Capturing emissions is one thing and only half the battle. An attacker would have valuable knowledge, but still requires a vector to use it. Since they are 1-20m away, physical access seems likely, but then they really didn't need to sniff KBs to break into a system, did they?
How about creating some 'emissions' ? Maybe even creating some when no one is looking? No IP stack to trace, no logs to reveal. Now that would be much more elegant.
Well then we obviously differ in our chosen methods of discussion. You choose to base your opinions and statements on speculation while I prefer debating the currently known facts.
In its current form/proposal I won't deny that is fairly harmless. I did RTFA, and do understand.
Oil and water. I ride as well, and I gotta say, threatening (or performing) the actions you describe, as you describe them are a death wish.
I will present you with the very real risk that your reckless driving habits have just endangered your life, before it endangers mine.
Wow. So if someone is on a phone, you will threaten their life? What do you about speeders? what do you do about people who tailgate you while you're on your bike? I'm interested because I'm struggling to find a threat from a biker while moving.
I will not be giving you my plate number. Keep asking though.
I don't give a fuck about the law.
Hint: Neither do the people using cells.
You can spend your time "freaking out" while I teach you that you're not as safe inside your metal cage as you think you are.
Cloudy day worries here. If you're on a bike, and I'm in 3 ton Excursion, you will lose. You either have to go real fast in front of me or not ever try to get alongside.
Seat belts were widely installed as options before they became mandatory 'to save lives'. You used to be able to legally opt-out (we used to cut the damn things off), even at car speeds.
How is this different, except that seat belt technology, subsequent regulation and mandate has evolved much further than this new application?
My tinfoil hat is still new and shiny, my parents have long since passed.
Since you live in NY where its illegal (based on a quick google), and I live in Mass, where it is not illegal, its clear we are going to have different views on 'haranguing' commuters.
If you want to go into Bernie Goetz mode while driving a motorcycle, you go right ahead. I think THATS the aggressive posture, not the one (in your circumstance) breaking the law. How many other laws do you harrass or harangue people for?
Since you're stopped, and straddling a motorcycle, what would you do if someone got out of their car and rushed you because they thought you were being a moron? They way you describe your antics, I'd think you were being a moron.
But you just put yourself in the other category: people who use your cars as weapons, thinking you're immune to the consequences.
My big Ford is my daily commuter for protection first. I feel far safer in it than in most other vehicles. Metal + mass is inherently safer than plastic and economy. It just so happens that the best offense is a good defense for the very same reason. Offense is not my intention, but I'll certainly not discard the advantage.
If you act like a moron near me, I'm very likely to "freak out". It's a character flaw, I know, but a very easily defensible flaw based on the road conditions and sudden distraction at the time of the incident.;)
So thanks for the challenge. I will be looking for you on the road. What's your license plate number? Please drive around NYC sometime soon - when can I expect you?
I don't think any cop really gives a shit about people talking on their cell phones while driving in NYC, but that is admittedly a suspicion, and not based on empirical data. The fact that you've taken it upon yourself to rid the world of evil cellphone driving overlords is evidence enough for me.
And I say that as a motorcyclist who will harangue drivers I see pressing phones to their faces in traffic, and follow them home screaming blood at them if they don't hang up when I make the "hang it up" motion at them.
You ride erratically, shouting obscenities and irrational warnings, with at least one hand off the controls in order to force commuters (who may not be breaking any law) to follow your standard or expectation?
What if you cause a driver to freak-out and hit you or hit someone else? I like Darwin as much as the next guy, but those actions are reprehensible on your part.
I happen to drive a Ford Excursion. Weenies who act like that on bikes (actually most vehicles for that matter) are about as worrisome as a cloudy day and may become a gooey bumper ornament without an 'opt-out' clause. YMMV.
Ah, I gotta love the nanny state. I've never heard a good explanation for why the state should give two shits about whether or not I'm wearing a seat belt.
The difference between this and turning your phone off is that it tells the caller why you're not answering their call.
This is a direct invasion of privacy.
- I do not want unsolicited callers to know WHAT I'm doing. Imagine a house robber knowing I'm in the car. Maybe thats a little over the top in tinfoil-hat-land, but plausible, and inherently dangerous. - I may not want family or friends to know WHAT I'm doing. I'm no boy scout. - I certainly want to retain the ability to 'screen my calls', whether I'm driving or taking a crap. Yes, I've taken a crap at 'car speed'.
Simply put, my cell phone should not disclose anything I don't set it to via ringer/voicemail options.
Next idea these genius' will come up with is that the GPS tracker will TELL callers exactly where I am, and not just what I'm doing.
Why would it be so bad for the US to open up those old mills and actually produce quality goods and materials for a fair and decent price?
I may be way off with regard to the big picture, but I'm really tired of the foreign policy the US Gov has had where we spend a large portion of our resources on other people and places who don't give a shit.
Lets bring it all home and take care of our own house before we pledge to fix everyone else.
Shouldn't this be the burden of the music/film/literary industry rather than the federal government?
This is what the music industry WANTS. They want to maintain the copyrights for life + forever so they can continue to make $$ off of the same stale material AND they seem to endorse a 'pay for play' scheme. I'm saying that 'life + n years' is wrong for a copyright. I'd be much more amenable to something like 5 years before works or IP were pushed to public domain and available.
Just keep copyright bound to a person and not to a company.
I generally agree.
And let the copyright be valid only 5 years after the death of that person to let it be able to cover for funeral costs in case that's needed.
I disagree. We should not have laws or rules on the books which -encourage- the one hit wonder, or the 'create ONE work, live forever off of it' mentality.
What you're paying for is the theatre experience. You're paying for the employees of the theatre, the rent, the heating, a/c, maintenance and eventually, the movie itself.
Theaters +1 overrated. Mod them down.
My HT experience is by far more entertaining than going to IMAX/AMC or the like. I'll happily wait for the DVD to release and watch it at home.
Theaters are just another dying/failing business model. It used to be fun, exciting, and hip (I suppose) to watch midnight releases of new movies, or be the first to see a new movie, but nowadays, its just not.
I remember how cool it was to see Star Wars, The China Syndrome, and other movies back in the 70's, but Now that most media is or could be digital, and I've invested a fair chunk into a HT, I'd rather just watch it at home. I'm by no stretch of the definition an 'av-phile', but I have nice gear, a comfortable viewing room, good quality popcorn, and can by-and-large control the stink/noise/annoyances that always accompany theaters.
So what if I have to wait a little bit, the experience is far more enjoyable.
Users, though, should be expected to have a minimum degree of intelligence before getting involved with something that requires some basic thinking, such as a computer.
And I said that by following THAT logic, it is no surprise that LINUX (Gnome/KDE/X-whatever) was not on more desktops, in which I thought I inferred that people were prefer to stay with what they know (read:MS-Windows). Clearly the usability curve to LINUX is more than the usability curve of 95/98/XP, and maybe even Vista for common tasks in the current UI schemes.
Power-on to using web, mail, chat, and office applications should not be that different on any current UI. I think it's easy to agree that 3.1/OS2 1.3 style Program Manager -> 95/98/ME/XP/Gnome/KDE/CDE/Mac menu/icon is the largest gap in recent years.
My point was that the transition from one UI to another SHOULD NOT require PC skills, or cause confusion. I thought I strengthened that argument when I likened PCs to tools (in that case a chainsaw) which may require some reading/training, but in the end should not cause excessive pain/confusion. A PC is a tool, not a mystical black box.
Re: WHOOSH. No, I was not making a joke, but I was wondering if somehow you were.;) I do think that Windows 3.1 -> XP is a bit extreme of an example; I'd be pretty surpised if 3.1 era hardware would even run XP reasonably well so it's not an reinstall, but a brand new computer. I think we all can/should forgive a bit of UI improvement based on hardware, best practices, coding efficiencies, etc...), but I was not minimizing your grandfather's plight.

If you don't, the guy in the cube next to you might already have the equivalent. ;)
There is always an alternative. This time, Apple is just asking you to give them 700$ more and buy MBP.
Apple is NOT following M$'s screwup.
M$ released Vista, which has no real advantages over XP... people figured this out rather quickly and don't buy it.
Apple comes out with a new gizmo, and leverages their hardware propriety to get people to buy their wares.
Smart. In a way.
>These cannot be perceived directly by normal people.
So, kind of like tang. I see a theme here.
Well then we obviously differ in our chosen methods of discussion. You choose to base your opinions and statements on speculation while I prefer debating the currently known facts.
In its current form/proposal I won't deny that is fairly harmless. I did RTFA, and do understand.
I believe there is potential for privacy issues.
I'm on a motorcycle - I'm aggressive.

You can't pay taxes if you're dead.
Good thing there's a passenger mode and you can basically opt out.
Why would you pay for a service option, and then opt-out?
Can I have your $10/month instead? I won't call, and you won't need the service.
The difference between this and turning your phone off is that it tells the caller why you're not answering their call.

Nah... Dancing with the stars" is the real turing test for AI.

The excerpt reads like a pre-teen love story.
I downloaded and then I pressed enter
I installed and then I was online
And thats chapter 5, what the hell does he write about (being all of 9 years old) for the first 4 chapters?
This won't qualify as proper fish wrapping.
I've got news for you. Torrent sites have ads too.
I block ad sites. No, I don't care what the moral or legal implications are of blocking ad sites. It's my bandwidth, not theirs.
Shouldn't this be the burden of the music/film/literary industry rather than the federal government?

We are talking copyright, not trademark.
Your IP has been recorded
I hope they are not using the MediaSentry method of IP recognition and determination.

Public Domain is our friend.
They were PCs. $6/ea seems about right
I'm a PC, and I'm about right.
DRM is a joke
No argument.
will just become more of a joke as more people learn how to use bittorrent.
If its not fresh/new, 2 seeds and 100 leechers is the joke. Its a faster download to google for
"Index of" + mp3 + [insert_band_name_here] -html
