  1. Crazy Soap Opera's on Reiser Murder Case Gets Stranger · · Score: 4, Insightful

I always wondered where they got some of the crazy idea's for Soap Opera's, I don't wonder anymore. I really feel sorry for poor Hans, assuming he is innocent. This is a nightmare of unimaginable proportions. Even if he "wins", he will probably be bankrupt from paying the attorneys.

  2. Does this mean..... on Supreme Court Sides With Microsoft Over AT&T · · Score: 1, Insightful

that if I steal one copy of Windows, and make 1,000,000 copies of it, that I am only liable for the one copy? After all, since Microsoft only produced one copy. I am only depriving them of the use of one copy. The lawyers are going to have a field day with this decision.

  3. Why is it.... on French Voting Machines a "Catastrophe" · · Score: 2, Funny

Now for the scary thought, the people we trust to chosse are voting machines are making decisions about far more complex issues on a daily basis. I hate to say it, but we're doomed.

  4. One place vinyl absolutely beats CD's on Return of the Vinyl Album · · Score: 4, Informative

I own well over 1,000 pieces of vinyl, and many of them sound better than the CD. This isn't because vinyl sounds better, but because either the master was damaged or poorly remastered for CD. It is amazing how poorly mastered some CD's are. Digital recording does not compensate for an idiot behind the sound board, in fact it makes it much worse.

  8. Re:Give me a break on Serious Magnet Failure at CERN's New Accelerator · · Score: 1

I can't argue that Windows is incredibly complex, but what value is added for all of its complexity? As best as I can tell, Microsoft is using the US Government as a template for software design.

  9. Give me a break on Serious Magnet Failure at CERN's New Accelerator · · Score: 3, Interesting

The forces induced in these magnets during a quench is obscene. Given the size of the LHC, I would guess that these are the largest such magnets ever fabricated. When pushing the envelope so hard, failures are going to happen. It amazes me that the public's quality expectations are so high for such work. If Windows was built to the same standards, it would have uptimes measured in centuries.

  10. Spintronics is scary on Researchers Spin Out Smaller Electronics Than Ever · · Score: 3, Funny

    Don't have successful tech companies???

I guess I must be hallucinating when I look at the Siemens DSL modem I have, and then the Alcatel DSL equipment that fills the remote terminal down the street. I'll also have to ignore the Nokia cell phone. There is a lot of tech that comes out of Europe, and much of it is better than the American tech it is competing with.

There is a new drug, Tysabri, which appears to stop the progress of the disease a majority of the time, and in some cases partially reverse the damage. Take this with a grain of salt, but there have been stories of people walking who had been wheel chair bound for years. There were some issues with Tysabri, but it appears they were due to interactions with another drug. So far, when used alone, it appears to be working remarkably well. In addition, there are a number of drugs, currently in the pipeline, which may provide more ways to stop the disease. Finally, there is some light at the end of the tunnel for this terrible disease.

  13. Hope is coming on Life with a Lethal Gene · · Score: 1

Development of treatment for diseases such as this are on the horizon. Already, enormous progress is being made in the treatment of many related diseases using monoclonal antibodies. I can only hope that this disease is one of them. As it is, Multiple Sclerosis is finally being treated with remarkable success, Tysabri. Alzheimer's may soon follow. With enough research, Huntington's may be next.
