Brainfart re: Dido. It was early and i was hungover as a result of Valentine's Day. I don't remember seeing anything about The Abduction (because i can't spell Entfurung), but really as far as I'm concerned Flute's a singspiel but an opera to everyone else.
Me, I call it a marathon. Papageno's a role and a half. I hurt myself twice during the production.
I won't even touch Wagner yet, I'm only 25; besides that, my voice and style lends itself more to comic roles like Figaro and Papageno, though I've done parts of Rigoletto and have an intense desire to be Iago in Otello.
So's Verdi. Giuseppe Verdi. Giuseppe. French? Christ.
Die Zauberflote (aka The Magic Flute), properly, is not opera nor operetta but a singspiel.
English was the first language to have an opera (Dido and Anaeus by Henry Purcell). Popular English operas include the translated works of Kurt Weill (The Threepenny Opera, Street Scene) and more recently Moore's The Ballad of Baby Doe.
If you'd like to discuss French opera composers, the only one of real note was Bizet, of Carmen fame. You could possibly make a case for Gounod for Faust and Offenbach for Les Contes d'Hoffman, but Bizet's the big French operatic gun.
Regarding opera seria:
Of the fifty [Handel] wrote between 1705 and 1738, Alcina (1735), Ariodante (1735), Orlando (1733), Rinaldo (1711,1731), Rodelinda (1725), and Serse (also known as Xerxes) (1738) stand out and are now performed regularly in opera houses and concert halls.
I've seen your kind before...bright eyed, idealistic, a happy go lucky kid with stars in their eyes, thinking that everything will be right with the world that they've had a hand in creating.
Then you find out you're dealing with EA Games.
They really don't care what you think.
You have no rights. It's their game, their servers, and their world. You own nothing in it.
You want to cancel? Go ahead. Those that stay behind will pick up the slack on their bottom line.
Hell, you know they can end The Sims Online or any other game at a moment's notice like they did with Majestic Online, right?
The virtual world concept isn't new. It's been around for a long time. EA's got a lot of experience with it.
You and 10 other people (even 50 other people) mean nothing to their bottom line on any game.
To paraphrase The Tick, reality is a harsh mistress.
I'm guessing that either way we're not going to get the Scouring of the Shire
NO. NO WE'RE NOT.
DOES THIS HAVE TO BE REITERATED EVERY TIME SOMETHING COMES UP ABOUT ROTK?
I mean, seriously, people. We've been told that the Scouring isn't going to be in the movie for...oh, three years now. Three years is a long time. Long enough for people to find out that the Scouring isn't in the movie, at least.
Not "in theory" but "by law" a student cannot be penalized for not saying the Pledge. Well known in most high schools across the country, that; I didn't say it in high school nor did most of my friends, and nobody took any notice.
Where you failed to RTF'nA is that this is not a student saying "I was penalized for not wanting to say the pledge." Ergo, here's some relevant text (bolding mine):
In the Pledge of Allegiance case, Michael Newdow, an atheist, sued the Sacramento County, California, school district where his daughter attended, saying that
teacher-led recitation by students violates his 9-year-old child's religious liberty.
Legal precedent makes reciting the pledge a voluntary act, but Newdow argues it is unconstitutional for students to be forced to hear it, saying the teacher-led recitations carry the stamp of government approval.
"I believe in the Constitution," Newdow told CNN last year. "The Constitution says that government isn't supposed to be infusing religion into our society, and so I asked to have that upheld."
Forced to hear it? You've really got to be kidding me, here. I heard a lot of things I disagreed with, even when I was nine, and even worse, his daughter had nothing to do with it other than being a stepping stone for him to sue, as per the CNN article (again, bolding mine):
Neville: At what point did your daughter come home to you and say she was ostracized for not saying the Pledge of Allegiance?
Newdow: My daughter is in the lawsuit because you need that for standing. I brought this case because I am an atheist and this offends me, and I have the right to bring up my daughter without God being imposed into her life by her schoolteachers. So she did not come and say she was ostracized.
Neville: Why do you think that it wasn't enough just to tell your daughter, "It's OK not to say this if you don't want to say this, if you don't believe this"?
Newdow: I believe in the Constitution. The Constitution says that government isn't supposed to be infusing religion into our society, and so I asked to have that upheld.
Hrm. let's look at the Bill of Rights...
Amendment I. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Boil it down. There will be no state religion, no laws saying "you can't worship this god or that one" (qv. Church of Satan, etc) you can't make a law abolishing freedom of speech (qv. CDA, CIPA, etc), and you can't keep the people from assembling peacefully.
Beautiful dichotomy we live in, here: In God We Trust, but Novuum Ordo Seculorum.
I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

Here, I'll help you recall: why i won't switch to lightweight firebird by heymjo (244283) on 07:17 AM June 25th, 2003 (#6292624) in mozilla, type something in the adress bar , press down key and you get "search google for" , press enter and boom results are there. I don't want to switch to a different search field or even set up parameterized keywords to do this.. Google search with 2 keys (down + enter) is for me the killer feature as i do this well over a hundred times per day
I was merely pointing out that bitching that Phoenix/Firebird/Whatever actually HAS a Google Search that you apparently didn't take the time to bother finding. Instead of typing it in your address bar you put it in the little one with the Google "G" in it. "Switching to a different search field" aside, saying "down and enter" is better than "enter" is kinda, well...pointless. Much like your response, and this one to you now. As it is, enjoy.
I was going to burn some moderation points here, but I felt I needed to reply...
You mean you don't want to use the Google seach built into Phoenix to the right of the address bar?
Google search with one key. See that magnifying glass? Click on it and you can switch that from Find in Page to Google or DMoz. Switch it to google and it'll stay that way, thus you can search google in one keystroke.
It is currently VERY illegal to buy or disable the "911 help" GPS emitter in digital cell phones in the US
Uh, my Sprint PCS Samsung 8100 allows me to turn it off at will.
As to your RFIDs in tires? According to your googlecache, "This application specification provides a methodology for the use of 2D symbology (for labels) and RFID in tires and wheels for product identification. This standard is designed to help automate the collection of tire information and the mounting and assembly process of tires with vehicles in the OEM environment. The standard provides information about the manufacturer, tire size, type, including Dot data, and additional optional information as outlined in this standard and as agreed to by the supplier."
They use it in the factory. I'm not particularly worried about them getting the same information about my tires that's on the outside.
Hell, my car uses import Wan Li performance tires anyway. If you're that worried, import them.
AT&T divested themselves of NCR (then AT&T Global Information Solutions) in 1996. Try NCR'S History next time.
I'll also admit I knew this because my father used to be a regional sales manager for NCR until his unceremonious layoff for being too old and not young enough. God Bless Corporate America!
I'd like to echo Chester's above comments. The last thing the Homestar Crew needed was a slashdotting. Anybody up for starting a tip jar to get them some new servers when their brand-new ones start smoking?
There's a game that tried this. It's called Jumpgate. They partnered with 3DO. 3DO screwed them by putting nearly 0 marketing into it and assuming all rights to the game.
Then Netdevil bought the game back from 3DO and are running it themselves, quite profitablby I might add.
1. We can still vote for the Communists or the Socialists or whatever, they're just less represented. I voted for Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys during the last presidential election.
2. No kidding? Tell me something I didn't know. There ARE no direct democracies in today's world. If there are, please enlighten me.
3. You think WE want all of this crap-ass news? Please. Take it. Of course, I read the NY Post on a regular basis so I'm probably not the best person to be commenting on news outlets. Thing is, American media's got the world by the balls and when that's happening, you dance.
I don't know what that last metaphor meant but I'm going to stop now. It's late.
Whoops, sorry; you have to go to the window NEXT to the addess bar to search Google.
You see, that's something I've never liked. If I want a search, I'd rather have a seperate but equal search bar than search-when-I-can't-find-it-or-you-typoed.
Fantasia 2000 had only one bit from the original Fantasia, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." The rest of the film was IMAX. I also believe that "The Sorceror's Apprentice" was shown in the IMAX theater with a large black border around it as it was in the DVD release.
Incidentally, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" was in 4:3 'standard' ratio since it's from the 30's.
