  1. Pino sucks on Sony's New Bi-Pedal Robot · · Score: 1

If you ever saw Pino in action you would take that back. Pino is an incredibly unstable platform, hardly capable of holding itself upright. Walks like it has "the shakes". Hardly can walk in any direction beyond forward and back. Arms can move, but its incapable of holding anything in its hands. Pino is a toy. Sony's robot is a complete work of engineering art.

Plus it features a 160x120 full-color screen, full iMode functionality, 100 minute talk time and a wired LCD stick remote (displays song titles and phone numbers) for operating music playback and basic phone functions without taking the phone out of your pocket! Its been selling since the beginning of Summer 2001 in Japan.

  10. Articulating joints? on Spherical Motor Creation · · Score: 1

I don't understand the point of having such a wide range of motion if your still limited to how you pass power and control to the other articulating segments in something like a robotic limb. Induction might be the solution to transferring power, but I don't know how that might effect that might have on these speherical motors. Low torque really has an impact on the usefulness. The only practical application I can see is perhaps force feed back mice & exoskeletons, virtual terrian surfaces, and direct drive systems for mobile robots. The other drawback is the complexity of control. You would need either a high speed computer or at least a custom programmed FPGA for controlling each joint.

...you failed to even mention the real star of this movie...Zhang ZiYi. Zhang ZiYi has, by far, the most screen time, does most of the fighting, and the best acting in this film. Yet this is her first movie performance. (Can she get better than this???) This 19 year old has the beauty of Gong Li and can kick but with the rest of them.

The reason why Mr Katz, and every other critic, failed to recognize this, is because they're too busy paying attention to the performace of the well established actors to notice the new guy.

I had the rare treat of accidently getting sold tickets online to see this film on Metreon's IMAX screen Thursday at midnight. When I noticed there was no line, I asked an attendent and he said the tickets were sold to me by accident. I complained with the manager and he let me and 2 friends watch the movie in an IMAX theater alone, while the two Sony engineers were doing a dry run to see how it would look, since the movie wasn't designed for IMAX. A whole IMAX theater to ourselves...WOW. It had some issues, like slightly being curved along the outer edges, but the picture was so big we didn't notice once the film started. Plus we got to the the Final Fantasy Trailer in IMAX as well. A real treat.

As an American, I am shamed to be living on the same continent as all you ignorant fucking racists. Who are we to judge wether another country deserves high-speed access? Funny how these same ignorant people have no idea how little of the real-high tech shit never makes it to the US. Anyone who has been to Japan and regularly follows their technological innovations knows how behind the times the US is in terms of bringing technolgy to market. It actually disgusts me. Every Asian and European country, including Mainland China, has far superior wireless availabilty. How many LCD / PDP TVs do you see in the US? How bout Digital VHS? Recordable DVD video machines? Cellphones with color screens+video conferencing+on-demand MP3 music+GPS+64/128kb data native at half the weight of your so called "minature" US cellphones? What country has DVD+TV+GPS navigation as standard equipment in 1/3 of their cars? Who makes game machines with 4x the performance of a maxed out PC at 1/4 of the cost? Whos the leader in robotic technology? I think I've made my point.

That earlier post by some "japanese citizen" regarding high-speed availbilty in Japan is either really ignorant or just likes making shit up. Prices are not nearly that expensive. ALL phone lines in Japan are ISDN! Every public phone in Japan has an ISDN jack. Its been that way for at least 5 years. Cable modems/DSL is available in Japan, but I have a feeling that flat rate 64/128kb wireless PHS data service that has been available for over a year and that any cellphone supports natively, will probably become the norm. NEC also has a flat-rate satellite based product just like DirectPC. So there's lots of options.

Several microdisplay semiconductor companys (Colorado Microdisplay / Kopin / IBM / Planar) created working prototypes of this, but left it up to OEMs to build and market the thing, which not one has done so far. Someone has to take the initiative, like Diamond with their Rio. I can't believe how saturated the market has become with these expensive, poorly constructed, geek toys. But its proof that the market is there. If you build it they will come. Any geek willing to justify the insane cost of solid state music players with their severly limited storage/runtime, can easily be counted as a future customer. Please InViso...take the initiative and bring these eShades to market, just like Diamond with their Rio, you'll be glad you did.
