Am I the only one who thinks that Nautilus is really ugly? It looks like the window manager has a seperate theme from the menus, and the menus have a seperate theme from the actual body. And do you know how SLOW its going to be loading EVERY SINGLE FILE before displaying it? Thats pictures, text files, etc.
I am in no way a microsoft fan but I'm afraid microsoft has it right with Explorer. You click on My Computer, it opens up instantly, no bloat. You want to use the web, type a web address, THEN it loads up web components. Same thing with BeOS. The tracker is very efficient and small, and gets the job done. I'm beginning to feel like it isn't worth it to open up the file manager in KDE/Gnome to copy a few files since its 10x easier in a shell.
What do you guys not understand? Trolltech has it the way it should always be. If you're going to use it to make free software, it's free. If you're going to use it to make commercial software, you pay. Sounds fair to me.
Also, Qt Free Edition will ALWAYS be free. Repeat with me. Qt FREE EDITION WILL ALWAYS BE FREE. If Trolltech gets bought out and stops developing Qt, the KDE team can release it under the BSD license. Thats what the Free Qt Foundation is for... 2 members from Trolltech, 2 members from the KDE team, the KDE team having the tiebreaker vote.
Some of you guys are suggesting that Trolltech release Qt under the LGPL. Currently, Qt is Trolltechs only product. You want them to starve just so you can have your "freedom"? We already have it. QPL fits the definition of free software.
THE MORAL OF THIS LESSON: If you don't like it, then don't use it. Bitching about its license doesn't change the fact it's the best damn desktop environment out there.
He made the point that because Linux is based off Unix, which was made in 1976, it has to be obsolete. One of the main advantages of Linux/Unix is that it can adapt... but it still keeps the roots to it that makes it such an awesome Unix-based operating system. Just because we kept the Unix standards, and don't re-invent the wheel every single time we create a new OS, doesn't mean it is obsolete. It means its been tried, and it is true. He seems to forget that...
I believe it would be around $600 dollars. Remember, add the wonderful $100 dollar Windows tax. Also, its not just that it "isn't windows", it's the ideas/morals behind free software. He believes in it, he makes a living off of it, he doesn't feel like doing something against it. Some of us feel real strongly about it... jeez.
Also, I'm not going to comment on win2k behing a worthwhile product...
I find your comment so ungracious it really disturbs me. You don't even know how much work goes into sites like these! And despite how much money Andover paid for slashdot, CmdrTaco and Hemos really _do_ control this site. If you don't like an article on slashdot, then go somewhere else.
Just because slashdot is a company gives it no "obligation" to satisfy the customer, they should only do that if they intend to keep their customers and make money. I personally liked this story alot, as I love linux. I think it is kind of cool that the editors have at least a little bit of penguin "spirit", if you will. The day that slashdot becomes totally corporate overtaken and only posts stuff totally and precisely on-topic and doesn't care a thing about what they're posting, is the day I leave.
One office suite I'm waiting for is KOffice.. it shows alot of potential. The only problem they're facing now is lack of developers on some of the programs, such as KWord. It's all native to linux, all open source, all fast and efficient. What more could you ask for?
Part of the post got cut off. He was referring to the ILOVEYOU virus when he said the VBS script. I have no idea why he added that, but if he was calling the hotmail hole a VBS script, he would of said "is a VB macro" instead of "a VB macro".
You know it must be slashdot if we have to spend time deciphering CmdrTaco's grammer instead of looking at the point of the post:)
You are so blind. When RIAA doesnt meet profit margins, they use this "horrible piracy" as a scapegoat.
(Whiney Scrapey Voice): Well, we would of made more money if those evil pirates weren't stealing all our money!!
How would they know? So basically, since every game out there gets pirated by warez dudes, when it isn't successful, they can just blame it on those god dang pirates! Thats why we didn't succeed! Yah!!!
Everyone can go around saying they would of been a multi-billionare if it wasnt for (insert here). Quit making excuses and actually stand up. You're grown up now (well... *cough*)
p.s. I know CD sales went up, just talking about in general... and if they didnt meet their goal
I really don't understand why they are so deadset on closed source. Are there any large advantages of closed source VIDEO DRIVERS over open ones? Open ones would get peer review and would probably get even more efficient/clean than closed source ones...
All that microsoft FUD about open source must of worked...
Obviously, you have never developed software on such a huge scale as the linux kernel. You add one thing, it breaks another. It's just basic fact. Before you start insulting the (majority) of people that give their FREE TIME to develop YOUR KERNEL, realize there is a lot more to programming than your simplistic view.
There is a fine line between symphathizing and understanding where they came from. What those two *killers* did was wrong, I think we have already established that fact. Ever think why they did it? Everyone just shrugs it off. Really, how many times have you, yourself, made fun of somebody just for being different? Imagine being ridiculed, on a daily basis just because you're different! Believe me, it will screw you up after awhile. It's kind of interesting how our schools promote being a star athlete and being popular while actual skills that will help you in life, (ie. computer skills) are ridiculed. That is the point they are trying to get across.
Another example of a technology ahead of its time.

Will Rambus Go Bust?
·
· Score: 1
I imagine, if RDRAM came out in 2003, it would of become the best thing since sliced bread. The same thing with OS/2, it was just ahead of its time. I feel kind of sad, because _WE_ are the people who are going to have to deal with SDRAM as it becomes obsolete, and then we'll have to beg intels forgiveness...:)
Now if only I could optimize gcc for rambus memory..:)
Good idea, but it is just not feasable whatsoever.
What would this tell all the script kiddies? That it's ok to do that? Heres a "practice" server, so when you attack yahoo next time, you'll take em down longer. This is what I see happening. It's just like making a shooting range of stuffed student dummys for the next columbine kids. Uh huh, that'll work.
I don't know if I'm the only one annoyed by this, but this is one of the things I _HATE_ about netscape the most. When I'm surfing through slashdot articles, and one of them has a link I want to check out, I click on it. Then when I click back after I have checked out the link, it loads up the WHOLE FRIGGING PAGE OVER (150+ K, ie another 15 seconds) and then it starts at the top of the page, forcing me to scroll down to where I started again.
This is one of the most ANNOYING "features" netscape has, and I just love when in IE I can just press back and it will take me back to the exact same spot on the page, and it wont reload the page. There needs to be an option for this.
Dont automatically assign any large company as a "monopolistic giant". Growth is _good_ , its what companys are designed to do. One thing that really gets annoying after a while is how everyone thinks monopolys = bad. No buts if or ands. Remember the old AT&T monopoly? Telephones were never the same after the government stuck its head in where it didnt belong.
Slashdotters need to remember to not be _so_ biased towards one topic (ie. microsoft) that you are totally ignorant to the other viewpoint. Understand both viewpoints, (you dont have to agree), and then you can talk.
Ever notice an activision trend with the games they have ported? Well... thats because there is one! WHY ARENT THEY PORTING MORE POPULAR GAMES? If they were following how large games were, they would of ported Diablo, Baldurs Gate, Starcraft, Unreal Tournament... etc... games that have gotten ALOT more sales and that are ALOt more popular. The only reason I have windows on my computer is 1) Diablo. 2) Nox. 3) Baldurs Gate Really, we are finally realizing we need to compete with EVERY SINGLE ASPECT of windows to actually become successful! If we just make an OS that has excellent spreadsheet applications but everything else is nonexistent, uh, we have a problem. Right now, linux gaming is almost nonexistent. If it wasn't for companies like Noki we would be ever farther away from nonexistent, so don't take this as a flame towards Noki. If Noki started listening to people and poring better games.. then we'll have something to work with.
I highly recommend Dibby.com... They are fast (on the same backbone as yahoo) and relatively inexpensive (14.95 a month) Some highlights of dibby.com 200 POP E-mail Accounts 300MB Server Space Unlimited Traffic Unlimited Auto-Responders CGI-BIN Anonymous FTP Secure Server Daily Backups And alot more... I have had _zero_ problems with them. Great service.
How much cheaper? No average joe is going to put out $900-1000 bucks for a 15" LCD screen. I would rather get a 21" Viewsonic for 600. LCD Might not get very popular if the prices dont go down... same thing with rambus memory. (Besides all the defects in intels design)
I think it's time some company came together and made a sort of "WinLinux". A linux that, in theory, can operate just as user-friendly as windows can, but with the power of linux backing it up. Imagine a user-friendly OS that isnt so unstable you have to restart every 30 minutes! The future is here.:)
