I love Legos I had them as a kid a big 5 gallon bucket full of bricks of all types though thinking back on it I bet the total number of unique bricks (discounting color we're talking shape) was small, maybe 50 including the tires and stuff. Now you can buy a 200 piece set and you might get 50 different pieces in that one set. But that aside here's why Lego failed with me.

    Price

I go to and I see Lego sets priced roughly 2 to nearly 3 times as much as the competition. When I went Xmas shopping for my kid I bought him an assload of "legos" but they were Mega Bloks, the BIG sets of Mega Bloks are around $50 and we're talking aircraft carrier/detailed clipper ship big. And the little sets (65-80 pieces) ran like $3 each, the mid sized sets (500-800 pieces) ran in the $20 range. Legos was more like $8 and $50 and when I got ready to spend my money I spent it on Mega Bloks.

    Two examples:

    772 Piece Lego Truck $59.99

635 Piece Mega Bloks Ship $15.99

I spent Xmas morning building the models for my kid (he's only 3 but he's learning) and he spent the morning tearing them up :) I put them all in a big rubbermaid tub and we spill them into the floor and play with them together.

Also bought him K'nex god those are cool, wish I had those as a kid.

On the other hand the fact you CAN find legit music online is probably helping somewhat too. Though $1 a song is still a little bit on what I'd consider the "kinda expensive" side of things, when it hits $.30-.40 per song I might even start using a service like that myself.

"suspected of videotaping a movie" someone with a digital camera or whatever taking pictures of their friends having a good time is hardly "videotaping a movie" and no theatre owner/security guard in their right mind is gonna bother someone doing this.

I mean I still think this is a silly law, and redundant on many levels but I still say, it doesn't really affect anyone because it's just well, silly and redundant and no one should be recording a movie while watching it in a theatre anyway.

I mean it's not like they made it illegal to go watch a movie and tell your friends the plot and ending (though in some cases I almost wish that were illegal!).

Though I wish they'd waste their time more productively but how is illegalizing (is that even a word) something most anyone with a brain would already realize was not something you'd want to do anyway all that big of a deal?

My 3 year old has a $39 AMW DVD player in his room, it plays dvd's on the 8 year old 27 inch tv I put in there (well 8 years ago I bought it used from a pawn shop, no clue how old it really is) and well, that's about it, if he slides a piece of cheese in there I'm not gonna get pissed about it and he doesn't need optical outputs or S Video or composite or progressive scan or none of that jazz, he wants to see Nemo in bright orange and Spongbob in yellow and he's happy as a clam. Down in the living room it's a Panasonic progressive scan with all the trimmings on a 57" Hitachi wide screem, neither of which are the cheapest (or most expensive) in their class.

My wife's car is a nice mini van with high safety ratings leather seats, blah blah blah. She does a lot of running around and my kid is in there a lot as well, safety is a huge issue and I want them safe in a newish car that isn't likely to break down. My car is a 1997 Geo Tracker beer can on wheels, I put about 3K miles on it per year, I don't NEED a good car, I need a pos I can run to Staples in when I need some blank DVD's. If it breaks down I park it on the side of the road and call my wife on my cell to come get me.

Do I or you need to be told that "cheap stuff tends to be cheap" and furthermore do I need to be told that "working conditions in China aren't good" and that "WalMart doesn't pay employees much"? Sheesh man use a little common sense, this is why #1 I only buy the cheap shit when I have a reason for buying it (as in letting a 3 year old watch DVD's in his room) #2 I am glad I don't live in China, and #3 I'm glad I don't work at WalMart.

Still the part about the name brands and the off brands going down the same assembly line surprised me, oh wait, no it didn't, how many rebadged Lite-On CD's and BTC's marked as Creative or other "big name" brand does one need to see to realize it's often the same cheap shit under the hood?

At home I refuse to have the computers across the house, it's hard enough to get family time as it is without having junior huddled in his bedroom and me in the basement/etc so we put all the PC's in one room along with the TV and entertainment system, we call it the family room and it's where we spend most of our time, this way if my son is watching Nemo for the 113th time and I'm doing whatever on the PC we're still in the same room and I can also watch over my shoulder the TV and comment on his favorite parts.

Once he gets old enough to go from Finding Nemo to something a little racier we'll put a PC in his room probably, teenagers do need some privacy but not a 3 year old.

Every now and then we'll wake up to find one or more of our servers blocked by aol, you can test it quickly by telnetting to port 25 on one of their MX's and it'll tell you right away if you're blocked.

Call, stay on hold 45 minutes, and you get "white listed" for 30 days and they ask you to setup a special email to send you spam complaints to if that IP becomes a problem again in the future. Sounds good right? I mean we host nearly 13,000 web sites for over 6000 customers, we DO get some spam sent through us once in a while (open formmail.php is the worst) and we handle it the second it's noticed.

HOWEVER we have YET to recieve ONE, and I mean that as in a SINGLE complaint from AOL for ANY of our ips. Yet 7 times now we've been blocked. Luckily it hasn't happened in a few weeks.

Do you know how annoying it is when 13,000 web sites become unable to talk to aol? Jesus christ.

Here's the funny part, often times it's only 1 or 2 of the (best I can tell) 4 main MX servers blocking us, so much for keeping those in sync.

I applaud them for trying to curb the incoming spam but goddamnit make it POSSIBLE to work with and if you block someone TELL THEM WHY and maybe a little warning please! If I'm notified of a problem I'll GLADLY nuke the spammers ass, or if it's just an open script, we can help the customer secure it, but if we're not informed what can we do? At least spamcop sends us emails with headers of the spam so we can take care of it.

So I gotta wonder how many of that half trillion is REALLY spam and how much is erroneous blocking.
