    stonger sense of family? then why have they got the higest divorce rate?

    imho americans have got it all wrong. the indispensible college education burys everyone in debt before they even start their career .. they then work like dogs for the rest of their days, trying to meet a zillion interest payments while paltry holidays allow only for brief conjugal visits. meanwhile, they are oblivious to the orwellian police state they reside in, as they are constantly plugged in to the state run media, but still think they are land of the free.

    in my experience most women have this primordial drive to be mothers; but what i don't understand is why adoption is often used only as a last alternative for infertile or gay couples. there is a massive number of unwanted babies in orphanages around the world; and growing up unloved makes for a miserable life, therefore i applaud anyone who chooses to adopt.

    i'm dubious whenever a panel of 'experts' gets together to inform us what the best art is. how arrogant can you get? imo the oscars are just a excuse for everybody to flex their egos on tv and has nothing to do with aesthetics. and that goes for all the other awards too. but something like cannes at least has the benefit of promoting new directors.

    and while i'm at it, 2001 should have won! ; )

    the down sides you mentioned can be applied to many industries these days, it's more a result of things like mobile phones, and the faster change rate of technology.

    regarding the long hours, i'd venture to attribute that to the american work culture / ethic. american's work the longest hours in the world these days; they even overtook the japanese! i've experienced it, don't like it, but would like some insight into why they do this. anyone?

    your melodrama and condescension exude a sense of entitlement which has no place in the today's epoch of advanced capitalism. the bottom line is your credentials, experience and toolset, outside of those combined factors nobody in the real world gives a shit about your love of the subject.

    it's wrong to assume people who feel the 'love' have a deeper understanding. understanding is a function of intelligence, motivation (even money), and experience.

    i am currently working abroad on such an assignment and it was not due to high rank or seniority. in the organization i work foreign assignments are fairly commonplace.

    as for expat life, the individual is in complete control of whom and where he associates outside work. i've found that ease of cultural integration is more a function of attitude and effort than local conditions.

    that seems unecessarily risky to me. much preferable is to get a job with an international company and get an internal transfer; then you get to keep your income and stuff. this page on developing an international career is helpful.

    i think we can expect european countries to shift policy toward the american model over the next couple of decades. the aging population combined with a shrinking pool of skilled workers and shrinking economies will cause the exorbitantly expensive state sponsored pensions, health care, and education to become unsustainable. we'll see things such as massive immigration of skilled labor, privatised universities and health care, rising age of retirement, and far less generation pension schemes.

    10 months ago inspiron 7000's were already old, what were you doing buying a 3800?!

    although the inspiron 5000's could be more durable, i think they do a good job fusing features with portability (at least better than thinkpad and viao. and although laptops are prone to wearing out, dell has quite a good service dept, they sent someone to replace my lcd within 2 days.

    diablo II sold millions, and with the additional profits from LOD, we're talking dozens of millions from diablo alone. nevermind the profits from war/starcrafts and other games.

    You are comparing PDAs like as if they were desktops. with 2 MB you'd be pretty suprised what one can do: once i figured out how to get another MB using the flash memory, i can now have the information of multiple publications (newspapers and magazines) in addition to the almost complete listings of all movies, restaurants, bars, clubs in nyc. how about generating dynamic directions to all these places by foot or subway? among other things .. a compass, mirror, a world map with 5000 cities, etc.
    yeah, you convinced me to go back to my paper organizer ...

    i take issue with your claim that palm freeware is "crappy". both ... vindigo and avantgo are extremely useful free tools. the former is available for palm only.
