"Windows is expensive, Linux is free" This has been this way forever and windows still has 90% of the marketshare. People are willing to pay for windows.
"Distros like Xandros "just work""
Windows just works, and works with more hardware without extraconfiguration.
" Linux is secure from worms, trojans, viruses"
Ummm rootkits? When more people switch over to linux you will see moreviruses out there for linux because right now windows is an easy targetwith a ton of machines out there. People much rather write a virus thatwill effect a much larger population. If linux was secure from viruss, why are there linux virus scanners?
"Linux runs on modest hardware"
So does windows
"Linux is less complex and thus more stable"
By far the worst reason I have ever read in my life for having linuxovertake Windows. Linux is about 100x more complex then windows, andsince when did complexity have to do with stability. In order to get Xhardware to work you have to download, configure, find missingdependicies, configure those, compile them install those, then go backto what you were originally doing and finish compiling and do aninstall. Of course there are package management solutions that solvealot of this but if the package aint available in it you are left tocompile. When I take a fresh machine an install windows on it,everything just works, with linux you need to figure out why your soundisnt working and then configure the driver and what not and edit configfiles.
"Linux has a "cool" factor missing from windows"
Yea I am sure millions of users will switch to linux cause its the coolthing to do, there are plenty of "cool" applications out there forwindows.
" The IT world's view of Microsoft as "evil" is percolating down to thegeneral public"
But they still are using it and despite the security flaws the general public is perfecty comfortable using windows.
"Linux applications are more stable and simpler than Windows' ones"
DUMB DUMB DUMB
Simpler as in UNUSABLE. XMMS vs Winamp, yea XMMS is alot simpler but it sucks in comparison. Gimp vs Photoshop. If you want simple go use a Mac, i want to be able to do advanced things and a simple program wont cut it. Up until recently Gnome finally got an open dialog that looked like it wasnt from 1980. Setting up half the applications for linux requires some sort of advanced knowledge, half the programs dont have a gui installation which drives everyone who is comfortable with a gui away from linux. No one wants to be editing config files to get an application to work.
It has been done and it was done so poorly that it caused a bigger problem because the damn thing was spreading so quickly that it was taking up all the bandwidth and causing the machines it patched to essentially not be able to get online because of all the damn packets it was sending out.
At my university we require students to run an antivirus software (we provide if they dont have) and to keep their machine patched and secured and if they dont well they will quickly be taken off the network once their machine gets infected with a worm or is hacked and we recieve an outside complaint. They then get all mad that we took them offline and we have to go through expplaining to them that they agreed when signing up for our resnet service they would do the following and they violated the agreement. We charge them a 25 dollar reconnect fee which includes us taking their machine in, or going out there, and cleaning it up and securing it , as well as educating them on how to keep their machine secure.
The other day at work I had a kid yelling at me that we cant just take him off the network without warning. The reason we had taken him off was because his machine was sending spam to aol address and recently aol has been blocking all email from our domain because of it. I said to him because of you everyone on this campus can now no longer send emails to their friends at aol and we have to contact aol once we are done with your machine and get off their blacklist. That shut him up.
I had alot of problems, the graphic installer would not work for me, it would just lock my mouse up out of no where and I had to reboot. Once I got it installed I could not change my clock out of 24 hour format , the clock applet kept crashing. I tried to open hwbrowser to take a look into setting up my printer, that never loaded. The new nautilus is just garbage imho. I then tried to run yum but that failed as it couldnt reach any servers so I installed apt-get but I could not install any packages due to gpg issues. Sigh... core 1 runs fine on my laptop though.
We actually shape the traffic and give it maybe 5 mbps which pretty much blocks it as you can't upload at all really so you cant download the file you want. When we werent shaping it people were able to download blazingly fast off bittorrent files but this also took up an immense amount of bandwidth.
I am a student working at a helpdesk at a university, one day we came in to a voicemail from a user where they apparently thought they hung up the phone but they hit the 3 way button and well ill let you guys listen for yourselves.
Goto the folder you want and click on the nice big FIND button on the toolbar. There is even an advanced find feature. Any idea why he would say you cant search folders?
You didnt even bother to read the page you linked to did you? It CLEARLY states in the page you linked
"Average Dimensions and Weights 14.9" (378.0mm) W x 12.6" (320.0mm) D x 1.9" front - 2.2" rear (47.0mm - 55.0mm) H / 14.1 lb. (6.4kg) with combo drive, 15.7 lb. (7.1kg) with combo drive and battery"
It took two seconds for me to find that, apparently when you look at something for two seconds you dont actually process any of the information.
Anyone know of a semi-cheap GPS tracker type solution I could use for my laptop? I feel like this is the only way I could not be paranoid about my laptop being stolen. Of course someone could find the transmitter and remove it but how likely is it that they would even think the laptop would be equipped with one.
Its not the point of what he was using. Either way what he was using was not user friendly at all for the average joe and even for those who are technical (not elite linux users).
Everytime I try to convince myself to switch I run into a situation similar to what Mr. Raymond ran into. I find myself doing to much work to do simple things and I simply dont have the time to research into it.
Hardly.... They sponsored this guy and I think it's great that they are doing so. This is a wonderful project but since it's sponsored by Microsoft it's automatically evil?
No one building the twin towers said "What if a plane crashed into the building?" when they were building the WTC. I don't see the harm in ensuring safety by asking questions about the technology and making sure it can handle "every" possible situation.
"He calls the law unfair, but adds, "You would have to be stupid" to try to violate it."
You would have to be stupid to call the law unfair. What you are doing is unfair to the millions of people you send SPAM to.
Say I want to look for some weird industrial part. I open up google and type "long hard metal round"
And I come up with plenty of usefu... oh nm
The lesson is clear: stay out of movie theaters^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H.. cars and you won't get arrested.
It seems they forgot to take the card out of its case. Wait no thats just the huge fan/heatsink combo

The emails claiming to add 3 inches to my wang are more believable then /.'s april fools jokes.

It's also powered by it's own sun in a jar!

"Bad Andy! Good Pizza!"
So thats what that ad campaign meant!
Do they run windows? Oh wait...
the words "here are the pictures" and slashdot should never go together. We all know it never works out in the end.

77 Create an email address directory
Yea I am sure google will do that. The spammers would be happy with all this easy access to email address'.
"Ralsky is a pammer"
does this mean Ralsky uses Pam on his pans to prevent sticking?
