  1. Re:Prepaid phones. on Mexican Government To Document Cell Phone Use · · Score: 1

All mobile companies in Mexico offer pre-paid phones. I know more people with pre-paid phones than in a monthly plan, i believe that's why they want to do this as many calls for extorsion or kidnapping are from unregistered phones. From what i have read, they are linking the info with the real CURP database, so info needs to match, but then it is not really hard to get this info. I mean, if you have like birthday and names form a person, you can look up on the internet (government site) the CURP or even legally generate it (no joking).

Banorte (a bank in Mexico) issues a "token" from RSA which generates a new number every minute, it is synchronized with your bank account so you can say its "unique" and you need to type it with the password you know for every transaction you do (for example, "passwordNUMBER") and of course is one time use. It would be awesome if they could give you a certificate for the whole connection, it would be more secure against someone modifying the transaction live.

I know this is not a fault from Linux itself but the companies not supporting it, but sometimes you have hardware (ie. X-Fi sound card, some new wireless card), all the good integration and stability ubuntu have with supported hardwares goes out of the window. Lately, i don't feel comfortable using my PC as flash crashes a lot, sometimes mplayer or other media player freezes and i know it is the soundcard drivers. But to tell you the truth, with the gaming i do, there is one less reason to boot in Ubuntu. I have been thinking in getting a laptop from Apple just for work because all hardware is support out of the box and then i will just boot to Linux to play around. Don't get me wrong, i have been using Linux for about 15 years (started with Slackware) but the less free time i have, the less time i have to fiddle with hardware and software issues, i just want to boot up and work or entertain myself and so far, Linux is not giving me that. I need a laptop or PC certified to work on Linux to switch again.

  13. Re:Is it that much of a deal? on Japan IDs All Its Citizens · · Score: 1

In Mexico we have CURP (Clave Única de Registro de Población) which is a string composed by your name and last names, sex, birth date, place where you born and 2 extra digits to avoid duplicates.
Since a few years ago this ID is created when you register a born child and for everyone else you can request it. Most paperwork today will require it (paying taxes, getting a passport, etc.)
We also have our ID (with picture), widely accepted but the intention of this ID card was for voting purposes. I really don't see a problem with requires this ID to get an official document, opening a bank account, etc. I can see the implication about discrimination, for example, someone who changed sex and look at their ID where it says Male (instead of Female) or viceversa, but then again, this will be discrimination and it's not violating your privacy, maybe you want to keep your sex, age or birth place hide but then you will lie when disclosing this data.

Privacy comes in laws where they prohibit for example bank institutions to disclose your personal info, where a citizen can't access the database containing personal info, punishing discrimination to people who changed sex and so on. That's what you need to fight for, but not to avoid government to ID their citizens.

I know "privacy" can avoid discrimination but that's now how it should work, people shouldn't discriminate from the start.

It's the same it happened to movies. With the boom on digital effects they started pushing the movies to be heavy on effects but no good storyline. People went to the movies just to see how "good" were the effects, you know, "it looks great but kinda boring" movie. Now that we reached the point that most studios can afford them, people are starting to realize the crappy content and now moves to independent movies or low budget films. I believe this is going to happen (or already it is) in console world. Once people have enough of pretty graphics and look for awesome gameplay, they game developers will have to adjust. I mean, check for example Xbox Live Arcade, Virtual Console, etc., they offer old games which many play for the nostalgia, on the other hand, young people also realize there is so much fun in old games and they don't need great graphics for it.
