Why not look to a site like rentacoder.com and try to pickup a small project? You can do it to make money or you can simply do it to gain experience writing software for other people. This could be a great way to start building your programming resume if you decide to become a full time java developer after completing school. If you were able to successfully complete a few projects before graduation they'll certainly become interesting talking points on your resume and help to set you a part from the other recent graduates. In a tough job market anything you can do helps plus you'll get a chance to see if you really want to work as a programmer without having to commit to a full time job. It will probably be one of the few times in your programming career where you get to pick and choose the projects you work on.
Google has positioned itself to survive on the Internet once we move past point and click ads, pop-ups and direct marketed emails.
At the end of the day people need marketed to because they don't know where to go for the things they want/need. Google is positioning itself to do this directly with its overly large suite of products.
When businesses stop spending traditional advertising dollars they won't be able to bank them they'll just be forced to redirect them into Google.
Handsets, Buzz, GMAIL, Search engine data it all rolls up into a marketing profile so Google can predict what you're looking for. If Google can help get you to the right place and you buy something they will ultimately get a piece of the final sale.
Driving to work and need a coffee? Google has the data to get you to a Starbucks or a local Mom and Pop. Do you really think this will stay free for the businesses?
As a small business owner I am happy to turn them over a commission on sales I would have otherwise not received without their help.
I truly believe Google will become just another cost of doing business similar to how Visa/Mastercard charges are.
For what its worth Debian released an update to Apache and guidance on how to mitigate the vulnerability.
They did indicate that this was only a work around and a protocol redesign would be required in order to completely fix the vulnerability.
I wonder how many people just simply aren't paying attention and will get burnt by this problem. I want to believe not many but I honestly know better...
It's interesting that the poster was quick to point out that the website is SEO-optimized. Taking a look at the HTML it looks pretty clean to me with plenty of links but nothing out of the ordinary. The poster should also point out that the website uses lots of text, favors the color black and leans towards blue-colored-links because it's equally irrelevant.
I'm not sure what his point is by this other then to make the post sound more emotional. I'm all for a good sensationalize but pointing out SEO-optimization in this context is stupid.
I met my first serious girlfriend of 5 years on what used to be Yahoo Personals (I think it's still around or it's probably Match.com powered now).
My most recent (going on 3 years) girlfriend who I would consider my long term partner I met on Craigslist.org. I know it sounds lame but finding someone who was smart and shared at least a few similar interests is a challenge especially when your passion is technology.
Might be worth a try?
It takes time to get your posts right before you get responses. The best advice I can give if you try your hand at online dating is share a picture within an email or two, and make sure to meet up in person as opposed to developing a relationship via email first. People tend to be different when you meet them in person. Get out there and go on as many dates as you can. You'll find someone for you.
And people who make fun of you for trying are lonely and miserable and they are just projecting onto you because you're trying to correct your situation!
I live in an area that would be directly impacted by this type of plan. I own an old home in the North Side of Pittsburgh and I am in absolute support of this. 1/2 of the houses on my street are abandoned and boarded up. If the City were to come in and demolish them (which they have slowly started to do) it would not only increase the safety of the area. It would also raise the property values which would in turn increase tax income to the City.
The problem we're faced with is no new development will happen in parts of the area until we purge the beyond repair buildings. Why would any erect a new structure next to a building that can barely stand?
I certainly think this idea is better then doing what we've been doing for 30+ years. Letting the urban core of Pittsburgh slowly rot while the young professionals continue to avoid the City for the suburbs. City living in Pittsburgh is on it's way back in areas that are in better shape, demolishing the buildings that are not salvageable will only accelerate this renewal!
This is certainly an interesting concept but I have a handful of concerns -
1. Why as an investor would I pay a 30% premium to purchase physical gold? 2. Assuming I would I then have to worry about keeping the gold physically secure once I take possession of it. 3. I run into issues when trying to sell the gold after I've taken possession because how can anyone be sure that I haven't tampered with the gold? How do they know that 1oz is still 1oz? What if I drilled and filled it?
There are many other ways to purchase gold as an investment that eliminate the above issues. Gold ETF's are one. They are easy to trade and move in and out of. There are services that will let me purchase gold and store it at their locations, and will certify the amounts as to avoid purity issues as well as security issues.
If you truly believe that the world economies are going to collapse why bother to buy gold at all? You should be buying guns. Believe me, you'll need them to protect more important things like your family and your home.
Interesting idea but only suckers will buy from them.:-)
Idealistic or not you hit the nail on the head with your post.
Plenty of companies look at software as a tool similar to a hammer or a lathe. Which model or version of the hammer will get the job done for me in the most cost-effective manner.
I work for a large industrial manufacture and we are deploying plenty of Linux right along side HP-UX, Microsoft 2003, AS400 and Mainframe. What tool makes the most sense for the problem we are trying to solve?
I honestly believe the longer you work for a for profit company the more you start to understand the statement "Choose the right tool for the job."
They are absolutely not doing this. I am an existing AT&T customer who has an iphone. I am no longer under a current contract as I have been waiting for the new iPhone. I just double checked before posting and I qualify for an upgrade to the new iPhone if at the discount pricing if I am willing to sign a 2 year agreement with AT&T.
Apple doesn't subsidize these phones the phone carriers do.
Nothing to see here but confused forum posters and bloggers move along please.
It's not just 50 states but each and every individual boro, township, and parish located in those 50 states as they can each make and levy sales tax law.
There are literally 1000's and 1000's of different sales tax codes through out the United States of America.
Without some provisions for small businesses an Internet Sales Tax Bill would essentially eliminate the small businesses ability to compete online.
Gen-Y - What if you went to the library and borrowed the book, and then downloaded the e-version. Once you finish reading the book delete the e-book and return the library book?
I don't see an ethical problem here, not sure about the legal ramifications. Knowing copyright holders it's probably completely illegal.
I use this to remove formatting that is included in the reports spit out from the mainframe -
cat REPORT_NAME | sed 's/[^a-z0-9,.-]//gi' > REPORT.out
It uses a few commands to accomplish this but I figured I would include the entire command line for completeness. It keeps all letters, numbers, ',', '.', and '-'. If you need other characters you can always add them to the regular expression.
So if I am understanding this new "face punching device" it's a little black key fob thingy that I carry around and when I press the button people punch each other in the face?

The CPAN folks could complain to their ISP and have them drop the traffic that's coming in to their boxes.
Most ISP's will work with you to correct DDOS problems.

Every once in a while the internet totally redeems itself. :-P
What do you think the demon baby these two are going to have is going to look like?
Wait are we still talking about Iran?
Good overview of the two technologies.
One point of correction the iPhone has successful run Apache so it can be used as a web server (for what it's worth). Here's a related article -

If they have a true transparent proxy then putting in another proxy will cause your traffic to hit the transparent proxy then the other proxy.
The point of a transparent proxy is to force all HTTP traffic through it without giving the end user a choice.
The tax laws are so complicated that we run a cluster of servers that do nothing but crunch sales tax numbers.

But spend less money. Stop trying to tax us to death.
Sendmail can slow to a crawl but it doesn't generally crash. Run sendmail and you can handle this sort of nonsense.
If only we could do CAL properly...

You can put the request out with whatever terms you'd like and the let the market set the price.
