I do know that IMAX uses digital sound, but it still uses film. The theaters I've been in, last I checked, definitely still use analog and it shows. Is it a matter of spreading the word?

No, it's a matter of size actually. IMAX is a ridiculously large format (70+ mm) and finding a media to hold that much information is as far as I know not a viable option as technology stands today.

That was an interesting read, but I know for a fact that the junior high (it wasn't a high-school, I was tired and said the wrong thing, sorry!) does not have enough money in the budget to buy new computers.

They barely have enough money to buy new text-books, much less invest in a completely new set of computers.

It's not a lack of choice to invest in new stuff, it's a lack of funding.

My old high-school still runs most of it's student-oriented desktops on either Win 3.11 or Win95. The "newer" Pentium 90's run '95, the old 486's run 3.11 on top of Dos 6.22.

This equipment does the job, but it ain't exactly Hot Shit anymore. Personally I think it says alot about how schools here in Sweden are low priority. Much more important to let the politicians buy luxury apartments.

(alas, they do have two high-powered Pentium2-400's with a whopping 128 meg RAM that they use for the kids who want to do video-editing. Also some Pentium-133 class machines in the teachers lounge. These run 98 First Edition.)

If I spend more than twenty seconds on a site without finding what I'm looking for - I leave the site. My time is worth more than navigating some stupid portal.

I actually met Adam while he was in high-school. One of my childhood friends was in the same high-school class as he was.

We arranged what we called a "hack" (essentially a more fun LAN, long before the LAN-scene came to be) where we assembled a shitload of computers at someones house and did all kinds of goofy stuff (programming, graphics, music, pranks, etc) and had a blast for 2-3 days at a time.

This guy is probably a bona-fide genius. I remember him lugging his C64 there, and he decided to show us one of the cool demos that he had coded. Unfortunately he couldn't find the disk containing the demo, so he sat down and started writing the demo-code in hex from what he remembered of it! After about 20 minutes of typing he had finieshed it, and showed us a working demo-effect of a cube on fire. Really cool!

This was probably back in early '96 or so.

The TV-license is going to transform into a "media license" and everyone with access to a computer, TV or other "media"-item is going to have to pay for the use of it.

Personally I'm not a fan of TV-licensing, and this is even less titillating to me.

Unfortunately that's not the reality. I live in Sweden and I pay HUMONGOUS taxes, yet every time I visit the doctor I have to pay a fee to visit him.

In fact, ALL the things that are supposedly free (following the socialistic-system that you describe) still come with very vagely described fees that I have no choice but to pay.

    To summarize: This sucks.

As far as the crimerate goes - I felt safer when I was in Los Angeles than when I was in Stockholm. Swedish police is insanely underfunded and overworked. For example, in my home-municipality there's only 5 (five) police-officers covering the second largest (area) county in entire Sweden. They have a hard time keeping up with all the drunkdrivers and domestic violence.
