  1. Re:Can Oscar's be given posthumously? on Batman Discussion · · Score: 5, Insightful

    Well, kinda...

Ledger's Joker is based more on the comic series which always had the Joker as more of a psychotic than a jokester. Perhaps it was the Adam West series's softening of the character that gave the Joker that impression in the general public. In the 70's when the Joker became even a bit more grittier, and through the Dark Knight and similar gn's, the "darkening" of the Batman universe came to influence Dini, etc. in how they developed the character for TAS, though a bit softer still since it was a kids show.

Ledger's version is easily the closest to the original Joker concept of a true psychotic criminal, one who not only revels in his own altered version of the world, but finds the humor in the differences of what is considered our normal and what he considers normal, and uses that humor as part of his villainy.
Nicholson's Joker, while following closely to The Killing Joke origin of the Joker (and in my mind a weak cause for the level of the Joker's psychosis as required for the original character), was more along the lines of the 50's and 60's prankster Joker.

Either way, it will take a lot to find another actor who can come close to bringing the Joker to life in the same way Ledger did.

I don't program, but I've seen other people do things and in my imitation improve on what I learn, so I figure the same would hold true, whereas if you rely directly on being "copied" from one dog to the other, this learning and improving wouldn't occur.

I'm surprised noone pointed this out yet, but the study has a possible flaw in it. Its hard to say since I don't speak German, and the english version of the study hasn't been released yet.

    The news article says

One group consisted of 60 users aged 25 to 55 with computer skills but no prior experience with Linux or Windows XP

It does not say whether they have had prior Windows experience at all. XP is very very very much like 2000, ME and 98 when compared to KDE or Gnome. So if they had any prior experience with one of the older Windows versions they would have an advantage to understanding XP.

So we'll have to see. If this is the case the survey could very well tell a different story than what this article talks about.

I've sort of done an unofficial survey of the same type. My laptop sits in my apartment living room and runs KDE as the window manager. When friends come over its used as the random computer that we search for stuff on while watching tv. All my friends(more technically minded, we do go to a major tech university) have no real problem using KDE to do stuff(browse web, IM, type in Kate, etc). The major complaint is that they're not familiar with the icons or the program names when they first see them. Now everyone knows what the Firebird and Gaim icons look like though. I've even had a few friends sit and play with it for a while to see what its like.

Plus, I use XP at work (sadly) and I find it much more difficult to use and I used to run 2000 (I switched to linux after its release).

Also, KDE sort of "looks" like Windows, which people frequently find confusing, since it implies that it will act exactly like Windows, which it doesn't
wait, is he saying gnome looks less like Windows than KDE does? Looking at the screenshots of XD2 in the article, it looks just as much like Windows as KDE does. OK, so the default puts the K task bar on the bottom like windows, but I have mine at the top of my screen, and I have a running apps bar at the bottom too.

As far as options, the thing that pisses me off about Gnome is that I can't or its very difficult to change settings, which just pisses me off and I log back into KDE.

Plus, whats up with Gnome's file save/open box? That thing needed work 3 years ago...

That said, XD1 was awesome, and I'm definitly going to give XD2 a try, as soon as they have a Mandrake build.

Taken wasn't about the aliens, it was about the abductees. The reason the aliens were in it so little was because Leslie Bohem wanted to concentrate on the lives of the people involved in the "alien conspiracy". It was scifi because it involved aliens and they're "secret plot to take over the earth", but beyond that, it was, like any good scifi(ST:TNG) about the people, their experiences together, etc. Sure, it wasn't amazing in that regard, but honestly, I've never seen a film of any length that was. I thought, for what Taken was written to do, it did an excellent job. I'm glad it didn't get any more into the aliens, I was sort of dissapointed in the 9th episode until i figured it out, because I was afraid they were going to "reveal" too much about the aliens.
