  1. FORTRAN not a good example. on SCO: Code Proof Analyzed, Linus Interviewed · · Score: 1

The name FORTRAN doesn't consist of initials, but two syllables from other words. As such there's really no question of whether you should verbally spell out its name.

  2. To hell with that. on Ph.Ds in IT - Good or Bad for a Career? · · Score: 1

If you want to get a Ph.D, then get it. Don't think about its effect on your career. Do what you love and love what you do. If this means doctoral studies, then go for it. Conversely, don't do something out of character just because it might give you a +1 to an ability check. That's for weenies.

  3. Other than source, release Slackware packages. on Installing Everywhere? · · Score: 2, Informative

If you must release binaries, do it in the Slackware format. They're just tarballs with install scripts. Everyone's got tar.

Should be "is not the greatest human value".

Maybe I should have just omitted that sentence anyway. It's rather pissy.

  5. Whoosh! on FreeCraft Cease and Desisted by Blizzard · · Score: 1

The point of my (admittedly absurd) analogy is that unethical actions should not be justified by an argument that those actions are profitable (or serve to protect a business model). But perhaps I am a radical for thinking that the desire for money is the greatest human value.

  6. See also Schizoid Personality Disorder on PDD, Asperger, and Geek Syndrome? · · Score: 1
Some who may see themselves in a description of Asperger Syndrome may also want to take a look at the so-called schizoid personality disorder.

    Here's a link: [Link]

There is some controversy about this. Many are inclined to speak of a "schizoid personality type" which encompasses many of the tendencies of the "disorder", but doesn't have the unhealthy connotations. Some refer to the INTP Myers-Briggs type as "Schizoid". My advice is to read it, and think about how it compares to your personality, but don't immediately diagnose yourself as having a personality disorder. If you are unsatisfied with your life, then talk to someone else.

  7. Assassins gotta eat too! on FreeCraft Cease and Desisted by Blizzard · · Score: 1

I'm sick and tired of the bad press that professional assassins get. They have families to feed, and a prohibition on murder threatens their way of life.

  8. History has shown by definition. on DeCSS Arguments in CA Supreme Court Case · · Score: 1

If something is breakable by definition, then the breakability is self-evident, and can at most be confirmed by history.

  9. Doesn't matter. on U.S. National Do-Not-Call Registry is Law · · Score: 1

The limitations placed on the federal government (especially by the Tenth Amendment) have meant almost nothing for quite some time now. Once in a while the SCOTUS will smack them down on something, but most of the abuses are not reviewed by the court.

  10. Blizzard: it's been fun on Blizzard Rains on Bnetd Project · · Score: 4, Interesting

You guys make some great games. I've had countless hours of fun with the Diablos, the Warcrafts, and Starcraft. Now I'll never buy any of your products again. Bye.

  11. What they must do on Quicktime Under Linux With MPlayer · · Score: 1

Perhaps you should demand a refund. Or maybe there should be some sort of law that requires people to be polite.
  12. fvwm2 on Lightweight Window Managers? · · Score: 1

I use fvwm2. I like it, and it seems to run pretty well on my old laptop (486DX-50, 12MB). I even run it on my primary box (GNOME and KDE don't do much for me).

  13. Free clue on The Linux Distribution Game · · Score: 1
Often people say "x is gone" as a way of expressing their intention of getting rid of "x", even if they have not already done so. Sure, it's an abuse of language, but it happens.

Also, it seems to me that the author was merely reporting the words of the friend. If anyone was lying (assuming no abuse of language as described above), it would be the friend and not the author (who would be only quoting a lie).

    Relax.

  14. Lord knows I need a faster PDA on New Wireless Handhelds On The Way · · Score: 3, Funny
Because, being from the planet Krypton, I can move at amazing speeds, and accessing my address book and "to do" list is an unbearable, tedious chore because the processor can't keep up with me. I suppose you mere humans wouldn't really mind though.

There's also the fact that I want to do heavy number crunching on my PDA. Factoring large numbers into primes, running software to design chips with millions of transistors, etc. Palms just don't cut it in that department.

But maybe these CE devices are what I need. Since I also have tremendous strength, it would be no trouble to carry out the trash despite being weighed down by the many batteries that the CE devices would burn through.

  15. Slashdot: All Linux All The Time... on The Failure of Tech Journalism · · Score: 1
...except for the science articles. And the political articles. And some of the Q&A articles. And many of the interviews. And some other stuff. Other than that it's all about Linux. Well, maybe some BSD as well, but that's just another Linux distribution, right?

    Preach on, brother!

  16. Stop modifying the cookie! on Welcome to Slashdot 2.2 · · Score: 1

Every time I load up a new slashdot page, Mozilla informs me that slashdot.org wants to modify an existing cookie. This is really annoying. The old slashdot didn't do that. Please revert back to the previous behaviour.

  17. Shitty local radio markets on Net Radio Returns, With Targeted Ads · · Score: 1

I'm fortunate enough to live in an area (San Fransisco Bay Area) with a large number of college radio stations, so there's usually something good on the radio. However, I was visiting some friends recently (in the San Fernando Valley) and noticed that the radio dial there is full of crap. I ended up listening to the internet feed for KFJC while I was there. Sometimes "Why not just listen to the real radio" isn't enough.

  18. Minor correction on Slackware 8.0 Released · · Score: 1

  19. Don't home school. on Sean In The Middle · · Score: 4
If you home school your kids, you deprive them of valuable lessons in life -- for example, how are they going to learn about how screwed up the public education system is?

On a more serious note, school is important for learning how to deal with other people. Every home schooled person I've come across (warning! sample size of one!) has had problems interacting with people.

  20. Phalse Positives on Napster Traffic Drops · · Score: 1
I'm on Napster right now. The only files I'm currently sharing are live Phish tracks. The following have been filtered out:
    • Suzy Greenberg
    • Tweezer Reprise
    • Why Don't We Do It In The Road
That's out of 37 tracks. For a test, I had made a copy of "Why Don't We Do It In The Road" and called it "Madonna Sucks". That got filtered as well. Then I made a copy of "Blister In The Sun" and called it "Madonna Sucks", but that didn't get filtered. Strange.
  21. Never mind... on Play DVDs On Linux · · Score: 1

Never mind that you can legally download recordings of live concerts by certain generous musical groups like the Grateful Dead, Phish, and Dave Matthews Band. We can't let facts get in the way when there's trolling to be done.

  24. My thoughts. on Sweet, Sweet Mathworld Is Gone · · Score: 1
I was an infrequent user of mathworld. It was very useful in the undernet.org #math channel as you could refer people to a page instead of giving a long, drawn-out explanation in channel. On the other hand, I found some of the information to be rather incomplete. Much of the ring theory, for example, seemed to be skewed towards commutative rings. Several definitions were missing.

I think that this is an excellent excuse to make a new grass-roots math web database, perhaps based on the Everything engine. Perhaps I'll see what I can do about this.

  25. This is great news! on White House Wants 3G Bandwidth · · Score: 1
It is vitally important that this bandwidth be controlled by big corporations. Time has shown that private citizens need to be guided by the benevolent hand of big money, and this is made easier if big money controls the means of communication. We can thank the Democrats and Republicans for their consistent support of the corporate cause, which is reflected in actions such as this auction.

I ask my fellow (US) Slashdot readers to please let this continue by supporting these two fine parties in November. For more information, see Billionaires for Bush (or Gore).
