Corporations and organizations in general exist because when transaction costs become to high, it may become more efficient to conduct business within a hierarchical, rigid organization, rather than in a merketplace (read Coase "The Nature of the Firm"). While the whole "digital revolution" thing reduces transaction costs in some areas, I doubt it will ever make organizations obsolete in all areas of economy. For instance in healthcare or law, the relatinship between agents and principals is determined by the enormous information assymetries (read Arrow "Uncertainty and the welfare economics of medical care"). While they may be reduced to some extent, so far things like personal health records did not get much traction neither with patients, nor with doctors. Well, maybe we the information technology is just not mature enough, maybe we are not yet ready for it, maybe we will never be--and keep holding to the good old "trust relationship" with our doctors instead of shopping for them on the amazon. The point is, openness or closeness are not the ends in themselves, neiter are they good or bad. It is all the question of economic efficiency and common sense.
Where does this legend about the "European model of unlocked phones" come from? Here in Germany, most people I know get the same 2 year contracts with a phone bundled, like you do. There sure are prepaid phones, contracts without phones, and all kinds of phones without contract on the eBay. But last time I checked, the contract+phone bundle made the most economic sense. Guess it is the same in the USA. Anyways, a contract with or without a phone costs €20-€60, I don't think it is kind of money you should get upset about, much less running news on Slashdot daily about consumers being "raped" by the carriers.
More taxes mean more services that are excellence-certified with the word "public".
Wouldn’t it be ideal if all housing was like public housing? Well, that requires taxes. Wouldn’t it be ideal if we were all served by a nationalized health-care system based on typical municipal hospitals? That’s what taxes can do. Wouldn’t you be happier if your local supermarket was operated on par with the Department of Motor Vehicles? Taxes!
If he works for a salary, his boss effectively buys his time. It is only obvious, that the boss has the right to order him what and how to do. If he doesn't like it, he can become self-employed, do whatever he likes and how he likes it and then invoice his customers.
I don't think it matters whether it is talent, schmooze or something else that you lack. Money is a proxy for all these things and if you don't earn enough to buy a tool means you are doing something wrong and the tool probably won't help.
I think in this case, high pricing is actually benefitial, because if a tool seems too expensive, this most likely means your skills are not worth it. If anything, this prevents people from wasting their time.
"Evidence that we are changing our own atmosphere by fossil fuel emission is obvious just by looking."
this nonetheless does not imply that such changes have a nontrivial impact on the climate.
in other words, smog!=AGW. i would think this were obvious.
Now that we know the real root of the problem, thanks to your highly-moderated comment. Now if only we could stop Murdoch from running CNN, LAT and NYT...
Just because climate changes occurred before humanity existed doesn't mean we should not destroy western civilization, just in case. We shall not rest until we have a global climate junta.
I find the comments to the newest piece of gore's intellectual diarrhea (http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/1b1067b2-dacd-11de-933d-00144feabdc0.html) indicative of the public opinion on him ang his AGW scam cronies following the climategate. Too bad, so many of you guys here are entrenched in the leftist agenda because of FSF ideology.
I never used Gnome, or Linux for that matter, so out of mere curiosity, how can anyone thrust anything down one's throat with it being OSS? Isn't it the whole point of open source that vendors can't thrust anything down your throat as it is the case with Apple or Microsoft?
Bullshit.
"Vodafone has exclusive rights to sell the HTC Magic, but only in the markets they service." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_Magic)
From what I know, you can't buy it from anyone other than Vodafone in Germany.

If something isn't true, it doesn't make it a fallacy.

you are a hateful fear-monger. he should be paying $0! anything more than that is racist.
Is there anyone else here who eats fries because of the vitamins?

Also, liberals have problems with economics and linking actions to cosequences.

Murdoch?? Really?
And I thought the utter failure of journalists to report on the subjects that interest the broad population was the reason. Something along these lines: http://hillbuzz.org/2009/12/03/climategate-will-be-looked-back-on-as-one-of-the-last-nails-in-journalisms-coffin/
Or maybe these: http://whiskeys-place.blogspot.com/2009/06/failure-of-media-part-two-lingering.html

"If Linux didn't exist, this kind of licensing wouldn't be a big deal" For most people Linux does not exist, so it is, in fact, not a big deal.

And since this depends on your perspective, the whole point is invalid.
yeah, how can one be held responsible for his actions?
are you a racist?

Good for you, but what do you care whether someone uses win 7 or a mac? Both are quality products.
Actually, OneNote can search in images: "Powerful search capabilities can help you locate information from text within pictures or from spoken words in audio and video recordings." http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/onenote/HA101656661033.aspx

The "Intel SSD Toolbox" is also kind of unstable.
same here. SSD is a qualitative leap
