  1. I dont get it on Black Holes From the LHC Could Last For Minutes · · Score: 1

How is a mini black hole supposed to do anything anyway? I know with the big ones you have lots of mass in a very small space thus gravity is strong. the earth is 1G because mos of the time you are very far from its discrete particles. (I'm being attracted by dirt in china but its far away, that's why gravity within a spherical shell integrates to nothing) but if all that Chinese dirt were all within a few feet of me gravity would be stronger.

an LHC black hole would be of negligible mass. aren't they pretty much colliding single atoms? so wouldn't the total mass be at most what 2 atoms worth. I don't care how dense it is there's only so much gravity you can get out of 2 atoms. and as close as atoms usually are to each other (and unaffected by each others gravity) i would think that one of these black holes could pass clean through solid matter without anything getting close enough to be "sucked in"

anyway Thad's how I've always seen it perhaps someone can correct my concept of these phenomena

    there are exceptions

"(3) Computer programs and video games distributed in formats that have become obsolete and which require the original media or hardware as a condition of access. A format shall be considered obsolete if the machine or system necessary to render perceptible a work stored in that format is no longer manufactured or is no longer reasonably available in the commercial marketplace."

if you don't consider NES machines on ebay "reasonably available" then those carts are obsolete and you can circumvent copyright protections. which could be construed as "i have this NES cart but no hardware i am circumventing that via emulation" however this is all DMCA, copyright law should still prohibit getting games you don't own.

in the end its all very grey and that's why it persists

  7. For $50-100 million.... on Wikipedia Almost Reaches $6 Million Target · · Score: 1

I personally wouldn't be opposed to a few text based ads in wikipedia. especially if it allowed the wiki to keep going.

really a few ads wont hurt its nature, however that much revenue might. if they could really be earning 100s of millions of dollars annually they could take the wiki to a whole new level.

This could be a fantastic thing increasing the accuracy and depth of the articles hiring full time writers, contributor incentives and generally encouraging its growth across the board. but if done incorrectly could turn sour and corporate.

OTOH they could donate the money above their normal operation costs.. $100 million would buy a lot of OLPC XO laptops...

actually there's already precedence for exactly the opposite of what you preach. cannabis has already become decriminalized in several states http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Map-of-US-state-cannabis-laws.svg

but more to point was the use of CB radios from Wikipedia:

"Originally, CB required a license and the use of a call sign, but when the CB craze was at its peak, many people ignored this requirement and used made-up nicknames or "handles". The many restrictions on the authorized use of CB radio led to widespread disregard of the regulations, most notably in antenna height, distance restriction for communications, licensing and the use of call signs, and allowable transmitter power. Eventually, the license requirement was dropped entirely."

so basically constant commin disregard for the law aka ILLEGAL use has shifted the law in these cases.

I don't get it why do people actually *like* steam? to me its worse than most of the DRM out there.

I need to have it installed
it likes to run all the time
    it serves unwanted ads
it needs to be running and connected to the net every time I play a game (unless you completely disable you connection then you can use offline mode)
forces updates (great for online games but crap for single player)
and 10 years down the road if Valve goes under all your steam games are pretty much boned (just like the original spore DRM)

to me steam is just as bad as the other DRM. last couple months I've wanted to go back and play g-mod but right now my comp is steam free and I haven't been able to bring myself to re-install it.

  10. Re:Numbers don't neccesarily tell the whole story on Game Devs Warming Up To More Mature-Rated Games On the Wii · · Score: 1

metriod prime is the most popular because the popular PS3/360 FPS games (Halo 3, Metal Gear Sold 4, and Gears of War.) *aren't* on the Wii so you cant do a real comparison ther of who would buy those games.

RE4 was very much an 'M' game and sold well, the controls were awesome. the Wii lags in "hardcore" areas due to its weak graphical performance, particularly in FPS games which are usually bleeding edge in the graphical department.

360/PS3 gamers would be upset if you toned the graphics down on a big title (like GoW2) to hit the Wii market and Wii owners would be miffed if their version was in someway inferior in a multi version release.

I would like to see someone write a high profile worm that infects computers and then randomly downloads songs/videos via file sharing networks (ie torrents)

if the worm had the exposure some of these bot nets do then you could never tell who was downloading themselves or due to this virus. and without individual suits and forensic analysis of the users computer to determine the case you could never really prosecute anyone and the ISPs couldn't really do anything about it either.
