At this point the choices are RedHat Enterprise (RHEL) and SuSE (SLES). Both products are from fine companies, come with infrequent releases, semi-regular updates, and support just like the main line UNIX operating systems.

Customers tend toward the bright side, many with UNIX experience and some with Linux too. Expectation can be that we would see something that is supported as "enterprise" yet patched with lightning speed as many products you find in Open Source. Expectation that any and all hardware in the "enterprise" realm is well supported, tested, and works just as it expected be in (for example) a Sparc archictecture system.

Who knows what happy medium is? It is not reasonable for a vendor to provide enterprise class support for something that gets patched overnight on a regular basis. Yet some customers expect both.

The "OS/2 way togo" was long before WordPerfect sold out to Novell. In that time frame, m$ was busy stringing IBM along and they had WPCorp believing that OS/2 was the way.

By the time that deception became clear, WPCorp rushed to put out 5.1 for windoze. I saw beta and some later versions and they stank.

DOS versions 5.1, 6, and 6.1 were and still are fantastic products and of course they are fine in DOSemu.

This thing is a gross waste. What silliness we go thru just to use windoze! The dumb terminal example is certainly viable. I learned on such a beast. It was a 386 and it was running (gag) SCO Unix and had 6 or 8 terminals with an appropriate number of students all compiling and using emacs.

For a modern equivalent we just use a cheap system with linux of *BSD and use it as an Xserver thereby letting more than one user use one Linux system with no extra cost or licensing or anything but a network.

Seriously, all the managers sit around making PP presentations and they have Clippy to help them get it done. They have all the spiffy canned art to make it look slick. They even can make it talk with Agent characters so the bored victims will have something to laugh at.

Where is creativity in word processing? Certainly not in m$word because it is still a pile and has always been inferior to WordPerfect. But these days most communication is done via e-mail.

That means that talented communicators will express themselves with only text. Un-talented people will resort to HTML or RTF to try to get their point across. Comes across usually to /dev/null if it reaches me!

Nostalgia my foot. Late (circa 1992) 5.1 or 6.0 or 6.1 for DOS are all fine products. Run in graphics mode if you like, but I use them in text mode as always. All of that in DOSemu on my current linux system. Graphics preview works like it always did (except faster and in a window). When they say I "must" use powerpoint, I use WordPerfect for DOS instead. Use TEK ps driver then ps2pdf and everybody can read.

Corel took my money for the "Full" distro but I think I will not be wasting more.

Yes it once was a fine product. About 6 patches into 5.1 version (1992) it got to be really mellow. Then they put out 6.0 and Novell came forth with 6.1 which does just fine in DOSemu. I still use it just that way. Print postscript to a file and use ps2pdf on it.

Now any current versions are another story. I never could stand any gui version of WordPerfect. That DOS version will stick with you though, and beats M$ product.
