I understand that many people say that Sun is doing nothing wrong, and that if we jump on them then DeCSS is also illegal... But it's a different issue here... DVDs were intended to be kept secreat, but the linux source was always open source.... I think Sun should relase the source, what do they really have to loose? And there is a world to gain!
I won't even say what a moron you are. Sure I might not be able to spell good, but I still know that what Napster does it 100% then what Sun is doing.
Napster doesn't actually handle or supply anything execpt the service, people are the ones who make it illegal. Then again Sun is just illegal and should be held responsible for what they supplied.
I never thought that Sun and the FCC could just piss me off in the same day. Gee who thought of that? When I woke up this morning if someone had told me that Sun would blantly violate the GPL I would have said "maybe possible". Then the stinkin FCC wants to come piss me off as well...
The US government is trying to get back at it's citizens for the who Napster issue, and other copyright issues and stuff like DVDs. So they decide to put copy protection on the airwaves... I just know that I'll have a VCR that somehow bypasses this new protection. People need to protest this, and then when it goes through then buy the illegal devices that work around it.
I agree with you on the most part. I have seen cruddy programs who graduate CS with honors and off to go get a programming job. Crap, I'm a System Admin. I hate programming and I could do a better job they they could with my eyes shut. But at my College 2 of the 6 programming teachers are really dang tuff. He will give you a problem and you have to figure out how to code it. he gives us problems from Programming Contests. Problem solving and generating good and wierd ideas is what we have to do... i think that good teachers in the Colleges makes all the difference.
I'll start off on this. I hate Bill Gates, but the quote that you put in was great. Well, I'm a UNIX sys.admin, that says it all. But I want to be experienced in business and a good writer. I have just re enrolled in school after a year of working in the.com's. Many of the IT people I worked with did not even attempt going to college. And some of that was evident in the way they went about problems, and the conclusions they drew fomr thngs. And I know in some of my CS classes we get hard programs to write that take a lot of thought. While I hate programming I do have to say that it has taught me to start thinking different, and that has really paid off. Right now I am starting my 3rd year of college, and no i didn't go back to colege because I wasen't getting paid enough, I was getting paid plenty. But I saw the improvemenets made in the first 2 years of college, now i wonder what the last 2 years will do...
think about the 30% improvment your getting one 1 program... that may not be a lot to you, but then you have that 30% improvment on your Kernel, the X server, the WindowManager and the app your running. Overall thats a 120% improvment. now i'll take that anyday!
not really...
Storm is exactally like Debian, it looks like some kid's Debian box all packaged up with an installer. But Mandrake is years ahaid of RedHat in the desktop market. I would recomend Mandrake to anyone new to Linux. Then RedHat once you have your feet wet. Then on to anything you like after that, maybe just jump into OpenBSD.
ohhh boy, that was uncalled for... but it was dang funny... I would like more references to command line options and maybe a MAN page to look at the different fags (flags) for a command.
my college supports the use of the unix environment in most classes. There are VB classes and they choose to teach J++ instead of Java, but thats their problem... they also teach Linux Device drivers and the OS class is in Linux. Most of the teachers have the students SSH into the Computer Science's Linux box and do all their work on there. that way there is no problem with different compilers, people can always SSH.
i think it's a good thing. Even if StarOffice for Linux jumps light years ahaid of the version for Windows. Thats all fine with me as long as it gets better compatibility with the Office products. I think Sun is doing a great thing, maybe it'll GPL more stuff!
I've played SOF on windows, and it's not all that bad... Granted it is worse then other games of the same type, but PG-13 movies are worse then this game. But I can't wait untill the Linux port comes out! now i don't have to use another computer to play!!
Microsoft is just jumping on Slashdot because they think it will quiet down the Unix community. They don't want an uprising and a revolution. I say that if Microsoft gains any footing in the issue that we (the people of the free world) respond in a way that would gain attention. Revolution will happen and we can easily overthrough the Communist threat in our midsts. Are weapons are stronger and more reliable, we are wiser and more resoursfull. I believe we can overthrough oppression! will you join me?
I think i'm gunna get one of these. I'll just have the rebate sent to a PO Box where the Internet subscripton will be, then cancel the PO Box. It's worth it for one of these.
well, put it this way. You let one thing slip and everyone thinks they can run over you again. Abit wants to get away with keeping some drivers for their boards in house, but it won't happen. Personally i'm pretty pissed at the whole incident and will probably never buy an Abit board ever again no matter if they do release the source at a later date.
don't worry about it. I've submited many stories days before they got posted on/. and mine were rejected. It doesn't matter, I don't care, all I care about is that the community gets the story.
Loki sent me Quake3Arena for Linux last week. I have been playing it ever since then, and it's WAY faster then the Windows version. But I still haven't gotten the box yet, just the CD and the CD-Key. It's a great thing that Quake3 for Linux will be sold in the stores!!
I was using DOS and MACs when I was 5. DOS was easy for me. And now I'm as stupid as dung, it didn't mean a thing!!!! Just because everyone doesn't have a kid expert in their neighborhood doesn't mean they don't exist!
the modem pops off the back... just rig a network card to fit in!! haha, yea right!!! I guess dialup is the only way... and that crappy cd they have for using the internet... I wonder how they will do multi-player games.
I think that that article is 100% true. Linux is "a toy", just believe anything you read!! go for it, it's fun!! you should try it some time!!
dang, i hate idiots who write reviews about somthing they've never used! It's just like me telling you about a movie even though I've never actually seen it, but i have seen the preview
I have RedHat 6.0 and 192megs of RAM... I have 200mb swap partition on another Hard Drive... I also run GNOME, and barley ever see it use all my RAM or even touch my SWAP... execpt when I use VMware, then it uses about 10mb of SWAP. A 50 - 100 mb partition is all you need.
The most problem I have with my computers or other computers is that the dang hard drives start dying!!! I still have a 386-40 and it works great execpt that it's had 5 different hard drives in it's life!! But then again I have a 400mb Maxtor that runs every day since it was the bigest drive on the market... It's all about quality, a lot of people hate Western Digitial and I know why, I see a lot of them die compared to other drives. All that is needed is companies to make good drives. Solid state storage is comming, but we'll have to hold on.
crackers: the ones who took the password protection off my video games.
hackers: the ones who wrote code and broke into computer systems.
It seems like you've got to be both anyways, they kinda go hand in hand... but the Media blows it all out of proportion. A true hacker is one who NEVER destroys data, on gathers, not for personal gain but for knowledge!

PS.
I want to retire when I'm 40.
hey wait a minuite, doesn't SuSE support UDMA66 out of the box?

i ran a stock RedHat on a duron and it ran fine. I also compiled 2.2.16 and it ran fine, I don't know what problem you got.

nope, I checked it out just for you. The sources to some of the programs are not there. They are not anywhere.
