The farmer does know that he's selling a lot more tomatoes to stores in Austin than he sells to stores in Houston
If the farmer only sold and delivered to a single place that's all that farmer would know. Same goes for the musician.
She may be entitled to the info on her transactions. But she is not entitled to info on other people's transactions.
So if this musician wants to know more details she should: 1) find a store that is willing to tell her (whether for free or for compensation) 2) sell to different stores 3) sell directly 4) do a survey
When I boot into my Win7 installation I have to wait about 10 minutes for the hard drive to stop thrashing before I can do so much as click on an icon.
What are you starting up? 1000 different malware? Vendor crapware?
FWIW on Windows XP if you don't install any antivirus and you want faster boot+login times you have to configure XP to not check for existing AV. Otherwise seems it will spend time and resources checking and then warn you if it can't find any. Not sure if that's true for Win7 (I've never had win 7 boot time probs).
Bullshit. Why should getting something in exchange for the money automatically mean the data is half hers?
She's got the data on whatever she has sold directly.
If she doesn't want to incur the costs of selling directly then why should she automatically get the benefits of selling directly to the customers?
The supermarket and grocery store knows who is buying their stuff and where. If the farmer wants to know where each tomato is going, the farmer is going to have to pay for it. Or set up his/her own store.
From the 1980s (space shuttle etc) onwards there wasn't much of progress in aerospace. Much of it was basically reruns with some newer tech. Billions were spent on the space shuttle[1] and ISS.
As I already said:
FWIW we don't seem to be making that much progress on the aerospace front either - where are those prototype space stations with artificial gravity?
You may also notice that modern passenger jets generally are flying slower than the old passenger jets. But a lot more efficiently of course (there still is some progress).
[1] The space shuttle did have a feature that cheaper launch tech didn't have - it could bring big stuff back down intact from orbit. But was it worth the cost?
If it takes 10-20 years to get this improvement it's not what I call rapid progress.
In 1947 Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier. 1953 first supersonic fighters (USSR and USA). In 1961 Yuri Gagarin orbited the planet. In 1969 the USA landed people on the moon AND got them back safely. In 1969 we got Concorde and the 747 jumbo jet. That's rapid progress.
With the current rate of BCI progress most of us will be either dead or too old by the time practical and safe ones hit the market.
FWIW we don't seem to be making that much progress on the aerospace front either - where are those prototype space stations with artificial gravity?
Maybe all the geniuses in the current generations are busy making iphone apps or legally swindling people in finance.
I think the brain has to also create a model from those rules.
Being able to model/simulate the world is important when you want to predict what could happen next. And also helps you decide what to do for a desirable outcome.
Sufficient levels of recursive self-simulation might result in consciousness - or might not, who knows?:).
But itâ(TM)s so cheap overall that it still doesnâ(TM)t contribute as much to the USPS as First-Class mail. And thatâ(TM)s despite the continuously declining popularity of sending stamped envelopes through the mail.
So the big question: is junkmail profitable enough for the USPS? Would increasing their charges help?
Different from this case, since the court established that the parents told their son to NOT do the stuff.
Whereas if the court decided that the parents somehow influenced the kid to do the stuff whether directly or indirectly the judgement could be very different.
If you're not one of the very powerful don't expect to get away on a weasel technicality if the judge doesn't think you deserve to. "I didn't tell my son to do it, I wrote a ROT13 message and he happened to stumble upon it, decrypt it and do the evil deeds" isn't going to fool the judge.
Of course what will happen is teenagers will be spending more of their time sharing music, and as a result hopefully less time stealing and breaking stuff. Which is fine by me. And if I were in the music industry, I'd want the kids to be sharing my stuff not other stuff. I'll get the money from them later when they actually have money.
Some types of thinking are done more easily in a human language, whereas other sorts of thinking don't require a language at all - deciding whether to eat something does not require knowing a language.
But I disagree that we are language neutral. Language affects thinking. Language affects what you can easily remember after you think it.
Some concepts/thoughts are more easily expressed in some languages. If you have no word for a concept/thought, it is harder for you to rethink it even if you managed to think of it the first time. You have to assign a word or other symbol to it, or take extra effort to remember it.
If you have not assigned a symbol to a concept/thought it makes it a lot harder to build on top of it. If you have no words for pleasure and enjoyment, it would be harder think of the "schadenfreude" concept.
Whereas once you know the symbol/word/phrase for something, you just have to think of it, then the thought pattern/concept is brought to your mind. Just like thinking of chocolate and bring various thoughts to your mind. This compression and decompression of thought to and from symbols is how some thinking is done. The symbols may evoke emotions, and the emotions may then influence our decision.
To provide an extra incentive for teams to work quickly, the grand prize value will change to $15 million whenever a government-funded mission successfully explores the lunar surface, currently projected to occur in 2013.
Yeah they might need a bit more precision and low latency control for certain games.
But don't underestimate what can be done with a few "buttons" as long as the latency is low enough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lx24B6RwekQ Broly (guying playing with his face) is playing Chun-Li vs Daigo (one of the top SF players in the world).
Perhaps. I hope to improve eventually.
As for miserable and nasty. Well I'm sorry if saying something is bullshit made you sad or upset.
Perhaps you can suggest an accurate replacement word?

You could also flip the question around and ask what Linux stuff is keeping you from using Windows?
So why not run Windows and use Linux as a virtual guest. That way you can play Windows games AND use whatever flavour of Linux you prefer.

We haven't actually come very far.

Next time try writing/drawing the answer down with both hands (not necessarily at the same time).
Maybe one of your hemispheres or pathways is blocked but the other might not be.
Given your experiences was it really you who came up with your slashdot nick? Are you the owner of the brain or the tenant? ;)
I wonder how much it costs to have enough solar panels and batteries to run AC for at least one room.
The batteries are for night time (yes it can still be too hot in some tropical humid places at night).

Does that mean getting rid of waste heat is going to be even more important?
What's the efficiency like?
It should be easy to give it a soul- if humans have souls, many animals are likely to have souls too. The difficult bits are ethical and cost.

It all depends on whether the 5x power is active or idle and whether you can return to idle state very quickly.
