  1. Re:how does ANYONE benefit from a PS5? on Next PlayStation Is Three Years Off, Sony Says (wsj.com) · · Score: 1

Graphics look the same between PS3 and PS4. What is another order of magnitude of cores going to do?

It's not just graphics, although the PS4 definitely looks better than PS3 when connected to an expensive TV. The extra processing power also enables games to provide better quality of life. The PS3 classic Dark Souls routinely went below 20 FPS, while PS4's Dark Souls Remastered is three times smoother at 60 FPS. The PS4 version of Valkyria Chronicles loads three times faster than the PS3 version.

  2. Oh wait, no, SOMEBODY DID do it: Steam. If you install Steam for Windows, Mac or Linux I think you can run any Steam game exactly the same on any of the three.

Nobody has created a Steam word processor or a Steam photo editor... but I can't see any compelling reason not to.

Steam apps are not cross-platform unless the developer builds support for that platform into their app. Most Steam games run only on Windows.

The human eye's resolution depends on how far away you expect the screen to be. A VR display, which takes up your entire visual field, could easily use 8K or 10K resolution for an appreciable increase in quality.

  5. The parts of the brain that most of us would like to be technologically enhanced - memory, facial recognition, mental math - are very poorly understood. Even if we had a device allowing us to fire neurons on command, we have no idea how to write a program that helps with these problems.

Musk is smart to focus on medical applications, where even an implant that functions poorly is much better than the alternative. It's a lot easier to make a pacemaker than to perform a heart transplant, and the same holds true for the brain.

  6. The PC exclusive Ashes of the Singularity is a standard in graphics benchmarks, including the one from the article. Even clearly console-oriented games like Dark Souls 3 are significantly better in graphical quality, framerate and load times with expensive hardware like this.

The men of Sodom were certainly sodomites, but that's not why their city burned.

A side-scroller probably wouldn't improve your peripheral vision at all, because your eyes are generally focused on the right side of the screen rather than the center. A first-person shooter or racing game, on the other hand, requires you to look at the center of the screen fairly often but also to be alert to quick developments on the edge of the screen. Of course, you'd have to be very close to the monitor to actually exercise the edge of your vision in this way.
