Well, of course if you were selling them for $0.99 a song it wouldn't make sense. But what if you had an entire ipod of 40gigs of purchased music and you're willing to sell the whole thing for $1000.00 with a true value of up around $8,500.00.

    (40gigs / 5mb a song * $.99 a song) + $500.00 ipod = ~$8,500.00

    > OS X is what made me buy a few programming books and get back into things though.

Exactly. I started using computers when the XT (8088) was the "big daddy". I used DOS for years! I helped clients setup their DOS machines with menu's, TSR's (Sidekick), and several other things. These guys were "MULTI-TASKING" with XT's. People forget about how functional we actually were in DOS.

I had to be super familure with Windows because of the drive from the clients to have "WYSIWYG" programs. I hated windows. It made the general OfficeSpace less functional. People were playing network'ed hearts games, fussing with their back ground colors/pictures, sounds, etc... People learned how to waste time PLUS the operating system crashed like no other.

Anyway, to the previous poster's point.. I use computers EVERY DAY. I had never had a mac in my entire life and thought they sucked because the OS multi-tasked poorly among several other things. Now with OSX out, I have purchased several new computers and my wife has also began to enjoy using computers to GET THINGS DONE.

My wife hated computers because they were too much work to get anything substantial done. Not confusing, just too many steps and programs required to do anything.

Now she has an iBook OSX laptop. She has edited movies for her presentations for school, she has learned how to do video editing, rip/burn/download music, e-mail friends/family... etc... Until OSX, she had already used windows and grew tired of using computers for any purpose except the bare minimum for work.

As for me, I have fallen in love with doing projects at home again. Now that I don't have to rebuild my box every 6-8 months (windows & Linux)... Now don't go off and say "You shoulda' been using linux all this time instead of windows." WHATEVER. I gave Linux a run for it's money for almost a full year. I was sick sick sick of windows and went with linux. Man linux is WORSE than Windows. DLL HELL is worse on linux with all the share library projects. You goto install the latest "mozilla build" even though you had the latest 2 weeks prior you now need to get a whole new GDK and/or KDE library .. but to do that you need the new glibc, but to do that you need, blah, blah, blah....

Anyway... OSX is here... Sure the systems are more expensive, but you know, the hastle-less experiance is worth the money to me. The longer I can keep my sanity the better.

I work for a big corporate america company that everyone has heard of. I could confirm that the demands of the current business stradegy is to off load programming to india or any other off USA soil site.

In the past development of new products was always developed here with local people and then once a product became "steady state" or in a maintaince mode it was then sent off shore to have them maintian any code or product.

This new development of working with offshore sites to develop new products has been a bit of a hastle. The business loves it because it appears to save money immediately being cheaper per line of code or per hour, BUT there are huge gaps when trying to deploy or release this product into production.

One of the major problems is offshore people can hardly speak english. We've found ourselves needing to rely on local foreigners to either translate or attempt to speak better english. This makes implimentation time and working with the system administrators a much more drawn out process.

Until MS gets out of the proprietary file format business, Windows is not ready for the desktop.

Sure, I know you think that it is the windows people who are unfortunate enough to not be able to communicate to you, but 99.99% of the world thinks that you are the incompatible one.

Let me rephrase my statement then. Linux is not ready for the BUSINESS world. You are not able to communicate to other business people. Whether or not they're using proprietary formats or not. You (any linux ONLY user) are not able to communicate flawlessly with anyone in the business world. And Yes, MacOSX and Windows CAN.

On another note, doing simple tasks might be easy for YOU, but setting up just any random printer to print on linux is not easy. Sure, if you buy a specific printer, it works great... but not just any old printer out there works with linux. Also network cards, modems, sound cards, video cards, cdburners, dvd burners, raid controlers, etc.

Don't try to fill me with smoke either, I've lived it, I know. I tried using linux exclusively myself. I will not fall easily to the, "Linux is perfect." comment. I have lived the torment of trying to make beta drivers work, beta software work, work with recompiling libraries on a daily basis trying to get more stability and/or more hope for a better environment.

KDE & GNOME crash as much if not more than Windows 95. I'm sorry. I was happier in the days of Enlightenment, Window Maker, etc. Everyone bags on windows for not following standards, DLL Hell, and stability issues. Well, I personally will always bag on linux for lack of a consolidated, stable widget library API (ie qt & gtk don't cut it), LIBRARY HELL, and lack of good SOLID multi-processor support.

If you ever want to get into some of the latest applications, you spend HOURS updating libraries which seem to have endless dependancy trees.

Anyway, thats my rant. I wish all you fools trying to get linux as a desktop would just go away. Linux makes an awsome server and has done so for several years. I feel it would be MUCH further along in that arena if it weren't for the taintedness of endless efforts trying to make linux into a game machine and "friendly" desktop.

Throw Window Maker or Enlightenment back into the distros as the MAIN GUI and keep it as a friggin' coder/hacker's platform. Screw KDE/GNOME, OpenOffice (staroffice), Wine, etc.. All fun and dandy, but it's been almost 5 years now and I'm sorry, but they're still subpar.

Take away the GPL off linux/kde/gnome/etc and I bet wonders would happen in less than 2 years.

  9. Agreed on Brazil Mandates Shift to Free Software · · Score: 1

I'm sorry, but I tried to use ONLY OpenSource software for about 6 months not too long ago. It worked fine unless I wanted to actually communicate to the "real" business world. I ended up spending most of my time trying to make things work in Wine and updating my QT/GTK libraries. OpenOffice and other apps like it are nice, but don't work 100%. The business world can't affort that 5% incompatibilies. It works fine on a personal level.

Linux isn't ready for the desktop. If people would consolidate the efforts of ONE window manager instead of the breakoff between the KDE/GNOME it would be faster.

Also the GPL helps keep the software "FREE", but makes it so nobody can do with linux like Apple did with BSD. So linux will take much longer to refine and make a viable solution than any NON-GPL product.

Thats what I did first. I got a mac, tried it for 30 days and took it back because I didn't have the money to keep it. But It was the excellent chance to see if it was something that was over rated, or whatever. I loved it .. I ended up going back 3 months later and buying a Powermac 933MHz with superdrive and a viewsonic 19" monitor.

I will never go back to any other operating system ever again. Wherever OSX goes, I go. I like the apple hardware. It is rock solid. I don't have to play with mix matching different motherboards with CPU's and settings in the bios, and tweeks here and there... and different fans, etc.. it's all integrated, I spent 0 time on hardware issues and 0 problems with software not working with the hardware (ie driver problems, etc..)

    Its a dream come true.

It all comes down to what is more important to you. Is your time more valuable or is the money you save on the system more valuable to you? I have learned since switching to macs I have been 1000 times more productive. I do video editing, audio recording, perl scripting, c programming, bourne shell scripting, etc... Try to do all that on linux or windows and you're in a mess.

With windows you're either pirating a ton of software or you're spending a TON of money to do what you can do in OSX out of the box. On linux you really just can't do it unless your satisfied with the endless number of beta programs out there that crash more than windows itsself. It's getting there... SLOWLY.. and who knows if ever it'll be there.

My point is I've actually tried all the different routes for a computer system. Why don't you do the same and see what your results are.

Standard recording costs range between $40 on up to $200 or $300 an hour depending. But an average joe could record at a high quality studio for about $60 an hour. Depending on how good the band is you could do a whole album in one week at 12 hours a day. Thats $3,600.00 in recording costs. About another week to mix the album at 12 hours a day. Another $3,600.00.

Mastering of an album costs about $4000.00 at Gateway Mastering. Thats the best place in the world. CD Duplication for color inserts and other things it's about $1.00 each.

So it's like $12000.00 for recording, mixing and mastering and another $8000.00 for 8,000 cd's. So now we're upto $20,000.

But now you gotta' pay the "independant promoter" companies (which are subsiderary companies to the radio stations) lots of money to get it played on the radio. Thats an extra $10k.

So a total of $30,000 for a good band to pound out a great CD.
