artical is redundant/boring/whatever, all you have to do is not read it. And let eveyone else enjoy themselves.
Obsolete? I think not. Not for me anyway. I have 8 gigs of mp3z, And if I wanted all my music one one device (which would perfect). Then I would need 80+ gigs to do the same with wave files. Anyway. I can't see the average person telling the difference to a wave file and a high quality VBR mp3 on a set of portable type headphones.
Still, if it has a fast write speed, It could deffinitly be an alturnative to compact flash. Pretty soon.
I think people are going to able to store every bit of data they have on a small device like this, and carry it around with them, That would be handy. If your bored.. pull out ur drive and listen to a choice of over 2000 mp3z, or whach you favorite movie with some other device.
I have to say that this sounds great. I've used digital camers before. And the one thing I found was a pain what the limited/expensive storage, and the fact that you had to use the camers software to download the images (which can take ages). Abd even if I had a CF slot for my PC, It still would have been anoying, escpecialy when you hace to walk/drive all the way back to download them (not everyone carries a laptop with them). Also, It's like having a backup already made 4 u. And the fact that it can also write uncommpressed tiff's is big + 4 me, becasue quite a few times, i've wanted to edit image in photoshop etc... but the commpression can show up and spoil the whole photo.
I spose there are a few downside though, bigger, more battery power etc... But depending on what your using it for, It might not matter.
You every try convincing a cybercafe that you want to install some software and mess with the cables on the computer? Try explaining it to them when they hardly speak english:)
I have to disagree. I've used adobe photoshop on the mac, corel photopaint on win, and GIMP on linux. GIMP is behind in alot of areas compare to the former 2. Of course, if you want something for Linux, I imagine corel photopaint would be the best -- if it's anything like the Win version.
The Gimp itself doesn't support editing in CMYK. It does, however, support printing in CMYK, and 6 and 7 color printers (CcMmYyK). The development version of the print plugin (which I am project lead for) supports the latest Epson Stylus printers, including the Photo 870 and 1270, and produces print quality comparable to Windows (many people think that in certain ways the print quality is better, although the smoothness still has a ways to go).
I think when he say 6 color printing. He means proper 6 color printing for prepress/prodution at a proper printing place. Which means having multichannel images (say, the normal C,M,Y,K, and maybe 2 pantone spot colors). Not the fixed colors in inkjet printers. I think that you'll find that the driver for the printer does most of the conversion work 2.
Also, if you are working on an image for output, then you should always work in CMYK, 'cause when it's converted to CMYK, it will most likly change color a bit.
I just had a look at it on my jornada 680. It dose, to me, make a big difference. The most noticeable letters are ones like 1, f, v, or any thing else that is just slightly wider that 1 pixel. On the anti-aliasing verion, and about 10-12pt, these letters look very blury. But with the cleartype. they look alot better.
I think I make it much easier to read anyhow.
Something else of interest, the jornada 545 (the 12bit one that was supposed to be 16bit), ff I remember properly, has the lines horizontaly (imagine a normal LCD rotated 90 degrees).
I think they might be using something like cleartype, but instead of sub-pixeling the pixels next to each other, they sub-pixel the pixels on top/underneath each other. Which would improve serifed fonts like Times alot. The usaly thin serifs help guite the eye along the line, but on computer screens, they are too big and acctually make it more difficult to read.
But if MS does keep it to them selves, I spose someone could make a GPLed version. MS would have a hard time sueing I imagine. Anyone knows who first came up with anti-aliasing? Was it patanted?
Also... I doubt that we'll see the end of the PC anytime soon. Sure.. u might beab;r to send ur e-mail from ur small device... but there are lots of people out there who will always need the most powerfull, and biggest computer. 3D modeling comes to mind... and 100's of others...

Which is really easier?
1. Writing the letter "a", and doing it properly.
2. Or hitting a button marked "a".
A keyborad might seem more complicated, but really. It's alot simpler than pen reconition.

Question is: Do they care?
No. These are the same kind of people who make nuclear weapons (US and Russia). Killing some wild marine life is nothing to them when u consider that they don't care if the wipe out the entire planet's ecological system.
So does that mean I can put a trademark on the work Jesus Christ? And sue anyone who has a domain like it? Or sue any churches?
I'ts not as bad st that, but it's still the same principle.

Who ever they were, they obviously had some negitive feelings towards the birds.

I personaly am not scared of anything thank you very much. I'm just a a bit sick of the GIF, it's old technology. And MNG seems a whole lot better.
Also, It's like having a backup already made 4 u. And the fact that it can also write uncommpressed tiff's is big + 4 me, becasue quite a few times, i've wanted to edit image in photoshop etc... but the commpression can show up and spoil the whole photo.
