Nail on the head here. I used to watch Hulu on Boxee through my Apple TV, until Hulu killed it. So when I had guests over earlier in the week and we wanted to watch a show on hulu, I simply plugging the DVI out from my laptop into a DVI->HDMI changer, right into my TV. A few seconds later, I had Hulu playing in full-screen on my TV in the living room.

So what did they accomplish except annoying me? Absolutely nothing. They also seem to have forgotten that the lines between computer monitors & TVs are becoming blurred all the time. I have friends using 42" displays as their monitors, with a PC right in the living room. Hulu (and by extension, Fox, NBC, etc.) just don't seem to get it here. If they're making their content available for free online, people will find ways to watch it when & how they want. Constantly trying to work around that will only serve to piss off your user base.

Instead, we have to follow the rules implemented by management, usually non-IT management. So while the code change itself might be all of 10 minutes, we have to follow Six Sigma, or have all changes go through 3 weeks of requirements gathering, or have to follow some horrible process workflow like the Waterfall model because they read about it in CEO Magazine.

And why on earth would Microsoft suddenly give in and embed other rendering engines? That's not something the dominant browser does, that's something that a low-share browser does to help with compatibility, ala Netscape 7.

I don't buy it. Furthermore, the article is light on details, has some dubious screenshots, and was published just before April Fools' Day.

Don't come into this expecting 300: This is a crime thriller, not a beat-em-up movie.

Are you sure about that? Because the film that I saw had loads of slow-motion wire-fighting and unnecessary gore that was very, very close to the way 300 was presented, and not at all like the book.

This film gets a C- or D from me, depending on how annoyed I get. I don't mean to sound so pedantic, but, well, here are some examples of what bugged me:

    • In the book, Rorschach's rescue from jail was relatively quick, because Dan used the Archie screechers to deafen everyone and get them out of the way. In the film, this was a 10 minute wire-fighting slow-motion sequence with SS and Night Owl fighting off a few dozen prisoners.
    • When Rorschach finishes off Big Figure, they actually panned the camera back to the bathroom to show blood coming out along the floor. Do we need to be beat over the head like this? I think we can figure out that he's dead! About as subtle as rape, that scene.
    • Speaking of lost subtlety, why did Dr. Manhattan have to tell Laurie that her dad was The Comedian? I'm fairly certain we could have figured this out from the preceding context! Again, beating us over the head.
    • Silk Spectre jumping through the roof of the on-fire building, only to...wait for it, open a window and escort people onto Archie. Why did she even bother going in? They couldn't open the window themselves?
    • Archie doesn't have screechers or a water tank, but does have a 16-barrel minigun.
    • Janey Slater actually shows up at the TV studio when Roth starts accusing Manhattan, revealing that she's lost most of her hair, and is seemingly in on the plot to frame Jon, instead of coming across like another pawn in Adrian's scheme.

They just couldn't keep the Hollywood out of it. Gone is wit and character development. And frankly, I don't know why they changed the ending. They could have easily kept it in. And don't tell me it was for time constraints, because they could have got back almost 30 minutes by cutting out the unnecessary martial arts in slow motion!

Meh. That about sums it up. If you were really into the graphic novel, you're probably not going to like it very much. I honestly wouldn't even recommend seeing it, that's how little I enjoyed it. They took Watchmen and turned it into The Matrix Part IV.

Plus there's the whole issue of firmware updates breaking Boxee.

The one reason I want the AppleTVs though is that they're now supported as AirTunes speakers, which means that with an AppleTV in my living room & bedroom, I can play music through most of the house just by telling iTunes to use multiple speakers. They kill two birds with one stone.

A few days ago, I was invited to the Union League in Philadelphia to see Mr. Gladwell speak to a group of roughly 550 local leaders, CEOs, etc. We were all provided with a "free" (in quotes because there was an entrance fee on all tickets, so the book was paid for by that cost) copy of his latest book and breakfast, and then afterward Mr. Gladwell did a Q&A session followed by a book signing.

It was the collaboration at the event, with people scribbling notes in the margins of the book, discussing certain paragraphs, and having the author sign each copy, that made me relish having the hardback with me. (Even if I do find his work a bit trite at times.)

In the end, I've opted not to buy this gadget, because ultimately, it's just not as satisfying or lasting as having a book. I have books given to me by my grandparents that they had as teenagers, what do you think the odds are that a Kindle or the formats it supports will last even two decades? The major issue I have with Hulu, South Park Studios, and this in Pandora, is not the existence of the ads themselves, but rather how the ads are presented in relation to the program.

I'm more than willing to accept the fact that to subsidize royalties, bandwidth, etc., we may have to hear/see an advert every so often. Fine, no problem. But for fuck's sake, can you at least NORMALIZE the blasted thing first?!

People don't like sudden, unexpectedly loud noises. If you're not going to normalize your ads to match the volume of the surrounding shows, then you're going to turn people off. My experience with Pandora's ads thus far haven't been good, considerably louder than the music before or after. I'm wearing in-ear headphones, it hurts when that happens.

At home, I'll be watching something on Hulu through Boxee on my AppleTV, I have the volume all set for the episode I'm watching, and then an advert comes on at literally twice the volume of the TV show, and now I'm diving for the remote control to hit the mute button because a sonic boom was just created in my living room.

South Park Studios is particularly bad about this, their ads for GT4 or whatever racing game are so loud and obnoxious that I now instinctively mute my TV the second its time for a commercial break. I'm not watching or listening to the ad now, because their volume control (or lack thereof) has turned me off for good to their ad stream.

Back in the early days of Firefox, when it was still Phoenix/Firebird, the first plugin I ever installed was "Nuke Flash", a handy little thing that removed a flash object from the page. Why did I do this? Because some cock got it in their head that a banner advert should play MUSIC or obnoxiously loud sound effects when you accidentally mouse over it! And if someone sends me to a website that starts talking/playing music the second I arrive, I'm never going back there again.

So fine, if you must have ads in Pandora/Hulu, etc., please make them so it doesn't sound like Al Pacino is yelling into my ears with a bullhorn. Thanks.
