My advice is go to Linux Mint 12, based on Ubuntu and has a choice between Gnome3, Gnome2, and MATE. I'm actually using MATE and like it pretty well, it took a little tweaking to get to my liking, but is pretty good. I am still hoping Ubuntu will see the light and give us a choice, which includes Gnome2. I understand the ease of searching for a program for newer users, but for us old schoolers who know where are programs are and have been using menus for years, please leave the option in there.

Hollywood said we need this, here's $$$ for all of you, please pass it, not one thought was given to the people/companies that will have to implement it. What about the costs to the ISP, time, new equipment, labor - you can't just blocking 1000's of sites/IPs without someone adding them, memory and processor power to store and process. What about all the ways it can easily be gotten around?

My senator stated he was worried about the substantial negative impact of online piracy. I suggested he should be more worried about the substantial negative impact Congress' spending is having on this country. Piracy won't stop from SOPA/PIPA, I'd bet it picks up if passed. Just like the war on drugs has done little to impact drug use/sales, SOPA/PIPA will have very little affect on piracy.

The clause in SOPA about endangering the public's health, was just to get the money and support of the pharmaceuticals behind the bill. This bill needs to go away, not be amended.

I have had linux computers in a domain with windows computers, just not as extensively as you seem to be using. Linux might not be a viable option in your environment, perhaps you might want to try it and see on a test machine. Sorry didn't have a more definite answer.

As the IT Director in a company of about 50 desktops/laptops I did exactly that- installed Ubuntu on a couple of managers' (not computer savvy users) computers. ~2 years ago I installed Ubuntu 8.04 on their computers, converting them from XP. Haven't heard a complaint or had any major issue. Their main apps are web/email/documents/spreadsheets and a terminal program into the billing system.

Not only have they not had any problems, they had little to no trouble adjusting. They interact with all of our external suppliers/vendors/salespeople in sending and receiving Word and Excel using Open Office. Almost every other computer in this company has had malware/virus/rootkit problems of some sort (all XP machines).

So not only have I saved the company money on Windows/Office licensing, I also reduced downtime from the potential of malware. As computers are replaced here I'm replacing them with Ubuntu everywhere possible.

Don't be afraid and maybe give Ubuntu a try (or other nix distro) in your organization(s) (and before you flame me, yes I understand that many companies use Windows only software, so you are excluded, there are many organizations that only need web/email/docs/speadsheets/pdfs).

I do have Dreamweaver 8 running at the office under wine, it works but is somewhat quirky and can crash randomly. There is nothing that comes close to either program in linux (not nvu, bluefish, etc).

Ipod software is not an issue, cause itunes is worthless to me, ipod would be worthless as well if weren't for rockbox (great job guys).

There are *nix users out there willing to pay for software on linux (adobe are u listening?). I guess the cost vs profit would be too lop-sided or maybe they have enough money already. It is nice to only have to use one windoze box and for the most part rely soley on *nix platforms.

I set my p4 2.4 to do the same thing, it has yet to lockup after 6 months. I have used athlons with linux, one atlon cpu died after 6 months, tried duron with linux (won that cpu and mb) died after 8 months. If AMD made their own chipset things might be different and no, owning VIA doesn't count cause their (via's) hipsets have always have been buggy/lockups/crashes in every instance I've tried them. I give AMD a chance about every 6-8 months and since 98/99 (and before) when I was selling K62-400MHz and since then, they have always lost to Intel's stability and reliability. I have seen one dead Pentium III or IV in the past 4+ years that wasn't due to a surge, lightning damage, or user tampering (out of 1000's of machines), however, I have a shelf full of Duron, K62's, & Athlons that are dead as doorknobs.

I see alot of people complaining about backing up to a hard drive, to me it is the most sensible, reliable and economical. You can get 100+ GB IDE drives for around $100 and a usb 2.0 enclosure for around $50. If you want to be extra cautious/paranoid get 2 or 3 HD/usb combos. Mirror your data, once a month, once a week, however often you need to feel secure. I keep one hooked up all the time and backup weekly, I also keep one at work (with same data), I bring it home on Thursdays and take the other one to the office on Friday. You can automate the procedure with back up software, sync software, etc. so you just have to unplug one & plug in the other. It gives you redundancy (3 drives) along with fire protection and theft protection. Chances of all three drives failing at once are slim to none. For even cheaper (however, no hot swap) you can do as Arbogast (above) suggested, removeable hard drive bays, which is easy but you have to reboot (pain in the butt) when switching drives unless you spend $$$ and get hot swaps.
