Oops! Your new IDE chipset doesn't have drivers in the kernel we made, so we're not able to mount the CD-ROM that you booted from! But just to make things more fun, you'll get an error message that gives you no clue to the problem!
Not to mention all the fun trying to get Ubuntu working properly with the D830's trackpad and not having random clicks from just scooting around the screen. I have never been impressed with GUIs under Linux... they always work fine on the hardware that the developers use, but need not just command-line fixes, but command-line + hours-of-googling fixes on the hardware that _I_ try to use.
FYI the D830 was for work, and I normally use OS X. It's bullshit like this (and that damn X-windows 3-button copy/paste) that keeps me on OS X. When I do use Linux, I stick to the command line. Only recently have I considered moving up from Slackware to Debian, and that's because I got hooked on apt-get in Fink.
I think he's talking about how I disabled Java in my web browser two weeks ago, due to the report of some asshole figuring out a way for (cr)applets to take over your browser to make even more annoying adware... and haven't noticed the difference!
Now when is Adobe going to change their stock ticker to FLSH?
They may not have a product _named_ SUCK, but they do have the ZUNE. That's got four letters and describes Microsoft almost as well as JAVA describes Sun.
It's more fun when updatedb kicks off at 4AM... and you're sleeping next to the computer. There's nothing quite like the rattle of a find command to startle you awake from a deep sleep.
You've got a good point. I'm going to turn off Java in my Mozilla and see what the result is. I can't remember the last time I saw java-man showing that the plug-in was being loaded, and I blame Flash. Flash is faster to load the plug-in, and it supports lots of graphical and multi-media stuff inherently, not as an add-on library.
...for me until I submit my job on a VT-102 sitting in the drafty basement of a computer lab and then come back later after a dinner of Chinese food to get my green-n-white bar printouts from my cubby.
Easily done. All you need is a Keyspan USB serial/parallel adapter, a VT-102, a MacBook, a dot matrix printer, a few cables... and of course a drafty basement. A Xyplex or Cisco 2511 is optional.
and there's also an issue with the case-insensitivity of HFS+
And that issue is? Not having a Linux with HFS+ volume handy, I presume that the case insensitivity is handled in the VFS. The only times that case sensitivity has ever been an issue for me are 1) some joker decided it would be funny to name a couple of Linux kernel source files with the same name in different cases, and 2) when I try to rename a file using 'mv' to just change case with mv aliased to 'mv -i', mv thinks it's the same file and asks me to confirm.
#1 is just plain bad form to name files like that, and #2 is harmless.
Hey great! Will it also have a mood detector and choose appropriate songs from your playlist? With a learning feature that can monitor your mood during playback to improve its choices? Damn, I better go buy some Apple stock right now!
I got one with the thought that there was no downgrader in sight for the 3.51 firmware, which would most definitely be shipped on the new model. Mine came with 3.40, and I've upgraded it to 3.50 as part of the downgrade process, which is stalled until my friend who has a copy of Lumines remembers to bring it.
PROTIP: hay noobz you only need to use it once, no need to hog all the copies of Lumines out there!
I got mine at a Target store, but if you have an FYE in the area, you might want to check them out, because they have a $30 rebate going right now. (I didn't know until a week later because FYE is in the mall, and I don't go in there very often.)
Except that lately, even their anime is sucking. (unless you happen to enjoy cardboard cutout fanservice series, that is) It started about three or four years ago, and while there have always been a couple of good series, they are getting pretty thin.
Right now it looks like mainly just Lucky Star, and Oh Edo Rocket (which is getting severely neglected by fansubbers, at 2 episodes subbed out of 16 so far; looks like it's time to find some raws). And Blue Dragon may not be the best series, but I've been watching that too.
However, were he to encounter a game where you play as Romeo, and no matter what you try you and juliet both die, then is it not art?
Hey, Aeris always dies in FF7! ART!
One might argue that modern RPGs full of cut scenes should be considered as art with a bit of sport as a diversion between the cut scenes. Even when there are choices that affect the outcome, such games still have a limited number of outcomes.
I think/. posters underestimate how important the ability to play DVDs was to many parents buying this for the kids. They either didn't have a DVD player (early in the console cycle) or they already had one, but wanted a spare for the kids' TV (later in the console cycle)
The problems with the PS3 having Blu-Ray vs the PS2 having DVD are that:
1) IMHO the PS3 came way too early in the Blu-Ray lifecycle, while DVD had been around two years before the PS2, when the hardware costs for DVD were not stratospheric,
2) DVD was an uncontested format when it was released, while the future of Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD is not certain, and
3) would parents feel the need for a spare Blu-Ray player for the kids TV, which is 99% likely not to be HD?
Federal Acquisition Regulations? Curse those Ferengi and their Rules of Acqusition!
Give me a week's vacation in France, and I can probably come back with a dozen old Minitel modems.

I'm waiting for the Science Fair Scheduler. And the ladies out there might want to try the Vanity Fair Scheduler.

Their OpenFirmware/OpenBoot/IEEE 1275 identifier is also SUNW.
Nope... AAPL -> IPOD of course.

It's a week and a half later, and I haven't noticed any difference. Bye, Java!
....if any sane court had made the ruling. The 9th Circus can hardly be considered a sane court. That's what I was thinking too, but you know even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
Because people keep telling me that I've "won an internet" all the time.

The BBC already had armed robots, with a bonus real cool voice that says "EX-TER-MI-NATE"!

Just imagine what Yomiko Readman could do with that paper!
As long as they don't hide keys behind terminals where you can't search for them.
