For the NES, with fast paced games like Super Mario Bros, the correct "pro" way to hold the controller was with your thumb angled over both A and B buttons so that you could accurately press either button or both buttons. This allowed "twitch"-like reflexes. Using two fingures with the controller was far less common, and would give serious carpel tunnel symdrome to whoever tried playing like that for extended periods of time.

SuSe is a more polished and solid desktop Linux than Mandrake. Personally, I prefer more work upfront for ease of system care later on, so I use Debian. Installing Debian is more involved than other distros, but once you get everything setup correctly, you are done until you need to build a whole new computer. Upgrading Debian works, and is trivially easy, unlike other distro upgrades.

  17. Re:Which distro to choose, then? on Mandrake, SuSE Ready New Releases · · Score: 2

My opinion, if you want a RPM based distro, go with SuSe, and if you want the tightest, most sophisticated distro, go with Debian.

Once Debian gets a user-friendly OS installer, it will be more of a user-friendly distro than any other distro out there! Aside from the initial OS installation, Debian is extremely easy to use, maintain, upgrade, add/remove software too, etc...

If you correctly install Debian, which only has to be done once, then you are home free. Upgrading to a new version is a snap, adding more software is easy enough a 5-year-old and an 80-year-old could do it. If you are really committed to Linux, then I suggest that you take the time to learn how to correctly install and setup Debian... do that just once, and then rest back and enjoy free software for the rest of your life.

  21. Anime in the USA (i.e. "Cartoons") on DragonBall: The Live Action Movie · · Score: 4, Insightful
(Bias alert! I am a natural born USA citizen.)

In the following, by anime, I mean cell animated stories.

Making live action versions of classic anime in the USA is due to the common USA view of animation in general. As far as the average Joe is concerned, "cartoons are for kids" basically sums up the attitude towards anime.

One great example, which I recently bumped into is an old review of a classic anime movie "Grave of the Fireflies", where the reviewer has the movie listed under the headline "For Children". Anyone who has seen this movie knows that while it can be watched by children, it has so much emotional content that only a mature viewer could truely appreciate it. While "Adult Film" or "Film for mature audiences" in the USA means porn, it should mean movies like "Grave of the Fireflies". Again, I am not saying that "Grave..." isn't a movie that kids should watch - I am saying that giving it a headline "For Kids" is very silly.

Anyway, my main point is that in the USA, anime doesn't have the prestige that live action movies have. Somehow, I guess, movie execs think that making a great anime movie into a live action movie, somehow makes it better. Whatever... Its too bad because the average Joe is missing out on some great entertainment such as (my recommendations for the "average joe" slashdotter that isn't into anime but wants an introduction):
    • Ghost in the Shell (DVD): This is a roughly 1.5 hour movie, its Neuromancer mixed with Blade Runner. The English dub of this is good.
    • Serial Experiments Lain (DVD): This is an animated series of around 13 episodes 30 minutes each. It is a great neo-cyberpunk story. I would say its Neuromancer meets the X-Files - though these analogies are very crude. Also, stay away from the English dub of this series. Its awkward to say the least. The DVDs let you choose dub or subtitles, so go subtitles with this anime.
    • Cowboy Bebop (DVD): This is an animated series of (I can't remember how many) 30 minute episodes. Cowboy Bebop has a lot of everything for everyone. Comedy, action, violence, cyberpunk, mystery, drama, weirdness, etc... This is easy watching anime if that makes any sense. Its got style, thats for sure. The English dub is good, and I recommend it. Also, I recommend that you watch at least the first 4 episodes before drawing your opinion on this fine anime. Its not until then that you start to see the deep underlying plot of the entire series. Cowboy Bebop has lots of sugar and spice, bells and whistles, etc... but it also has a nice strong plotline.
The Blockbuster Video stores around my area rent anime. I don't rent, but buy, so I don't know if their selection is good or not. Its worth renting the above recommendations this weekend, if you haven't already seen them.

I suggest that every slashdotter download and use this build for at least a week straight... regardless of whether you already have a good browser or not. Personally, on Linux, I prefer Konqueror, but one sure way to help browser development and the internet is to use browsers besides Internet Explorer / Netscape. Let the world know that other browsers exist! Also, you can't make an accurate decision on a piece of software, unless you use it for day-to-day tasks. So download a copy, install it, surf your typical sites for a week, and then send bugs reports to the developers, write reviews, etc... However, don't write a "review" based on 30 minutes of "real world" use. No lame benchmarks either. Just surf with it. Try to forget what brand browser you are using. If you can't, then there is something wrong with your browser. Thats when I realized that Konqueror was truely becoming a solid browser... when I was surfing the web for about 8 hours with it, and I forgot that I was using Linux... forgot that I was surfing with konqueror... then I got off of my PC, stepped back, and realized that - hey, it worked pretty well!
