I still need to toss files from a bunch of servers down to an ancient, though quite functional Open VMS Alpha server... so long as legacy systems exist, legacy software will live on. Just keep the latest RFC handy.
I think we would need some sort of satellite in an orbit outside of GEO so the GEO stuff would pass below it. If we have a GEO orbit rogue, our "rustler" satellite would de-orbit and slowly match up with the rouge. Now that we're there we should grapple the rogue and spin up our really big gyroscopes to keep everything stable. Next, a device on the rover would produce a localized EMP burst to electronically "kill" the rogue. At this point, using maybe ion propulsion, we could safely de-orbit the whole mess or even slowly thrust the combined rustler and rogue out of earth orbit entirely and self destruct in some other handy gravity well (moon, sun, another planet).
Agreed that Firefly didn't last long enough to build up a log of baggage.
On the other hand, a partial reboot to get them out of a single star system might allow for a broader range of story lines.
We still have a bunch of Alphas scattered here and there running OpenVMS. I expect them to be around for a while longer too. They are remarkably stable systems.
I noticed MPX-32 is still around (I actually worked on that one).
I also use Windows, Linux and OS-X... but get off of my lawn anyway!
On a lighter note: don't forget that with only a few exceptions, the ones who end up in a jury are the people too stupid to get out of it.:)
I don't know why this is on a lighter note; this is a real problem. People on juries are people with a strong sense of social responsibility and people too stupid to get out of it. You can probably guess the ratio of the former to the latter. Given how important a functioning judiciary is to society, jury service really ought to be better rewarded, so competent people don't have such a strong incentive to get out of it.
Personally I believe jury duty is an important civil responsibility so I never attempt to get out of jury duty.
On the other hand... I might be stupid too.
The company I was working for in 1984 (a supermini computer manufacturer) assisted in rendering the "master program" which while primitive, was still CG.

Actually... Hello World of Warcraft would have the side effect that you're kids are guaranteed to be safe from pregnancy, STDs, or any form of social life.
Keeping in mind that your comment was posted with humor in mind... it did bring to mind (for me anyway), that I don't read/. for news... I read it as a great place to discuss the news reported elsewhere.
I use Ubuntu because I was able to shove the CD in my XP Pro system and have it create a nice dual boot environment, can see and work with files over on windows and let me get back into using linux rather painlessly. Put me in the "Just Works" camp but still likes to tinker.
As for the Nvidia driver... I have a "Windows Vista Capable" laptop so of course I don't have Nvidia hardware... I have the Intel video hardware. If I had Nvidia hardware I would actually be able to run Vista (assuming I ever wanted to).
So... what's the name of the Oblivion mod you mentioned? It sounds interesting... and the out of the box game, as you mentioned, could use some more items if interest.
Fortunately it is developer tool (hack) that will never see live production.
Had this been a production task, I would normally use the label method you mentioned (and not clear the user input)/smile. I normally hide the label, and when needed, make it visible with red text (which contrasts well on a "putty" background).
Actually I ran into this today... I have a simple dialog with a text box for input, a button to submit the input, a button to exit the dialog and a datetime control to show the result in... the user enters a value that computes to a value outside the min/max for the date time control and I'm in the catch clause holding the exception... clear the input, check, beep a couple of times, check... now how do I tell the user to use smaller values? I use the pop-up message box of course since everything else in the interface is inappropriate for displaying an error... sure, I could dump it in a status bar, but nobody reads those either.
Exercise for the reader: work out how you're going to power the climber.
Hmm... ground based lasers aimed at solar cells on the elevator that in turn power electric motors for climbing and other systems on the elevator.
Not an original idea by the way, but I don't recall where I saw/read about the idea.
Actually Ping or Knock is pre-ignition. In other words, pressure, heat or some other factor causes the fuel-air mixture to ignite before it's supposed to.
Both for Google and whomever gets their hands on this information... this data is potentially valuable from a marketing standpoint. Even if what is being watched can't be broken down into demographics, it's a huge data base of what Internet uses want to watch. I suspect the value of this data from a marketing research point of view is worth more than any loss of revenue caused by people watching copyrighted materials.
I wish they would get in the habit of mentioning if the letters are molded into the keys or do they use decals.
As a gamer, my home systems always ends up with blank WASD keys... here at work the home keys get a beating... the two year old keyboard I'm using now has half of decals for the A and S keys missing.
My answer at home was a backlit keyboard from Logitech.
Personally I don't care if the keyboard clicks or not... I do like to be able to read the keys though.

You'll get Areo when you pry it out of my cold dead... damn... it rebooted again!

I for one am glad to see the end of the Poop Smear theme.

Done properly, it would be: "And also in the news... BILLY MAYS DIED THIS WEEKEND..."

It's too bad you can't mod something as Funny and Insightful at the same time.

I bet those are just script notes for a Robot Chicken skit.

So you could power your car with road rage? Cool!

If it wasn't for things like this, we would never upgrade our infrastructure...
