You're right, and as a matter of fact, these studies often involve an intervention to educate the subjects in risk avoidance, &c. That is to say, they intentionally seek to modify the behavior of the group (which is, of course, done "blind": without regard to case/control status).

There are two reasons for this: first, it provides a moral figleaf; since everyone nominally benefits at least slightly from participating, the sense of dooming the placebo group is mitigated since, strictly speaking, they are still on average better off than if they had not participated. It defends against the criticism that someone in the placebo group may tell themselves that they MIGHT have the active drug, and thus be more promiscuous.

Second, for technical reasons, a lower overall rate is more efficient for hypothesis testing, though I doubt that this is very significant.

Cooks Illustrated (a very good magazine) taste-tested several real vanilla extracts vs. synthetics (vanillin). Although the natural ones performed much better in lightly-flavored custards and ice creams, synthetic vanillin came out slightly ahead in baked goods.

Also, "florist paste" is a weird and misleading term (florists sell flowers; if anything, it should be "baker paste"). It's more commonly called "gum paste," for obvious reasons.

Here in the US, fondant is more common and also more pleasant to eat. Unless you need very precise or free-standing decorations, fondant's probably a better choice. Either one is easy to buy in bulk and much cheaper than marzipan, in addition to not triggering nut allergies.

if you want to compensate for having performed two tests, just double the p-value (bonferroni correction), which is conservative. you're still <5%.

the real criticism here would be that the six tests are not actually independent of each other, which throws any simple p-value straight out the window, but what did anyone really expect from southern illinois university?

  25. thinkpad on Ask Slashdot: GNU/Linux Laptops? · · Score: 1

If you want solid service and don't want a Macbook, then Lenovo Thinkpad is it. The support is domestic/insourced (my service center was in Georgia). As long as you're under warranty (comparable or cheaper in price to Applecare, but a larger number of somewhat confusing choices), they'll overnight you a mailer which gets overnighted back. After the service (which in my experience was very fast), they overnight the laptop to you. It can't get better than that without local repair centers (=apple stores).

This was with an X61s, but I think it would hold for all real Thinkpads (business-class), i.e. not Ideapads which are junk anyway.

Caveats: touchpad/nipple not as nice as macbook unless you really like the nipple; the AC adapter will probably fail within 2 years (although they'll replace this for you); mine died 2 months after the end of the 3-year warranty.

System76 is the only other option I'd consider, but I have no experience with them. I wanted an ultraportable, which they didn't have.
