The capability is there from the get go, but there is a set of files, IIRC, that describe each carrier and what features to allow. With a jailbroken phone, you can change that and allow tethering. This is why, say, UK users can tether but US users cannot.

Having suffered from depression for about a third of my life, there have been times where I truly felt undesireable at any level. The depression is (mostly) gone now, so it would be safe to assume jest on my part now, though.

There's that and the fact that there is a huge patent minefield out there. You have to be huge, yourself, in order for it not to destroy your business. How can smaller outfits release their own, more open devices? The patents kill them before release, locking them into inferior technology or forcing them to pay tribute to the patent gods.

If you think those industries are unregulated, then I would like to see what you consider to be regulated. I mean, once you have governmental control over the money supply, how much a bank can and cannot loan, etc., it becomes pretty hard to call it unregulated. Poorly regulated, perhaps, but not at all left to its own devices.

In the days of yore, where we still had to have physical media, it was much harder to survive without a record label. They had the cash, not only to produce your albums and advertise, but to get the media manufactured. With the rise online sales, you no longer need the middleman to get your records pressed; the cost to host an album is very low per customer. The middleman is starting to be cut out, and if he doesn't reinvent himself, he will fail. Personally, I think the way forward will see the artists keep copyright but share revenue with music stores in exchange for the publicity and bandwidth.

It depends on what you mean by capitalist. If by capitalist, you mean the current (and past) crop of business leaders and politicians, then you are correct in most cases. Those on top want to remain on top, and they will use whatever language available to maintain their position. Of course, the word has become distorted and made to mean so many things, just like the word socialism, that I find the term to have little value.
