  1. Some comments on the new look: on The Next Firefox UI · · Score: 1

    1) What happened to the forward button? I understand it's not used much, but it doesn't take up that much space, does it? As long as you can do the same functionality by holding down the back button like usual, then I should be fine. Not sure how discoverable that feature is, though...

    2) I like the new tab style a lot, even if they don't really look like "tabs" as much as before, it's still an improvement to me. It really makes it look like the tab owns the browser chrome, good for usability purposes. This is probably the best tabs-on-top design I've seen in a while.

    3) Home tab! Finally!

    4) I like the new menu as well. It would work better on non-standardized platforms like GNU/Linux, and it looks pretty customizable. A much better solution than the current Firefox menu and Add-on bar usability wise; I happen to like "mega menus" if they're done correctly, and the old menu from FF 4/5 was hard to navigate when helping people with the browser. This, not nearly as challenging.

    5) The full-screen UI looks pretty nice as well; space-saving while having all the features you really need.

I'm really looking forward to this new UI change. Sure, it's inconsistent with other applications, but if it makes the program more simple to use for a majority of users (while still maintaining the ability to customize), I think it's for the better. Can anybody think of some more pros/cons about this that aren't "it's too different", "bring back the status bar", or "I hate tabs on top"?

    3) Of course not as many people own DSes as people own smartphones and things like that; they're less necessary of an item. They're just for entertainment. That said, I can't think of a kid I've met that doesn't have one AND doesn't want one, but that's not really a good statistic at all.

Chill, the system came out four months ago! It supports 100% backwards compatibility with DS and DSi titles (even downloadable ones), which is something the Vita doesn't have (only downloadable titles supported), so even if you can't find anything for the 3DS, there's hundreds of regular DS games to play. Also, there's Street Fighter IV, OoT, Star Fox 64, another Mario Kart coming out, Luigi's Mansion 2's coming out, Kid Icarus, Dead or Alive, BlazBlue, I could go on. Just go on GameRankings or Metacritic and look up some good 3DS games and I'm sure you'll find quite a few.

It's a little early to say the system has "failed" when it just came out, and it's a little harsh to say there's no games when you get new downloadable titles every single Thursday and there are several good-scoring titles out right now for it.

The 3D effect is great when it doesn't bother your eyes, and it really makes a difference in games that benefit from the added depth perception (a lot more than you'd think). You can turn the 3D off in parental controls as well. Also, I don't know too many people under the age of 6 that play anything more than Mario/Sonic, and I highly doubt they'd play nearly as often as older kids anyways. Nintendo has ALWAYS had health warnings about their games and talked about them much more than the other companies; that doesn't stop parents.

Wow, what an important feature. The GNOME (and KDE) devs should stop adding features like on-screen-keyboard support in GNOME Shell, truly rounded window corners, and complete chat integration in the shell to focus on what's obviously more important: an option to change the root cursor color.

Does it really matter that much? On a scale of "Pointless" to "Absolutely necessary", it ranks just below "It'd be nice to have". Of all the features users and developers really want, it's pretty low on most peoples' lists.

The main difference between PSN and Xbox Live is that one is free and the other isn't. With PSN, new game sales help fund the PSN network, while Xbox users fund their network with subscriptions. If people only buy used games, they are in fact hurting the network they use. With these PSN Passes, you need to make a contribution before you can play a used game online and that feels fair to me. With Xbox Live, it wouldn't be fair at all though.

  10. Not what it sounds like on Sony Introduces 'PSN Pass' To Fight Used Game Sales · · Score: 1

I hate DRM as much as the next guy, I love the first-sale doctrine, and I'm saying this as a free culture junkie: this is perfectly fine.

All this does is limit ONLINE access for CERTAIN games (so mainly offline games won't be affected) to the original purchaser. If you buy used, you have to buy a license to play online. This is how it has been done for YEARS on PCs and nobody over there seems to have a problem with it. Heck, the games themselves are relatively DRM-free (just back up the ISO and you're good), and they can't provide online gaming for free you know. Every little cent helps the service be better than otherwise and I, as a gamer, appreciate that.

This increases the incentive to purchase new, while still allowing you to purchase used if you always have been. This is NOT limiting the ability of the games to be sold used; you can still buy them used and they will work just fine. You will just have to support the network developers with a contribution if you do; isn't that fair? You don't have the right to play online in any game you want for free. You do have the rights to resell and backup games though, and that isn't being tampered with whatsoever.

Aside from not supporting blocking contacts on every protocol that Pidgin does (I think it only supports one or two protocols right now for that), it does just enough for me and it feels easier to use than Pidgin, in addition to having great GNOME 3 integration. As far as Ubuntu goes, they'd be better off using Pidgin, but every other distro, as in the GNOME 3 using ones, are much better off with Empathy in the long run. 15. Re:Lost touch on Nintendo Trying To Win Back Core Gamers With Wii U · · Score: 1

I thought the Gamecube was pretty hardcore. Viewtiful Joe, a ton of Resident Evil, Fire Emblem, Baten Kaitos, and you can't forget the great console exclusives like Mario/Zelda/Metroid/Pikmin/F-Zero, many of those are still some of Nintendo's best games to this day (especially Metroid Prime which is one of the best reviewed games of all time). It didn't have quite as much third-party support as other consoles, but it had several amazing hardcore titles and I really loved my Gamecube. I've only just recently gotten a PS2 and it feels like I'm not missing out on too much. The main reason that the Wii isn't considered "hardcore" by other gamers is because it's graphics technology is outdated right now (with Wii U that's expected to change greatly). Seriously, look at the PS3/360: many of the best games for those consoles are dual-platform titles. Either you make a game for the 360, PS3, both, or just the Wii by itself; porting is impossible at this point.

I did a little research on this topic on my blog a while back and what I found was rather shocking: the PS3 and 360 have many more "great" games than the Wii does. I can only assume that the main reasons that is so is because of:

    1) The "casual" stereotype that people have about the Wii, which is somewhat false.

    2) Lack of proper graphics technology to do ports of the more recent games.

That said, the Wii has several hardcore titles (2010 was a great year for those): Donkey Kong Country Returns, Metroid Prime 3/Trilogy/Other M, Zelda Twilight Princess/Skyward Sword, Monster Hunter Tri, both Super Mario Galaxy games (trust me; these are hardcore games), Xenoblade, Last Story (which probably won't see an American release, sadly), Okami (a PS2 port), Trauma Center/New Blood/Trauma Team, Zack & Wiki... I could go on. I for one think that the Wii U, being able to support porting more easily, will get it a much more varied library than the Wii has (especially its depressing lack of RPGs) and I'm very excited for that. Either way, as long it has Zelda and Metroid, I'll buy it ;)

    1) Capcom "announced" the game a long time ago. People found out that you could not delete the save file on their own.

    2) Why the heck would you ever want to start over, even if you were buying used? The game has NO single player campaign, NO major unlockables, and it's a game where you play missions over and over to get a high score, like an arcade game. The game design itself has absolutely no need whatsoever for the option to delete save files. In Zelda, of course I want to delete saves. In a fighting game with unlockable fighters, sure. In this, which is just playing missions over and over and over to get high scores? Of course not! The only possibly situation I can think of when this would be a good thing is if you hacked the game to give yourself perfect scores in all of the missions and wanted to get rid of those. Even if you buy the game used, you'll still have scores to beat that aren't yours; starting from fresh, in that case, would be boring.

Geez, you people act like you've never played a game without this feature before. I've played quite a few over the years and, depending on the game design, I don't care at all.

Way to decide what I want for me. There are people in this world who like change sometimes, especially if, in the long run, it's for the better. Just because it's "different" doesn't mean it's bad (though that doesn't mean different is good either but that's another matter). Sometimes UI shifts are a good thing. If they felt the same for years at a time, there would be little-to-no innovation in the world of GUI design, and different concepts have to be tried. I, frankly, really like Firefox 4's UI for the most part. If you don't like it, that's your opinion, but don't act like it's fact please.

It groups the buttons on the address bar with the tab, so you can display different information on each page (or no information at all, like with about:addons). It's not just a toe-may-toe toe-mah-toe difference, there are some usability concerns that make it simpler to grasp for some people (and by some people, I don't mean people who are already used to web browsers).
