  1. Re:And then amazingly in 2 years your engine fails on Handspring Hides Flash ROM in Handspring Treo · · Score: 1

Proper adjusting of fuel/timing maps will not cause your engine to fail. In fact, if done properly, even increasing boost pressure will not lead to premature failure.

It is true, in most cases you will be sacrificing fuel economy, or emissional quality. However, its often possible to gain horsepower by siming advancing the timing a bit. All that is required is to increase the octace of the fuel. So if your car makes 115 hp at 87 octace, you can have 120+ hp, if you dont mind the cost of 93 (if its available in your area).

The problems come in when some moron buys a pre-burned chip, or doesn't know what they are doing when they alter the maps (ie. not on a dyno).

Perhaps they are still renting enough tapes to justify the floor space. Or perhaps its due to the fact that what people want is only available on VHS, so thats why they rent them.

  4. Effort outweighs the gains on Hard Drive Performance - ATA100 vs ATA133 · · Score: 4, Interesting

This story hits far too close to home as I just spent the last two evenings attempting to install my Promise ATA/133 card, along with my new Maxtor 160gb drive.. and a new install of Windows. Although I had the most recent drivers, and specified them on install, Windows XPlod could not manage to complete an installation without a hard freeze, blue screen, or other nonsense. I tried with Linux, but only managed to lose my MP3 collection on my other drive. Windows 2000 finally did go.

I'm convinced that even if it yielded a 20% increase in performance it wouldn't be worth complicating my install, my boot time, my lack of slots on my board, etc.

Meanwhile, my lawn has grown out of control, and the trash is starting to stink from me neglecting my other tasks. My advice, ditch the controller for ATA133, and live your life.

  6. Reverse engineered Honda ECU code on Hack Your Ignition (Before Someone Else Does) · · Score: 1

I don't know much of the history, but the folks over at www.hondata.com reverse engineered the ECU in the majority of Honda's from the 1990s.

The program was then reengineered to allow for the modification of all the fuel maps, ignition timing maps etc. This allows tuners to bolt on parts, and change specifications without having the computer try to counteract the changes in the name of emissions and fuel economy. There is also datalogging built in which allows me to monitor all the sensors in the car. In my case, it allows me to run a supercharger on my Honda Civic with 8psi, and have it run RIGHT!

In my opinion, its far better than standalone engine management computers (such as MOTEC, etc) for daily driving. It allows us to take advantage of years of Honda development and research, and still tweak to our hearts content.

...and besides, I get to keep a laptop in my car ALA The Fast and the Furious (quite possibly the worst movie ever BTW)
