Yes my friends this is your typical government Waste Of Money Brains and Time!
What is wrong you say? Well just suppose I went to my location and found some coverage. For me that would be wireless only as there is not cable or DSL within miles and that leaves only wireless.
Now I zoom it in and see it is covered. Big question is, covered by WHOM? I have guv'mint assurance that I can get it but no clue where to sign up. Thank you for nothing tax payers er bureau rats.
Seems to me the target for this stuff would be the un-served rural population. There are millions of us out here who will be dead and gone long before we get even DSL service. You are looking at huge areas with insufficient population to support any "for profit" service except possibly wireless.
That brings us to the infrastructure needed. You have to have towers, power, radios, antennas, and back haul. Just because you make the spectrum "free" and declare service free does not put the necessary equipment in place.
Maybe they will pay for it with the surplus funds they make from 0bama health care.
Several years ago, thinking it would be cool, I set about to put Solaris on a T22. Working for HP at the time so send me to see customer with my stinkpad running Solaris. Great stuff, after all it ran forever on a Sparc 10.
Installation was not a big problem. I think it even gave me X. However it did not recognize the built in nic and it didn't do PCMCIA and it didn't know what to do with USB. The only i/o was going to be serial or sneaker net.
Needless to say it didn't last long. I:heart: solaris, but put it on a platform it is made for. Put Linux on your laptop.
Come to America! Here we have one of the world's greatest telcos|pack of liars: Verizon, your "broadband and entertainment company," offering high speed internet for everyone!
NOT!
That 160kb would be a real delight here but all the renowned Verizon will sell me is POTS.
Cutting and hauling wood... Shoveling and stacking manure... Digging in the garden... Chopping and burning weeds... Clearing path thru brush... Repairing barns and fences...
Iffen you git around all of that, we'll come up with something more!
Right on. They ignore all the politicians who blew smoke about broadband everywhere in the USA. Out here in Verizon land we are happy to often connect at 24,000. Then VZW insults us by saying they are a "broadband and entertainment company!"
Not likely to see a usable cell tower real soon here. Trying Skyway and it goes 3x to 5x the speed of dialup. Clearly not even up to "1st generation" broadband.
Rural America needs to be connected just like we needed electricity 60 years ago and phone service 40 years ago. Maybe it will happen in our life time. How dare they forget us?
Very funny. I was in line first. Been there for 10 years.
Congratulations on your DSL. They won't even sell me DSL, and fibre to the curb is out of the question since it is 15 miles to the nearest curb.
Verizon doesn't care, and the won't. When our dialup went from steady-for-hours to a few minutes at best, it took us all kinds of hell raising over a number of days to get them to fix it. Now we are back to 24K dialup. Forget 33.6, and forget any notion of 53K.
Well, not quite. Yesterday I put up a skyway dish. Happy to say we are seeing something like 5x the maximum speed that I can get from my self-proclaimed "broadband and entertainment company," a company of liars.
Oh we will keep the landline all right. But it only does 24K. Faster not available. Verizon refuses to put it in.
Thus, all this connect-via-cell looks attractive. That is if I can figure out how to do it without breaking the bank. Also looks like I will have to put both cell phone and linux router up on the roof because we really don't have much signal. Ah the things gringos have to go thru to get some bandwidth.
You think that is bad? Ha! I got my definition directly from my "broadband and entertainment company," when they offered me "broadband for everyone." None other than Verizon. Invite them to sell me some and they respond, "Oh sorry, FIOS not available... Hmmm DSL not available 'in your area at this time.'"
To which I ask, "Fine since you offer broadband for everyone, what sort of broadband do you offer to me, your customer?" "Dialup, sir. Can we sign you up?" "Scuzzi? Dialup is not broadband!"
So you see we are not becoming the 3rd world of connectivity. We define it!
If I was truly in the middle of nowhere, it might be understandable. Here in middle of Texas, one exchange outside a major metro area, we connect at 24,000 if we are lucky.
Adopting broadband is moot. One cannot adopt what one cannot get.
Will have it downloaded in 20 minutes or so, but I really don't have to get it to understand.
Who is the bigger liar? The politicians or my "Broadband and Entertainment company," Verizon?
Fact of the matter is, here in one of the fastest growing counties in the USA, we have no DSL, no cable, no wireless. Oh Verizon offers some every month, like "Fast Internet for Everyone!" Their offer is false and fraudulent. A pack of lies.
Sparkle: You offer fast internet for everyone? VZW CS: Yes sir! Sparkle: What sort of fast internet can I get? VZW CS: Hmm let's see... Nope no FIOS. Wow no DSL. How about Dialup? Sparkle: Dialup is not fast internet! Kindly enter my order for DSL, please. VZW CS: Can't help you. Not available. Sorry.
It's like the situation if you bought a new car and were not satisfied with the "new car" aroma.
You went down and got an air freshener to make it smell better. Then when your brakes broke they say it was the air freshener???
C'mon! You just removed the stink of "Vista" and put a decent OS. Not a darned thing to do with the hinge. That ought to help you get their unfair stipulation voided in your friendly local court!
The demorats can spout all the nonsense they like. The Republicans can promise broadband for everyone. They are all full of it.
Sad fact is, broadband by any definition is NOT available to vast areas of the good old USA! I am not talking about mountains and deserts either. I am talking about one of the fastest growing counties in the US, only one Central Office away from a metro area.
The telcos take fees for "rural infrastructure" to the tune of millions and what do they do with it? Whiz it away screaming "We are your broadband and entertainment company!" Do they come thru? Absolutely not! Not for the last 9 years they don't and they won't. Sorry, DSL is not available in your area at this time.
So you see it matters not what the FCC says or the government does. The telcos FAIL and REFUSE to provide broadband, even at the slowest recognized "fast" speed from years ago. If we are lucky they keep the POTS line up and our 24K connection works.
Yes almost every month Verizon offers me DSL. Then they blow smoke about FIOS and tell me they are my "broadband and entertainment company" and when I say "Sell me some!" they always, always say, "Sorry it is not available in your area at this time."
Our service was a lot better before Verizon bought Continental Telco. Contel actually improved the infrastructure. Verizon soaks up millions of "Universal service fund" fees purportedly to improve rural service and does nothing to improve it. NOTHING!
For one I cannot wait. It will be great if they would sell my rural exchange because I know it will be a cold day in hell before they will sell me the broadband they claim to offer.
Did I mention how many days it takes to get a broke line fixed on Verizon?
That is what it is all about. Keep squeezing. Squeeze from all directions.
First insult with no raises for years. Insult by sticking victim in a stupid cubicle, then as it becomes prohibitive to commute, say we are not going to permit any tele-commuting. Let us not forget refusal to refresh a 4-year old laptop. HP would not have any available, would they?
Actually they want to terminate any/all compensation they provide for tele-commuting. That would be a high speed connection. If you are working from home to escape cubicle hell, we will show you! What can we do next to insult you and convince you to move on?
Here is how you know it is not quite time: HP does still provide coffee if you will go to office. When that goes out, you know the bell has rung.
Darn right we will take it. I have been hounding verizon for years and have even twice entered ISDN orders only to have them cancelled. No way they will bring DSL in my lifetime. We have some Wifi offerings not too many miles away but the wiMax ought to doit.
If Osama can have it why can't I? It is not just a little embarrasing to have nothing but POTS just a few miles away from a big metro area.
Exactly. Not only do I live in such an area but my local telco is Verizon.
I have been after Verizon since about 1998 to sell me some DSL. They won't. No ISDN even, though they have taken ISDN orders twice over the years and never come thru. It is not like I am a hundred miles out. I am one exchange outside metro Austin.
There is no way they will shoot themselves in the foot by adding a tax on the dialup minutes. If they do, they will promptly lose that extra line just as fast as I can get a dish installed.
Smoke. Lots of it. Reducing the cost of installing FIOS. Whoopie.
Don't hold your breath. I have sought something better than POTS from verizon since about 1998. Twice they agreed to sell me ISDN (but they didn't). They are not bringing ISDN or DSL or FIOS or anything else anytime soon. Rural America will get its broadband from wireless or BPL before Verizon will bring us anything better than POTS.
Yes indeed. In reality it took M$ 10 years to get close to being on par with WordPerfect for DOS -- WP 5.1, 6.0, and 6.1 products (1991-1994) are awesome and still to this day see some usage on my desk (in DOSemu) because M$word is such a pile. Do they even to this day have the ability to reveal codes?
M$ does not have much to say about being behind. Most of what they are ahead in is bloat. The unused-feature-set just keeps growing. Even with those DOS WordPerfect products, 90% of users only used perhaps 10% of the features. Some people just never discovered WP's style sheet stuff.
Wild Bill's/http://wildbill.purezc.com/scripts/imgrammarbot/> IM Grammarbot makes corrections in chat rooms where some of the worst usage of grammar abounds.
Just read what that bot does and you will be amazed at how only nine types of errors can be found and corrected.
Maybe BB heard the ruckus I caused several years ago getting the promised $40 rebate on my Acer USB CD burner. Only took 18 months and many calls to get it. To this day I rarely set foot in BB and I always remember this when looking at Acer/BENQ merchandise.
My policy is as follows: Once your rebate is delinquent, I terminate shopping in your store until I get it. Several times I have gone without shopping in Frys for weeks because of this. I go in and explain and seek help. Usually after a month or two of delinquency the check shows up.
Wild Bill's http://wildbill.purezc.com/scripts/imgrammarbot/ IMGrammarbot, YeOldeGrammarbot, and enchick4x are very useful and entertaining chat room bots. Educational too and very much needed considering how illiterate the AOL chat room lusers seem to be.
Cingular has a lot more than the two forms of Go Phone, those being PAYG and pick your plan. Both of those are GSM plans and neither is affected.
What is affected it TDMA to wit, AT&T Free2Go prepaid service. It is pretty much a don't care to Cingular because they have been out to get TDMA for quite some time now. Free2Go is virtually invisible if you are looking for it, yet it is a fine service.
This ruling helps Cingular in their quest to bury TDMA. Oddly, my phone with the very best coverage is that Free2Go.
Another reason they will not care is they do not make many dollars per month on prepaid customers like me. My $10 Free2go cards refresh it for 3 months and you can bet Cingular hates that!
Some time ago micro$oft sent me a copy of SFU. Install this! Right. Expires in 60 days. Hung it on the wall and invited anyone to take it.
Some time later they sent another "does not expire!" Sorry no time. Hung that on the wall too. No takers.
What do I want with this when I can have stuff like putty, UWIN, and Reflections? Better yet, I just formatted my NTFS partition and use it today for/home/

No time for this. Only have 96 mB of memory in this old P233 stinkpad. Product almost instantly takes over all the cpu cycles it can find.
Firefox 1.5 is outta here. Opera is fine and it looks like FF 1.07 will be OK. If I wanted windoze-product-behaviour I would used windoze.
