If you try to sort by the first column for example (#), in Firefox it just stops responding and CPU is at 100%. This happens in Windows and Linux.
If i use Chrome, it takes maybe 2-3 seconds to sort everything? Even using the development snapshot in Linux for Chrome, just works, fast. So it is not the OS but the implementation in the JavaScript engine. I clearly see the improvement in other sites using AJAX and the like.
This sort of course is using JavaScript. And i doubt it is performance issues as i use an AMD Phenom II X4 955 which is a Quad-Core running at 3.2ghz and 4gb RAM. I really think that is ENOUGH processing power to sort around 2000 rows in a table.
I prefer the features from Firefox, but sometimes there are pages a little heavy with JavaScript and Firefox just can't keep up.
For example there are some web applications like the WoW armory which is better in Chrome. Also in Ubuntu when using Firefox and the new feature from Gmail called "Task List" or when having chat windows open, it is really slow, CPU almost at 100% and if you mousewheel, well totally laggy. On the other hand, using Chrome in Linux (unstable) is really fast. You can say is because Chrome+Gmail should work together but again this is an example as it happens in every page using a lot of Javascript like Slashdot.
meh, they can do that like in the movies. Drink coke, Pepsi or whatever. Use branded jeans, branded cars. They don't need to be invasive like "Wait 10 seconds while you watch an Ad which cant be skipped"
The Evony chick?
Dear god, in every damn page i only get that ad across several websites. Must be my location. (Japan)

Well, a few years ago a weird trend started in Mexico where everyone using an internet chat started misspelling words like:
"Como estas" as "Komo estas" or "te quiero" with "te kiero". Practically, if you go right now to a Chat room (IRC, web page) you can see what i am talking about.
Why this happens? No clue, but i think this is worst that shortening words for SMS, at least there you have a reason to short or misspell words.
Well i think the improvement on Japanese search results is because Yahoo is HUGE in Japan, number #1 search engine and offers a lot of useful services for PC and mobile users.
I think Google is pushing harder to be #1 in Japan so we should see improvements in the near future.
Agreed.
I actually had to rip some songs a long while ago using Tunebite so i could play them in my cell phone (mp3 player, no itunes support). Then they released the itunes format, i had to pay about 30 cents for the non-drm and mostly all new music is non-drm, works perfectly.
The experience is better now.
Like i said, if the BIOS reports 4gb memory you should be able to see 4gb in the OS. In my case i get 4gb in the BIOS and only 3.2gb in Vista. If my BIOS had memory remapping i could enable it and see 4gb and use it. So i had to install the 64-bit version to do this.
From Microsoft:
For Windows Vista to use all 4 GB of memory on a computer that has 4 GB of memory installed, the computer must meet the following requirements:
...
The BIOS must support the memory remapping feature. The memory remapping feature allows for the segment of system memory that was previously overwritten by the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) configuration space to be remapped above the 4 GB address line. This feature must be enabled in the BIOS configuration utility on the computer. View your computer product documentation for instructions that explain how to enable this feature. Many consumer-oriented computers may not support the memory remapping feature. No standard terminology is used in documentation or in BIOS configuration utilities for this feature. Therefore, you may have to read the descriptions of the various BIOS configuration settings that are available to determine whether any of the settings enable the memory remapping feature.
Yes, if you don't enable memory remapping, Windows 7 just see about 3.2-3.7gb (depends on what you have hooked up, bios, etc.) but a 32-bit OS should be able to see the whole 4gb.
I have tested in Windows Vista 32-bit with Memory Remapping and you actually see the 4gb. But truth is, this could lead to other problems as it depends on how the manufacturer implements the remapping.
To be honest, switching to 64-bit edition is better.
Here is a screenshot from Vista 32bit and 4gb of ram.
I just had to switch to Windows 7 64-bit in my new computer as i couldn't use all my memory (4gb) and my BIOS doesn't support memory remapping which sometimes fixes the problem.
I tend to agree there are some incompatibility (trying to find out a 64-bit AV which actually works, maybe Kaspersky beta) but then, i think any new desktop processor supports 64-bit and with Windows 7 you can run 32-bit applications in compatibility mode.
I am pretty sure this year we are going to see a lot of releases from companies for Windows 7 64-bit.
As a person who used to live in Mexico and now in Japan, i have always encountered these kind of problems and don't get your hopes up, so far i have never EVER seen a service to be available again outside from USA, so that's message could be translated as "Access denied."
It sucks as USA have very cool online services which doesn't have counterparts locally.
It actually seems to be a good reflection of the current stability of the internet
That reminds me the last time i tried to use my cellphone to call my relatives after an earthquake, impossible, it was only 2 years ago or so.
We will see (hopefully not) when something really bad happens how the net behaves. Probably like in 9/11, we will only get text news pages. What i am worried is twitter, probably won't make it and if they did, who knows the kind of misinformation it will deliver to people... not that actual news are 100% accurate either...
*sigh*
I don't know, when i see a story about handling a lot of money and open source i just can think it's probably because they prefer to have people auditing the code for "free" and fix them quickly. Something that is really hard to achieve with proprietary software as they sometimes go with security through obscurity or take a while to deploy patches.
Can i ask the distribution and FireFox version?
I have tried in 8.04, 8.10 and 9.04, same problems on different computers. Everything using the Firefox version from the distro (stable one).
Same on Windows, have tried in Windows XP and 7, different computers and Firefox 3.0 and 3.5, asme problems.
I must be doing something wrong.
FireFox have like serious issues when dealing with JavaScript. I use it in Windows and Linux, just awful for some stuff i use.
For example, try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_j%C5%8Dy%C5%8D_kanji

Not true. In the subway you lose the signal between stations.

What if i want to host a p0rn site called "Bankmehard" ? wow, burning some Karma there.
I agree but to add some balance (i think) it should cost you materials.
I don't know you but i prefer low latency than tons of bandwidth anytime for multiplayer.

What about XvbA from AMD?
Also, this ATI is close to release it a seen here.
Of course is not perfect yet and they have been pushing the release date but still, i don't see right now a big gap between NVIDIA and ATI.
Still unconfirmed, someone from Sega said "no localization" but took it back, who knows really.

You are right, you need Windows Vista 64-bit to actually use the 4GB of ram you need. Just for the kicks, take a look at this too -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Address_Extension
