I've been taking college courses for the majority of 15 years now. Roughly speaking by the end of the first third of the semester the workload is such that the assigned reading is not the most valuable use of my time. Often the workload is so heavy that even if I want to continue with the reading I can't perform on my assignments at an acceptable level if I do so. That isn't necessarily bad because working with the material is often as valuable or more than the exposure through reading. The professor heavily influences the likelyhood of a student to read the text with his or her selected course design.
If you are really lucky and enjoy science or engineering, you may end up with a career where you make money and you are happy and fulfilled. Even further, you might end up with an employeer who will let you chase these silly graduate degrees on their dime and even pay you more after you achieve them.
I've got engineer friends who have to do much of their administrative work themselves. They submit their own proposals, have to make sure they have enough project to pay their salary, etc. While those tasks are not technically challenging to complete, I'm very glad I work with full time people who do that so I can concentrate on engineering both from a knowledge perspective and from a time perspective.

Lenovo Could Take Over RIM

I had a discussion at work with a mapping vendor. They were involved with discussions on mobile device support. From what he had seen, the survival of RIM to this point and beyond was related to the way they play ball with the government in regards to encryption compared to other companies. Apparently, Apple flat out said no.
It needs new policies to protect the "school property." I'm the year of the class of Columbine. Everybody freaked out. The local districts couldn't afford to buy metal detectors, so someone had the bright idea that they should be able to see into student's backpacks. Clear vinyl or mesh backpacks for everyone. That policy lasted until they had to replace all the rain damaged textbooks from everyone using mesh. If laptops are the new textbooks, then there will be some learning experiences in making sure they are properly protected from damage.
I'd point at vaccine alarmists, PETA, and other left leaning extremists too. Extremist views thrive on empathetic arguments not analytic ones. *Correlation/Causation warning*
Nor should it. If your code needs explaination of that detail (read your organization is willing to fund your documentation to that level) then it is likely that plain text is a poor method of communicating your design.
So health insurance is one of the most important services I choose as a consumer; quite literally a life and death decision. I can choose to go to the free market where I individually have full choice (so to speak). Or my employeer will pay a good chunk of the costs and benefit from economy of scales in purchasing plans at the cost of severely limiting my choices. Technically there is a free market choice there. Practically, probably not for most.
Interestingly enough, the study separates Catholic schools from other private schools. I didn't see a reference to grade 12, but at grades 4 and 8 Catholic schooled children outperform publicly schooled children and are on par with privately schooled children. I don't know the statistics about how many Catholic schooled children grow up to be active Catholics; it seems like you have a better shot of being good at reason if you are trained by them.
A considerable number of people are concerned that hollywood is investing in marginal tech improvements rather than good storytelling. Since this is slashdot, it would be like every car company decided to forget MPG for a while and just offer everyone the nicest driver's seat possible for a sizable increase in cost over the previous year models.
"Notice how those degree programs are rarely advertised anymore." I wonder if that has more to do with the legal trouble Le Cordon Blue Schools got into last year. Essentially some for-profit cooking schools were sued for overstating the employability of their graduates.
It would be far more interesting to know of those who were interested in tech fields, how much these activities influenced them. Of course, that difficulty of the difference in experiments is probably on par with the difference in how interesting the results are.
Really Comcast? I think my head just exploded. There must have been something really expensive going on corporately to supply the data. I can't believe that they would ever do anything for a customer.
Clearly my post didn't go through in time, but it is attached to the parent. Those aren't discounts. The company charges the insurance company more than a procedure costs to get a price increase for the next fiscal year. They never expect the insurance company to pay $350. However, they might go out of business if they charged the insurance company the $75 the procedure costs this year and the insurance company only pays them $75 for the $100 the procedure costs by the end of the next fiscal year.
My wife worked for a medical supply company. The process goes like this. A company offers a product this year. The price is set at fiscal year for Medical payment org(Medicare/Insurance). The service provider charges more than the price set at fiscal year. Then the payment org pays the set amount. The provider writes off the difference in most cases and you don't see any of the process. The real key to this system is the next fiscal year, the price is set by the payment org based on the average charged price for a good or service. First off don't think that a bill paid by insurance really pays all you got billed. Second, they aren't trying to charge you next year's price for the root canal to try and get you to pay more next year.
To answer your title, the researcher used the anonymony of the internet to draw out results that are not drawn out by regular survey questions. More specifically, we got taught racism was bad, so we don't talk about it even on surveys. When election time rolls around then a black candidate actually does significantly worse than his polling numbers.

He is hiding any details. So, for what it is worth, he is on even grounds with the other two.

How long till they have a network fast enough to pass a voice call to my cell at my house in one of their "excellent" reception areas?

The study appears to have been done by the US Dept of Education on US students. I'm not surprised that the article doesn't mention a comparison.
Can I not pay the air conditioning fee so that they don't run my share?

I see a recognizable vegatable on the plate. Given that, it is more healthy than anything I ever saw in my cafeteria in the good ole US...
